has been very encouraging.

A poster mentioned it a few weeks and I'm pretty sure he was trolling but Mcadoo and his handling of the playcalling is kind of weird.

Does he actually think he's getting advantage by keeping it secret? It would be bizarre if he doesnt call the plays IMO.
We are..

relatively healthy.

And we seem to at least have upgraded the run defense. Tough to tell with it being preseason, but at least we don't look as bad on D as last year.
That people still take preseason way too seriously

Mine
Percy : 8/29/2016 9:41 am : link
No blocking TE, no worthwhile RB, no replacement for the injured FB, and weakest OL in the league. Truly improved, impressive D overall.
Absolutely, the defense
BillT : 8/29/2016 9:41 am : link
And the DL especially. This is a group where all 4 starters are excellent run defenders while being able to rush the passer as well. That makes the very average LBs a far better unit. On top of that they're loaded at CB and have enough talent at safety to complete a very good secondary. I also think they've developed enough WR talent to make teams pay for the double-teams OBJ will face on every snap.
League wide - Coaches are playing starters Less
ZogZerg : 8/29/2016 9:44 am : link
And, fewer "Stars" have been put on IR before the season begins.

So far
Giants : 8/29/2016 9:57 am : link
This defense is far better than the last few season. On offense the Giants do have weapons however it may not mean much. Without a OL to block for these RB there may once again not be much of a running game. Same could be said about the passing game. Without time the talented receivers / Eli may not be able to have a impact. Giants need to find away to improve the blocking
We have a crummy OL
lugnut : 8/29/2016 9:57 am : link
and no blocking TE, which JR deserves a lot of criticism for.

We have a much improved defense, which JR deserves a lot of credit for.

So he averages out to an average GM?

We simply must take an OT in the first round or two next year who can definitely play his position (i.e, left side / right side), barring some amazing FA acquisition. And probably an OG soon after.
Remembering It's Preseason ...
Trainmaster : 8/29/2016 9:59 am : link
... and to not get too enthused or too discouraged about anything.

Defense, particularly DL, seems much improved.
Early returns on top 2016 draft picks are encouraging.
Cruz will likely have a role in the offense.

The OL, especially the right side, is still a big concern.
The LBs are still most JAGs.
TEs are still JAGS.

Biggest takeaway?
The_Boss : 8/29/2016 10:06 am : link
Opportunity. The 2016 NYG have an incredible opportunity to seize control of this division. Dallas is without Romo until Halloween. Washington has a brutal first place schedule. The Eagles are an unknown but I believe for the fist time in many years, the talent differential has swung back in our favor. The performance of the OL and TE's, in particular, have me concerned but we still have 2 weeks. Figure it out and this can be an 11-5 season. Struggle all year and maybe we finish .500. The ball is in their court.
alive... Alive.... ALIVE....!!!
x meadowlander : 8/29/2016 10:13 am : link
That is - no major injuries, accidents, incidents aside from a cracked rib, a 1 game kicker suspension and a rotational TE loss.

For a Giant team to get through 3 weeks of preseason with that is REMARKABLE.
Number one - our defense is better, MUCH better
Johnny5 : 8/29/2016 10:18 am : link
Number two - Our offensive line and TE blocking still smells like number two. After a night of Mexican food and tequila.
That the defense is looking very improved, but that....
Crispino : 8/29/2016 10:19 am : link
the offense looks to have regressed more than the defense has improved.
Vernon looks worthy of that contract
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 8/29/2016 10:20 am : link

We have a solid defense from what it seems.
bigblue1124 : 8/29/2016 10:21 am : link

Unfortunately they will have to score 3 touchdowns per game for us to win. Kidding but our D is much improved and I have faith on the other side of the ball the light’s will come on.
nothing.
Les in TO : 8/29/2016 10:21 am : link

the giants have stayed relatively healthy (touch wood).

so my takeaway, is that it's been a success.

I jump on stupid posts, whether they are negative or positive.

Every year, we have some schmucks that will give ridiculous projections for Giants. Matt in Syracuse would get reamed for saying the D would have 70 sacks and Kerry Collins would have 6000 yards passing.

Who was that annoying fuck (EVERY4YEARS) who would create a post a day about how great everything is.

To think I'm only jumping on the negatives and not realizing that I just detest morons would be a really bad mischaracterization.

the only way I see us missing the postseason this year is the O-line/TE Blocking. I'm very encouraged by everything else. We know what we're getting from the starting O-lineman and there's alot to be desired but what really scares me is if anyone of them gets hurt. None of the other lineman currently on the roster would surprise me if they were cut, including Hart (although unlikely of course). It also wouldn't shock me if some of them have seen their last snaps in NFL uniforms. They're that bad. I'm hoping that majority of our backups are guys that currently are on other rosters. In this case I'm more interested in the devil I don't know.

As for TE I hope Jerrell Adams workload increases. He's our best blocker.
My take is
joeinpa : 8/29/2016 10:29 am : link

The offense looks lousy but I keep hearing it doesn t matter because it s preseason. But this team couldn't run the ball last year. It s the same line and it hasn't t been able to run this year preseason or not.

I try not to take too much
djm : 8/29/2016 10:58 am : link
but it's also not to be taken too lightly...

The OL is going to be up and down.
The Offense in general is going to be up and down.
The RBs are once again boring and uninspiring --it's the biggest weakness on this team once again.

The Defense will be a strength.

And finally, the preseason is fucking terrible. I look forward to watching these games every year because we are all starved for football and about 10 minutes into the first game I realize i'd rather watch horseflies fuck.
i watched the NYG Jets game twice

and I came away convinced that RBS are leaving too much meat on the bone as usual. That's not to say the OL played well or didn't struggle. It did struggle at times but the RBs on this team never, ever ever ever make something out of nothing. They have no sizzle. No wiggle. They get all theirs based on blocking.

I want an alpha bad ass RB on this team so bad. That's the elixir this offense needs. A hulking RT wouldn't hurt of course...but gimme the talented RB that elevates the OL. Wait till next year in that regard.

They absolutely have to develop a better RB here.
Perkins is a guy who can get yards without great blocking.

Hard to disagree here djm. Just take a look at what Forte was doing against our defense. He didn't break off anything huge by any means but he extended broken plays and consistently got something when nothing was there. At least that stood out to me.

if they don't pick up two better players for the right side of the OLINE. This o-line is horrible. We have absolutely no running game and not because of the RBs. Eli is rushed on every pass play.

Also not impressed with the play calling. How do you run the ball at 3rd down and 11 (especially when you have seen that you have no running game to speak of)?

If we get 6 wins with this o-Line it will be a miracle.

I would not have signed Vereen in 2015. To me VEreen is a JAG. He's ok at what's asked of him. Won't get the QB killed and he's adept at running routes, all that...but he's pretty average to me.

I can't really blame the Giants for signing Vereen as there was a huge need for a pass catching RB but i'd much rather have Forte right now. He's better than every RB on the Giants roster by a wide margin. I don't care if he's 100 years old.

Unfortunately this organization doesn't think that way.
Personally, as a long time fan, I find it annoying
that they will constantly keep a draft pick over an UDFA.
Even if said UDFA has really outperformed the draft pick!
I am not talking specifically about Williams, just a general
statement. Darkwa missed a block, rather have him on this roster than a fumble prone Rainey. Darkwa was playing well
on ST's, so I would keep him.
I am not sure if they ever were to give him some burn at
RB, he wouldn't be better than Williams.
it's not all on the OL
djm : 8/29/2016 1:44 pm : link
plays are breaking down due to missed blocks by the TE or Eli tripping over the turf monster or the RBs missing the hole or illegal formation penalty. IT's all of the above.

It's the easy thing to point out. Everyone is all over the OL right now. Running play goes for 2 yards? It's the OL right? It's not always that simple. The OL has struggled but the entire offense has along with it. They have two weeks or so to get things right. Luckily, these last 3 weeks are meaningless. The OL looked even worse last pre-season. They still scored close to 400 pts last year.
Carson
djm : 8/29/2016 1:45 pm : link
Darkwa has missed more than just a block. He missed at least 6 last Saturday. The guy is a disaster.
THe O-Line
PaulBlakeTSU : 8/29/2016 1:46 pm : link
is struggling (though I expect that to improve). The bigger problem is that our TE blocking is atrocious. We have to leave a TE in to help block the edge rush, but Donnell particularly is ineffective blocking. All it does is give Eli one less option to throw to.

another big take from the pre-season
djm : 8/29/2016 1:48 pm : link
the Giants offense hasn't run enough plays. Thanks to various mistakes they can't stay on the field. If Eli hits a WR for a first down the OL has a chance to gel some more. Hasn't happened.
I've not been fortunate to see many of the games.....
Reb8thVA : 8/29/2016 2:15 pm : link
but it does seem like the Giants have to potential makings of a strong secondary over the next few years. For the first time they have two young and talented guys at the Safety position. Apple and Jenkins will man he corners for the next few years. DRC will probably be nudged out next year and replaced with another draft pick.

They still have to play the games and all this potential could turn out to be misplaced hope but at this juncture, I'll choose to be optimistic.
Fats, I'm not concerned about the results of games ....
Crispino : 8/29/2016 3:04 pm : link
or the fact that the offense isn't scoring in the preseason. I'm concerned because re watching the games has shown that our offensive line is losing one on one battles on a consistent basis. They are getting overpowered in both the run and pass games.
That there doesn't seem to be any sense of urgency,
Doomster : 8/29/2016 3:43 pm : link
that the offense is not executing plays......
Two things stand out
Torrag : 8/29/2016 3:46 pm : link

Gross Blau Oberst : 8/30/2016 8:03 am : link
The defense looks much better than last few years. A reason for hope and optimism that the team can hold off opposing offenses late in games.

The offseason spending spree appears to be money well spent on Vernon and Snacks and Jenkins.

NFL teams cannot have adequate quality depth at all positions, once again the Giants lack quality depth along the Oline.

The new zone blocking scheme and new coaching techniques will take some time for the linemen to adjust to and become comfortable with.

The injury bug seems to be much less a factor so far - may it stay that way all season.

McAdoo seems to be doing OK as a rookie head coach - no glaringly obvious gafs and he doesn't appear overwhelmed.

The secondary appears to be much better. Keeping Collins at Strong Safety and the emergence of Thompson as Free Safety is very encouraging. The Giants have talented depth at Safety and CB. Very important in a pass happy league.

Eli Apple appears to be a very talented and capable CB - even as a rookie. He could contribute greatly this year.

While the offense has not played well, the team has not shown any signs of game planning and the left side of the line will stabilize once Pugh returns this week.

John Jerry is not as bad as some BBIers contend. Newhouse, may be as bad as some BBIers contend. Hart is the not the savoir that some BBIers contend either.

Williams looks better so far this season, and Darkwa looks like he has regressed.

Disappointed that LaCosse was hurt and now cut. I thought he and Adams were the future at TE.

The TE's cannot effectively block. No confidence on Donnell. Tye has a mixed review - good as a receiver; not as good as a blocker. He may still develop. Adams will need time, but may come on later in the season.

This is..

Players win jobs based on their performance in practice and training camp. If there is a really close battle, perhaps a preseason game performance will tip the scales, but ever since the CBA, preseason games have taken on less and less importance.
