College Football starts tonight!

B in ALB : 8/26/2016 11:39 am
Hawaii and Cal are playing a week early in Sydney, Australia - game is on at 10p - ESPN. Hawaii's always pretty entertaining and it'll be interesting to see the crowd down under.
Who wants to hear which players I'll be watching closely?
Anakim : 8/26/2016 11:52 am : link
I'll give you a hint: they're OTs, LBs and WRs (which I think will be our biggest needs for next year)
can't wait
MookGiants : 8/26/2016 11:58 am : link
I have become a much bigger college fan than pro.

Going to some awesome games this year.

ND-Texas next weekend
MSU-ND 9/17
Florida-Tennessee 9/24
Alabama-LSU 11/5

Haven't been to Texas, LSU, or Tennessee before so I'm really looking forward to them.

How do you think McGlinchey will translate to the left side?

lucky bastard. i had big intentions of heading down to austin next weekend but cousin decided to schedule the wedding same day. ugh.

DKR is a blast though i haven't been to a game there since 2013 so no idea if things have changed. the tailgating scene is a bit odd in that it's so spread out, but the atmosphere will be electric. i still remember the '06 opener (real opener not counting the week 1 cupcake) when it was 1 v. 2 with ohio state, even though we lost

and of course austin will treat you right, ha.

I think i heard the other day that UVA holds the record for consecutive games with an Interception - 39 games. That's fuckin crazy.
One good thing about getting older

the football offseason feels much shorter!
The U will rise again!

Only way WR is a big need is if Shepard busts or Beckham gets injured. Can't see using a top 100 pick (1st 3 rounds) on a WR if Shepard looks legit.

I think DL will be a far bigger need since I don't think they'll re-sign both JPP and Hankins. And even if they do, if Owa or Bromley struggle to take that next step and prove capable of playing significant snaps, then they'll need to add a premium player there.
Yep, that was in the mid '90s
Greg from LI : 8/26/2016 12:42 pm : link
We had some great defenses back then with some real ball hawks in the secondary - Keith Lyle, Percy Ellsworth, Ronde Barber, Anthony Poindexter, Paul London (the younger brother of He Who Shall Not Be Named). George Welsh knew how to build defense.

We need a flanker. I think Shep. might be better suited to the slot

I think Owa breaks out this season and replaces JPP. I also think we re-sign Hankins.
even if Owa breaks out

If JPP leaves, DE jumps to the top of the priority list. When was the last time this front office didn't plan for 3 solid DEs?

The Battle of Bristol
BigBlueDownTheShore : 8/26/2016 1:54 pm : link
Is going to be fun week 2. Not sure if any of you have been watching the transformation of the Bristol racetrack into a football field, but it's really cool. Also, it is possibly going to be the largest attended College game ever with both teams about 200 miles away from the location of the track.

True.

I would rank it:

LT
Flanker WR
WLB
RG
DE
Geez look at Hawaii's opening schedule
mgreenie03 : 8/26/2016 2:08 pm : link
Open in Australia and then at Michigan in 8 days!! Ooof. Talk about frequent flier miles.
Cal is supposed to have a couple of
barens : 8/26/2016 4:30 pm : link
phenomenal freshman wide receivers.
Pretty good crowd for the kids
B in ALB : 8/26/2016 10:26 pm : link
Nice 63 degrees, sunny Saturday.

Cal with a short field scores on a 34 yard run.

Awesome that college ball is finally here!
This Hawaii QB
pganut : 8/26/2016 10:26 pm : link
Young man looks in over his head. Early, but not an auspicious start. The PF was the only thing that happened positively for them.
Kid was the starter last year too
B in ALB : 8/26/2016 10:34 pm : link
He throws an ugly ball.

I like this 31 from Hawaii.
Welll, he just shut my mouth
pganut : 8/26/2016 10:36 pm : link
Although it was really YAC that's made him look good.
Nice rugby touch for the TD
B in ALB : 8/26/2016 10:39 pm : link
Aussies have to love that.
Nice
pganut : 8/26/2016 10:46 pm : link
And now the Aussie Rules Football successful kick gesture. Could be a fun game here.

depends what you're looking for...food wise...

1. rudy's bbq is a really good "fast" option, lambert's is a bit more sit down
2. torchy's tacos is life changing
3. you'll kick yourself if you don't have breakfast tacos at least once

i could go on...

from what i've been told Rainey st. remains the best spot to hang out and hit bars at night. i'd avoid "dirty 6th" which is east 6th street.

really depends what you're up for doing. there's a bunch of outdoors stuff (barton springs, zilker park), tourist-y stuff (the campus, downtown, s. congress)

i moved out in 2011 but have tried to get back at least 1x year since so my knowledge of the city isn't what it used to be haha. regardless, i think its one of those towns you legit have to try to have a bad time in

hahaha. ya i mean luckily i think there's no overlap between her crap and the game itself, but yes, not being at DKR will suck.
