So, I'm taking the plunge and just bought an engagement ring for my long-time girlfriend.
Given that is obviously a significant expense, I know that it's important to get it insured ASAP.
I'm reaching out to my insurance broker to see if I can get it rolled into my renter's insurance, but I know there are separate jewelry insurance companies that can offer premiums based on a $0 deductible.
Any suggestions/tips? Is it best to just roll it into a program, or carry it separately?
I was renting when my wife and i got engaged and I took out a personal article policy from the same company we got our renters insurance (USAA) and covered the ring separately.
I had switched to Liberty Mutual and added more jewelry to the policy over the years, but it's still separate.
the good thing about it is lose it, damage it, etc. and it's fully replaced with no deductible. This has happened (damaged). It has diamonds on the side and one came out and we never saw it. replaced per policy with no additional charge.
If you insure the ring under your policy and your fiancé loses/damages the ring before you're married, is the loss covered? Can you insure something that's not in your family's possession? Better check that.
I had the diamond already and just had to pay for a band so I'd need it appraised to get it insured.

Usually the Jeweler from whom you got the diamond will appraise it for you. It is not in their best interest to low ball it.
Appraisal costs, especially from the source, are low.
I also use Jeweler's Mutual for many years. I find that appraisals are higher than the replacement value, so I do use a deductible.
