BREAKING: Tony Romo has broken bone in his back

Rich in L.A. : 8/27/2016 2:44 pm
The Dak Prescott era begins.

A young promising QB...
Ryan : 8/27/2016 3:21 pm : link
...coming on unexpectedly can be a rallying cry for them just as Romo himself once was. With their OL they're built as well as anyone to play with training wheels if need be.

That being said if they can't engineer some pass rush Prescott will be under tremendous pressure to generate points.
Well said Ryan
DennyInDenville : 8/27/2016 3:23 pm : link
Need a nice early 14-0 lead and Dak will feel the heat, no training wheels with that score.

Time for Eli and Odell to do their thang.
Dak Prescott
Simms11 : 8/27/2016 3:25 pm : link
looks like the real deal. If he's as good as Winston was last year for Tampa they'll be fine with that Oline. I hate to say it, but he'll give is fits because of his athleticism. I don't feel bad for Dallas whatsoever.

It doesn't take much with a back as bad as his. Wish him the best, but he needs to retire. I agree that beating Prescott is a barometer for this team.
Guarantee this turns out to be

a fractured transverse process. Same injury Hostetter sustained against Tampa years ago.

Wow.

HUGE break-no pun intended-for us.

When it comes to:

a) playing the Cowboys on
b) opening day, against
c) a second-string quarterback

...I'm sure as shit not counting my chickens before they hatch.
It's a big loss
KWALL2 : 8/27/2016 3:31 pm : link
If Romo was healthy they had an experienced top 10 NFL QB who takes care of the ball. Now they have a mid round rookie. Kid looked good early in preseason but it all changes in week 1. It's a different game.

Almost every rookie struggles early. We get him early.

Sucks for Romo. Sucks for Dallas fans. Good news for Giants in 2016.
Some folks were saying that the play was nothing ...
short lease : 8/27/2016 3:34 pm : link
But, ... that he had to reach for his back (Big problem area in the past) at all - wasn't good.
I like Romo, and I shudder to think about
CT Charlie : 8/27/2016 3:35 pm : link
his ability to enjoy life when he's in his fifties and sixties. Joe Namath, another likable guy who took a beating, moved like an invalid.
I like Romo ...but he need's to think hard about playing ...
Bluesbreaker : 8/27/2016 3:36 pm : link
Zak Prescott has looked good and he is young athletic ..
Spags will need to throw him enough looks to create
some turnovers .
What I do like is that we have improved our Run Defense
to compete with the Dallas O-line .
Either way it's a Big Hit to Lose Romo you can't replace
his football savvy & smarts .
We need to put a W up opening day .
Really too bad.
Jerz44 : 8/27/2016 3:38 pm : link
Try though I might, I just can't hate him. He really comes across as a very genuine, good guy and I respect both his talent and his willingness to fight through injuries.

He's just unfortunate in that he keeps getting hurt.
Wouldn't under estimate Prescott, their OL, and of course Witten

I do to Bill. When he first came into the league ... I remember thinking

"This cocky little fuck ... I wish someone would slap that little smug grin off his face".

But, he has proven himself over the years. He is a good player. Dallas, at least - is a different team without him ... I don't give 2 shits about Dallas as an Organization but, I kind of feel sorry for Romo as a person/player.

I'd feel better right now if they had gotten Wentz or Goff. Prescott has really flashed in pre-season. Who knows about any of these guys but draft order means zero at this point.
I didn't see the Romo hit
VTDAD : 8/27/2016 3:53 pm : link
But if the Dallas OL is so invincible, how did he take a shot that caused this injury?

Against a supposedly vanilla defensive scheme?

The way he plays the position
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 8/27/2016 3:54 pm : link
by extending plays, he is going to get hit. His body is starting to betray him. Part of getting older. Frankly, it didn't look like that bad a hit watching on replay. Its time for him to hang it up before he is a walking cripple for the rest of his life.

Good player, as much as I hate him as the leader of the Cowboys.
What's really sad for Romo
ThatLimerickGuy : 8/27/2016 3:55 pm : link
Is that he didn't even take a shot to the back on the play.

He basically just was sliding and a guy jumped on his shoulders which bent him forward a little bit.

How does a conditioned athlete break a bone doing that when there was no impact? Soft Tissue or Herniated Disc I could see but that is bizarre. Can the bones of his back be so brittle that they break just by an awkward stretch of soft tissue?

Don't think any of the rookies this year are capable of playing competently week 1 of their first years. Goff, wentz and Prescott aren't exactly Winston, mariota or luck.
Im happy because

He had pressure coming from his right, he stepped up, tried to scramble, then tried to slide, and someone ran up behind him (Bruce Irvin?). It didn't look like a brutal hit either. I don't think that injury is a reflection of Dallas' OL. Romo should have thrown the ball away.
My concern
jpennyva : 8/27/2016 4:01 pm : link

and we have no tape on him.

This is the part I have concern with. Sure, he's a rookie and hopefully the Giants' new and improved defense can rattle him early but his lack of playing means he will be harder to game plan for.

Week one will be very interesting. I hope the Giants score early and often and put the weight of the world on the kid.
The problem with dismissing Prescott
BlackLight : 8/27/2016 4:01 pm : link
by way of comparing him to RG3 is that RG3 played pretty well in his rookie year.

I'm not especially concerned about the idea that Prescott could be playing in Dallas for the next 12 years. That's a concern for another day. I'm worried about getting a win in Week 1. And nothing about that is in the bag right now.

He rarely hit a receiver in stride downfield in college and he didn't do it this past week besides the short ball

Maybe, maybe not..Romo went undrafted..Brady 6th round..Prescott's performance to date means squat to me....as I said, if they have him manage the game along with the adrenalin that opening day and being at home produces, they can beat anyone..It's just one game..

On here? I'm betting the farm that a win against the 'Boys won't mean anything to a bunch on here because, "whoop de doo, we beat the Cowboys without Romo."

If we lose it will be, "we can't even beat them WITHOUT Romo..

LOL @ Cowpokes saying he was fine yesterday.

It was not a very vicious hit VIDAD ... If IIRC,e was kind of scrambling to get away from the pocket and kind of got brushed down from behind. But, he immediately reached for his back with a little bit of a grimace.
The defender
BlackLight : 8/27/2016 4:15 pm : link
basically dropped all his weight onto Romo from behind and bent his body forward in a really awkward way. My instinct watching it was that he probably was hurt badly, and I was surprised when the first reports were that he was fine.
Hang 'em up Tony
trueblueinpw : 8/27/2016 4:17 pm : link
Romo doesn't take every other day off because his clavicle has been broken three times. He gets so much time off because his back has been messed up for years. This guy won't be able get out of bed when he's 50. Now another broken back? Get well soon Tony. Then retire.

A rookie QB in his first career game. He can't read defenses & plays a lot different when he's getting hit. Giants need to disguise coverage/blitzes and absolutely tee off on him.

Romo takes a beating. You guys constant blowing the Cowboys o-line forget that they are not very good pass blockers.

I feel bad for him hate the Cowboys but Romo's a good guy. When it's done it's done. Two back injuries and two clavicle injuries. He needs to walk away now. The shot of his wife made me feel for their family. Football is not a sport for old men.
He really should hang them up, as others have said
mfsd : 8/27/2016 4:30 pm : link
He's really doing some damage to his back the last few years.

But as we all know, it's not up to him, Jerrah will decide when he's had enough
He's a rookie qb

Well what should be the reaction? Week 1 is a gimme. It's a game we should win even if romo played. I hate to put expectations like that on the team but it's been 5 years since making the playoffs and while the optimist in me thinks Eli can play a solid 4 more years, he could realistically fall off in any random season. The Giants stop shooting themselves in the foot in divisional games and they are a playoff team
Sucks for Romo and I think Jerry has had enough after this..
Shockwave : 8/27/2016 4:33 pm : link
You know he's steaming right now, how many seasons has romo gone down for considerable time in the last few years? Not sure exactly but it seems like 4/5 years he has missed a signicant chunk of the season.

He missed 2 games the 4 years prior to last season. But it does seem like this back thing is recurring now. He also didn't play particularly well last season, either.
Tony,

thanks for the memories. You had bad luck. Crazy misplays in the early going. Overthrew players in the clutch. At times showed devastating talent against the Giants. In mid career, began to show as fragile and injury prone. But you also have shown remarkable grit, even crazy courage at times. Just remember its only a game, and a very violent one at that. Forget 6-10 weeks, we will remember and admire you for your talent, grit and leadership. Real Cowboys know when to ride off into the sunset. Cows, you knew the risks and should have seen this coming. Don't expect, as many here on BBI do, that your deferred, later round, QB pick, will turn into the new Tom Brady.
Romo is a warrior. I always respected him and I think
Dry Lightning : 8/27/2016 4:44 pm : link
he showed respect to Eli and the Giants. This changes things only a little. If Romo had played, the game would have been close, he would have gotten hurt, and then Prescott would have come in and destroyed us. Now, Prescott will start the game, and we will be annihilated from the opening kickoff. Prescott will continue to torment us for years.........Sigh.
