Who believes Romo's career is over?

Thats Gold, Jerry : 8/29/2016 12:43 pm
Have been listening to a lot of NFL radio on Sirius plus reading a bunch and basically most seem to be leaning to the fact Romo's career is finished basically because this latest injury is so serious and combined with his already known back troubles that he is endangering his post-career life if he plays again.

I'm not a doctor but the compressed fracture he has now could lead to paralysis if he does not allow it to completely heal and then basically stop playing football.

Not sure what anyone else feels but even though he is a Cowgirl, one hates to see a really good player's career end not on his own terms.
I heard he's fat too

so yah, he's done.
I felt it was over since last year
UConn4523 : 8/29/2016 12:47 pm : link
maybe not in the "I am retiring from football" sense, but I doubt he every string together a meaningful amount of consecutive starts again. He just can't take the abuse.
If he hasn't played his last game
Greg from LI : 8/29/2016 12:47 pm : link
He's getting down to the single digits, I'd imagine. He's 36 and he has had repeated back and collarbone injuries. The hit he took wasn't even particularly hard by NFL standards.

I think he'll come back and play a handful of games over the next season or two before hanging them up.

You would think the

Cowboys would be ready to move on. As for Romo he seems like such a competitor it might cloud his judgement. Great athletes quite often believe they can still do it.
I think it is over
Thegratefulhead : 8/29/2016 12:49 pm : link
Manning came back from neck surgery but Manning >>>>> Romo. They also play so much differently, Romo is going to try to excape and he going to continue to get hit hard. He is risking too much to continue.
I don't get why he doesn't switch
Aquasax : 8/29/2016 12:54 pm : link
full time to golf? He just missed Open qualifying. I have to imagine if he quit football and focused completely on golf, he could be semi-competitive.
You watch..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/29/2016 12:56 pm : link
he'll come back week 9 with the Cowboys at 2-6 and some people will be saying the Cowboys are going to win the division.

There is an air of irrational fear over that team here.

I think Romo is done if he knows what's good for him.

Not a golfer, so I ask, would his back hold up?

should retire for all the reasons everyone else has stated. Whether he does or not, who knows? A lot of athletes hang on much to long, even if it means compromising their future health.
The Cowboys can't move on
The Turk : 8/29/2016 12:58 pm : link
they owe him like $50 million the next 3 years (counting this one) and can't cut him without huge cap hits (like $20+ million)
For he own long term health...

Reading his comments however, I think he is not thinking that way at all. In any case, I don't think he has much left. His ability to extend plays leads to too many broken bones.

I kind of feel for the guy even though he is a Cowboy.
he's got no chance in golf
UConn4523 : 8/29/2016 1:04 pm : link
with his back issues. There's a handful of golfers who've had similar injuries of varying degrees (Couples, Tiger, Duval, etc) and for the most part, they can't compete, atleast not in a meaningful way.

Romo would have a hard time making the tour and that's before this new injury.
He is toast
BigBlueDownTheShore : 8/29/2016 1:08 pm : link
Injuries to the back are serious deals especially at his age.
While discussing the division on a thread a few weeks....
Crispino : 8/29/2016 1:11 pm : link
back, I said I thought the over/under on how many game he'd play before his next injury was 4. He didn't even ale it out of preseason. I've got to think he's done now. The collarbone would be the next injury as soon as he comes back, if he decides to. He should hang it up.
i dig his passion but he is a careless athlete...
GMAN4LIFE : 8/29/2016 1:14 pm : link
hope he goes and cares more about his long term health

He should retire if he's smart.
Similar to David Wright
teso56 : 8/29/2016 1:25 pm : link
Two guys that have meant a lot to their teams, solid leaders, always played hard and good citizens who their fans love and root for - but both coming to the end of the line and right now the uncertainty and inability to stay healthy that they bring to their teams is a liability and a detriment. Romo a more critical postion than wright but similar leaders and key guys for a decade on respective teams. And similar players too - at their best both were very good - but not the best
The Joneses being the Joneses, I can't help thinking...
Big Blue Blogger : 8/29/2016 1:30 pm : link
...that Romo's return will hinge more on Prescott's performance than any concern about Romo's long-term health. If Jones Sr. had been right about any of the monumental stiffs Dallas plugged it at QB last year, Romo probably would have stayed on IR. He didn't come back because it was safe for him to play. He came back because Weeden and Cassel were terrible, and Moore figured to be even worse.
It should be

given the current injury and his injury history. I doubt he will retire given his quest for a SB.
Depends on how much of that new contract he got last year

will still have to be paid by Jones if he retires due to injury

Because of the cap situation, the Cowboys would probably love it if he retires, or if they could reach an injury settlement. Personally, i'd love it if he hung around to be the highest paid backup. That would screw with their cap space for the next couple of years.

If he is released next year they will save $5m on the cap and have $19m in dead money. No big deal.
Considering the Cap hit they should

The Cowboys haven't been ambiguous about it.

They're pretty outward with confidence that he'll be back. It would benefit them to use cautious words at this point, so if they're saying things like they are, I do think it means he's going to be back.

He's definitely coming back. As a human being i just hope he doesn't get injured seriously.

I don't think he is even considering retiring. Probably the farthest thing from his mind.
Nope...

He is a borderline elite QB when healthy. He will come come back and continue to beat our ass like a drum.
It will be a
giantgiantfan : 8/29/2016 2:29 pm : link
tough call for him to make. He is signed through 2019. Next year he'll make $14 mil + $5 mil bonus. All of that is dead money to the Boys. The following year he is due $19.5 mil w/ $8.9 in dead money. If I'm him, I'll stick through it and grab the money unless I've saved wisely and want to walk without pain in 10-20 years.

If he continues to be injury prone I'd imagine the Cowboys cut him in 2018 and eat the $8.9 million as it still frees up another $10 million. That gives them time to see what they have in Dak and see if Romo can string together a full season in 2017.

is perhaps a stretch but as far as being a competitive difference maker, i think that's over with. He simply can't take hits.

Well, he obviously is NOT retiring this season.....

Next year, they could cut him...while he would have a 19.6 dead cap hit, they would save 14M in salary, for a net loss of 5.6M......

for the game winning FG when Bill was coach.

Give him credit for an unlikely career as an undrafted QB becoming a long term NFL starter. But I never thought he was that great, certainly not as great as the choir singing "Romo is back, Dallas runs the table" every year. He's a competent, average NFL QB with a penchant for gagging it up with the money on the table.
i don't
Les in TO : 8/29/2016 5:07 pm : link
think we've seen the last of tony romo on the football field. he has a strong will to play, even with the medical risks, and he trusts his talented offensive line and strong running game to keep him generally upright. he might not be so eager to come back if he played in front of the giants offensive line/running game.

his legacy right now is that of a guy who did well in the regular season but could not get the job done consistently in the playoffs. and that's not the legacy any quarterback worth their salt wants to leave.

that being said, I have no idea whether he can still play at a high level or if the cumulative effect of his injuries and the physical/psychological impact combined with his age will curb his performance.
For His Sake
