NGT: Charges and Joey Bosa are "nowhere"

Ben in Tampa : 8/24/2016 2:10 pm

The #Chargers put out their best offer, feeling any more missed time would mean Joey Bosa doesn’t play the full 16 games. It was rejected.

@RapSheet
#Chargers offer to Joey Bosa included the 2nd most Year 1 cash behind only Carson Wentz. Now, if he doesn’t play 16 games, it all changes

@sdutGehlken
Chargers proposed to Joey Bosa what they made clear is their best offer, source says. It was declined. Offer pulled. Two sides are nowhere.

Yikes, not a good look for the 2016 third overall draft pick or the Chargers. How can this be happening with a rookie wage scale in place?

Or does Bosa just flat out not want to play in San Diego?

I believe it has to do

with how they are paying him, not how much they are paying him. I believe the Chargers want to pay it in installments whereas Bosa's camp wants a true up front bonus.
Actually, the Chargers just released a statement

Missing game checks
timintey : 8/24/2016 2:15 pm : link
will be the wrong move on his part, imo
Let's go ahead and plan on him
Randy in CT : 8/24/2016 2:16 pm : link
getting hurt this season by missing training camp. I'll go with pulled hammy.
I don't trust SD one bit
robbieballs2003 : 8/24/2016 2:17 pm : link
The team is putting this out there to make Bosa look bad. That is not a good way of doing business. I am not sticking up for Bosa but if the original reports were true that he either wants his bonus money up front or does not want offset language in the contract then this should have been done by now.
What happens if he sits the entire season
pjcas18 : 8/24/2016 2:18 pm : link
out, does SD still own his rights or does he reenter the draft?
And Eli

Was villainized by the NFL for not going there. That franchise is a fucking joke.
I think he

re-enters the draft but am not sure. Would SD get a comp pick?

This. No matter what happens, I hope the Chargers take it hard in the brown eye.

Questions on SD's Rights to Bosa -
Diver_Down : 8/24/2016 2:28 pm : link
SD owns his rights right up to the moment the 1st pick is called. At which point, he is draft eligible with no compensation for SD.

Another key milestone is Week 10. If Bosa does not sign before Week 10, he does not accrue a year of service.

I realize its hard to turn down the money these QB's do
UConn4523 : 8/24/2016 2:29 pm : link
but Rivers staying there has always been puzzling. I guess he loves the weather because there's no other reason to stay there, what a miserable franchise.
I wonder if SD
pjcas18 : 8/24/2016 2:31 pm : link
would trade him at this point and what value he has.

Not suggesting to the Giants per se, but whoever.

Hard to lose the #3 overall pick, but they could conceivably lose him for nothing.

It's already a bad situation, that would be a disaster.

Is there any precedent for a player sitting out the season in the NFL?
There Are 2 Issues In Dispute
Bernie : 8/24/2016 2:34 pm : link
-How the signing bonus is paid
-offset language on the guaranteed money if he is cut (meaning if he signs with another team, anything that team pays him reduces the guaranteed money SD would owe him)

It is common for signing bonuses to be paid over 2 or 3 years to assist teams with cash flow issues and it is common for contracts to have the offset language. Bosa's camp will not agree to both, even though it has been reported that the picks on either side of him have agreed to both.

In my opinion Bosa is only hurting himself. As Randy said, he is an injury waiting to happen once he steps on the field and he basically has wasted his entire rookie season. With the lack of practice time allowed by the CBA, there is little chance he catches up this year.

Notice the wording of the Chargers statement..
LakeGeorgeGiant : 8/24/2016 2:36 pm : link
The offer was "consistent" with "Chargers players. That is the key here, it wasn't consistent with other NFL top 5 selections.

I know many like to immediately blame the player, but the Chargers are a shit organization.
The Chargers have done this time after time
jeff57 : 8/24/2016 2:36 pm : link
Played hardball with their pick, resulting in holdouts. No wonder Manning didn't want to go there.
If the offset language..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/24/2016 2:40 pm : link
wan't changed, then Bosa has a legitimate gripe.

That's it. The only thing consistent is the garbage reputation of SD management and front office, year in, year out. It's not a secret that they openly hate their fans (try and fail to extort the city, then fail at leaving) and they hate their players (Weddell-gate).

I noticed that too. There's a reason why they don't compare to other NFL contracts

I do not believe this is true. A player is only eligible for the draft in the year after his college eligibility ends. Bosa's only "recourse" is to try and force a trade by refusing to sign. This was the same issue La'el Collins faced last year and is why the agents made all sorts of threats to discouraged teams from drafting him late. They desperately wanted him to make it to free agency so they could control where he signed and would sign for a shorter contract. If he were drafted, that team would control his rights.

I agree with you but sitting out the season is idiotic if you are Bosa. He will lose an entire year of pay, be drafted lower next year, and will become a free agent a year later.
We will see how Bosa feels when he misses a game check.
Giant John : 8/24/2016 2:45 pm : link
I think SD has the leverage.
Collins agent..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/24/2016 2:47 pm : link
pressured teams because they did not want him to lose a year.

Once the draft starts, if Bosa hasn't signed, he is eligible to be selected again - SD's rights to him expire then.
Any word if the Chargers are willing to trade Bosa?
idinkido : 8/24/2016 2:50 pm : link
I think a team like Dallas would be desperate to get a DE like Bosa.
What's awesome with SD's statement is
Diver_Down : 8/24/2016 2:50 pm : link
that this is there best offer and will now pro-rate the offer for each week he misses. With Bosa turning down the current offer, he won't be eager to accept a lower offer each week that passes. At this point, SD should be calling around to see who will take Bosa off their hands.
I don't think
ryanmkeane : 8/24/2016 2:50 pm : link
SD has any leverage whatsoever. He can easily sit out, be a top 5 pick again and get even more money than he would have in SD.

Can't say I'm surprised that the Chargers released a public statement essentially made to embarrass Bosa. Classless.

SD can trade his rights up to the Draft. If he is signed, he can be traded up to the trade deadline.

Maybe so, but San Diego is earning a reputation for being a place players don't want to play. This can only hurt the Chargers in the long run.

They should just pay the man the same fucking upfront bonus money that any other team would pay to a top five pick.

Cannot see him as a top 5 pick next year at all. A year off, and a track record of being difficult (even though he's probably right in this scenario). He was barely a top 5 pick this year as Dallas was taking Elliot regardless, apparently.

Bosa will not be a top 5 pick next year. He'll be one year removed from playing any meaningful football, and there will be more talented DE's entering the draft next year. Bosa won't sniff anything near top 10, let alone top 5 next draft if he does sit out this year.
FYI
T in NJ : 8/24/2016 3:24 pm : link
From MMQB:
Quote:

First overall pick Jared Goff does have deferrals but no offset language.

Second overall pick Carson Wentz does have offset language but only $1 million of deferral that is paid in January.

And since 2012, the third overall pick has either had: 1. No offset language with deferral; or 2. Offset language with bonus paid before January.

This year, 19 of the first 24 picks have had their signing bonus paid in full by the end of 2016.

For what it’s worth, last year’s top overall pick, Jameis Winston, had offset language and $6 million of his signing bonus deferred into the subsequent March.

The Chargers are offering something akin to the contract Jameis Winston signed.

the fact that the Chargers just issued that statement
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 8/24/2016 3:30 pm : link
is a joke. Negotiate through the press? That just means more bad blood and an unhappy result.

the deferral bothers Bosa why exactly?
Csonka : 8/24/2016 3:35 pm : link
Is he planning on spending all his bonus in October or something? Can't wait for a few million guaranteed until next year? Pretty ridiculous.

Sorry ... I don't get why he's risking losing money and hurting his team over the date that he gets his guaranteed money. Seems more likely his agent needs the money upfront than the player.
It's a big gamble.
K-Gun? Pop-Gun : 8/24/2016 3:37 pm : link
Bosa is unlikely to increase his total career earnings by sitting out this year.
And to release that statement
Kyle in NY : 8/24/2016 3:38 pm : link
and try to negotiate through the media is even more of a joke. Good luck getting players to negotiate with you in the future.

It's amazing how they treat this guy. They had him as the #1 player in the draft. They loved him and we're thrilled with the trades at top of draft allowed him to be there. And they fuck it up. What a mess they created.
