Jerell Adams

If we're going to have a 'two way tight end' this season, it's probably going to be him. It won't happen early on - he's not ready yet, but as the season progresses, he may earn it. I'm not saying he will, but he seems to have the ability both to block and receive. Neither Tye nor Donnell have made noticeable improvement as blockers. Johnson can help there, but he's more of a fullback.
Incredible the way he ran the punt returner down

He's probably the TE of the future for this team
UberAlias : 8/28/2016 6:56 pm : link
But the future isn't yet. He's still very raw.
Question is...
RC02XX : 8/28/2016 7:03 pm : link
Will he be the JPP of TEs? I'm still waiting for that one to arrive.
he actually engages and blocks. ....
George from PA : 8/28/2016 7:16 pm : link
He might be the TE of now

I'm sure Reese learned his lesson there
He looks a lot more athletic than Robinson ever did.

Is Adams the first TE this preseason to successfully block
Mason : 8/28/2016 7:41 pm : link
and caught a pass in a game? I think so.

If that is the case he is the best you got right now.

Bonus: He was able to not only catch but run after he caught the football because he was able to stay on his feet. Best of all he actually maintained control of it.

I know shocking right? I almost forgot TEs were capable of doing these feats.

Stick him in there with the ones and don't take him out.

We're not exactly bursting at the seams with talented TEs. Let the kid play and roll with it.
he looked good from what I saw of him and
Del Shofner : 8/28/2016 8:45 pm : link
I think he's the biggest and fastest of the lot.
I think he makes the team and plays off the bench to begin the season.
Ira : 8/28/2016 9:25 pm : link
Depending if he works hard and makes progress, he could be starter at some point later in the season.
If he doesn't get playing time I'll be pissed
mattlawson : 8/28/2016 9:28 pm : link
Our TEs are shit blockers. This kid ran down a sure TD faster than the rest of our squad - he makes the team based on effort alone on that one play. Oh and yeah he caught a pass for a first down. Something hardly anyone else on the team has done this preseason.
Stop with the 'he's not ready yet'
wonderback : 8/28/2016 9:35 pm : link
Is anybody else ready? Not to my eyes. He couldn't do any worse, that's for sure. He blocks, catches and doesn't fall down when he starts to run. Pencil him in.

He hasn't tripped over a hash mark, either....
Adams looks and plays like a TE.
TC : 8/28/2016 11:15 pm : link
Which is not anything I feel entirely comfortable saying about any of the other TE's on the roster. He's got the tools.

I hope he grabs the opportunity he's got.
my Dad likes him
Paulie Walnuts : 8/29/2016 12:05 am : link
and he loves big Tight Ends...
What I would like to see McAdoo do
Bob in Newburgh : 8/29/2016 9:58 am : link
as a bold, confident move.

Sever ties with Donnell (yes try to trade him for anything first).

Not only have Adams make the roster, but actually be the base package starter. Sub him out on passing downs unless you are playing a team that absolutely cannot cover TEs no matter how simple and basic their routes.
I don't know about
lugnut : 8/29/2016 10:14 am : link
cutting Donnell, but yeah, I think I would actually start Adams. What's the step down from Donell/Tye if we start Adams? He might miss a blocking assignment? If he's the TE of the future, the future gets here quicker if he starts day one.
I would have cut Donnell after the Bills game.
Klaatu : 8/29/2016 10:19 am : link
And I'd start Adams in a heartbeat over Tye or any other TE on the roster.

Yes he could depending on how much of the playbook he actually knows. I agree he should get some time with the 1's if he is even close to understanding his routes and responsibilities though.
The knock on..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/29/2016 10:35 am : link
Adams hasn't been his ability - it has been between the ears. As Filthy points out, his ability to pick up the playbook is probably the biggest concern, along with his work ethic.

If he rectifies those two issues, he'll go a long way towards having a good, productive career here.

That may be the knock, but is it reality? I wonder.

I don't know if it is something he's worked on. He was constantly in the doghouse in college for issues picking up the playbook or for slacking off in practice. I never heard anything about lack of effort in games though.

Some guys understand that the transition to the NFL requires more dedication, and maybe he took getting picked so late as a snub. I really don't know - and I haven't heard anything reported down here that the rest of us haven't already seen or heard.

I'm bolstered by the fact that despite the turmoil with his coaching staff and his QBs, the kid showed improvement every year. Is he the sharpest tool in the shed? Probably not. His Wonderlic score was 15. Of course, Jeremy Shockey's was 12, and that didn't stop him from becoming a top-tier TE. All I know is that I'm pretty down on Donnell and I'm not that enamored with Tye, either. Maybe I'm grasping at straws with Adams (as I was, admittedly, with Matt LaCosse), maybe not. We'll see.
