JPP: A playmaker with no sacks

KWALL2 : 9/12/2016 12:29 pm
Many here discounted his contributions last season because he "failed to finish or make plays". Another case of fans relying too much on sack numbers to evaluate a DL.

This Dallas game is an excellent example of a guy making plays and having an impact without the sacks.

JPP had at least 5 QB pressures that forced throwaways. And 2 of them came on consecutive plays to force a punt. This came late in the 4th, right after the Giants took the lead.

He worked Free and setup the inside move when we needed it. My 9 year old said "DEs aren't supposed to break ankles" which is what he did with the inside move. JPP forced the punt at a critical part of the game.

That's a guy making an impact with his quick QB pressures.

Only one game but I think we may have the best pair of DEs in the NFL in 2016. With Snacks and the big bump in team speed in back 7 this defense will help us compete for it all this year.

Very exciting start for NYG!
JPP Was Very Disruptive

I'm really looking forward to watching Vernon and JPP attack from the edges and having Snack and Hankins clog up the middle this year.

That move on Free was something else

Also noticed a few double teams. It bodes well for the unit as they come together.
Great comment...

I have to admit - your 9 year old had the best comment in your post though. Love it.
Towards the end JPP was having trouble getting up,
idinkido : 9/12/2016 12:37 pm : link
he waved his replacement back to the bench, and got up and kept playing, kept pressuring. He played with a lot of heart and so did the rest of our defense.
JPP was ineffective early on
est1986 : 9/12/2016 12:38 pm : link
He turned it on late in the game and caused a lot of hurries when they really mattered, OV did as well but it's clear our guys our better against the run than they are rushing the passers. Spags has got to be creative with stunts, LB, and DB blitzes for us to really get home.
Yeah

Hes a lot funnier than me. But he is a huge Steeler fan which kills me.
JPP is a game changer
Chris684 : 9/12/2016 12:39 pm : link
Always has been. For some reason the "general" NYG fanbase has always been hard on him (hard to believe after 2011) but when the guy is on the field he is disruptive.

The other amazing thing is that somehow people seemed to think he is either lazy or lacks effort. He has always been a relentless, max effort football player.

I'm so glad he's back.
He had QB pressure
KWALL2 : 9/12/2016 12:41 pm : link
early in the game too. He was not ineffective early on.
Having two DE's who play the run and pass....
Tesla : 9/12/2016 12:43 pm : link
so equally effectively is just absolutely huge.

I agree with the end of your post KWALL where you state that our D is gonna be real good this year and that is going to make us a legit Super Bowl contender.
Kev, I mentioned that in another thread. The pressures that is.
Big Blue '56 : 9/12/2016 12:43 pm : link
He did otoh (and my main concern all along) miss a few tackles/wrap-ups that with a perfectly functioning hand would have been made, imo. And no, before you say it, ANYONE can and does miss tackles with TWO good hands..I just believe his strength isn't there. Whether that's a question of whether his beleaguered hand will gain more strength in time or this is as good as it gets. Time will tell..Still just one game..

Maybe it has something to do with his seasons after 2011, which includes arriving at camp overweight - and then blowing off several fingers and all that followed.

I'm glad he's playing well. I still don't think he's the same JPP of the 2011 season, but he's better than the alternatives on the roster.

JPP played the most snaps on the DL...
Dan in the Springs : 9/12/2016 12:47 pm : link
he was on the field for all but two defensive snaps. OV was on the field for all but four.

Jackrabbit was on the field for all of the defensive snaps, and DRC was only out for one.

I was pleased (but not surprised) with the performance of the DL, and JPP in particular. We better enjoy him this year because I'm not entirely sure he will be a Giant next year.

Also - Jackrabbit was my biggest pleasant surprise of the game. I don't know what grade he's going to be given, but he had tight coverage all game long from what I could see. I'm going to watch the all-22 angle tonight and will focus closely on the secondary.
Full team snap counts - ( New Window )

KWALL2 : 9/12/2016 12:48 pm : link
JPP was exceptional. His QB pressure % was higher in 2012 than 2011. Just the sacks weren't there. But he was a top player in 2012.

On the field he always played hard and hustled.
I suspect that JPP is in the best shape of his life.
manh george : 9/12/2016 12:52 pm : link
With JPP knowing that his career and a huge amount of money is on the line, I have no doubt that he hauled ass in the off-season. This is not a knock on preparation in earlier years. This year is just different.

People are hard on him because as good as he's been, he's never really maxed out his potential (i.e consistent 12-15 sack player). And the lazy moniker some people attribute to him (I'm not one of those) is due to his offseason efforts. He's always given 120% effort on the field.

giants#1 : 9/12/2016 12:54 pm : link
in the first half. They just weren't rushing Dak as aggressively, likely by design since there were no 3rd and long situations (Dallas consistently had 3rd and 4-7 yds) and they wanted to contain the rush. Even on the 3rd and medium situations, Dallas was still going with short underneath stuff which doesn't give the rush much chance to get there.

is a bunch of BS. He had legitimate back issues and yet still put up a very nice season in 2012.

Comes back slow in 2013 after the surgery, finally starts making a difference again and then messes up his shoulder.

The truth is that a healthy JPP has proven over and over again to be a highly productive/dominant JPP.

12-15 sacks every year is a unrealistic standard to set.

Ran together during camp, but they both stayed strong through the whole second half while battling a tough OL and a team that dominated us in time of possession, and neither took a series off.

That was exemplary work, they are both studs.

Time will tell. The gameplan going in was to stop the run and not let Dak beat us with his feet. Mission accomplished. Now, lets see how many sacks we get against Brees. I'm saying at least 3
JPP was solid
B in ALB : 9/12/2016 2:01 pm : link
You could see him setting up Free for his eventual shots inside during the 1st quarter.

But you can't discount having Snacks next to him causing Martin to slide left and account for him leaving Free on an even bigger island out there. Plus the early corner blitzes by DRC gave them something to think about.

And you'd think Witten would do a solid job of blocking JPP in those cases but JPP just threw him around like a ragdoll. I think we're seeing Witten's age shine through a bit.

I thought this was a really good game by Spags - especially after that first crazy long drive and the fact that they got points on their first two drives. Spags mixed up coverages really well, shuffled the DL around a bit, the LBs were in good positions to stop the run (basically neutralizing their supposed big threat) and Prescott really couldn't get big chunks of yardage through the air.

Did Dez Bryant play yesterday?

Thought in second half the D-line started to make Dak uncomfortable as his throws started going higher. But, first half was like a walk in the park as he was not getting any pressure.

I do agree bigger culprits were the DTs as I thought Dak had a nice clear vision straight ahead as nobody was in his face...

Maybe for every year, but its not unrealistic for an elite DE to average that during his prime. Strahan averaged 12 sacks/season from 26-34. Von Miller's averaged 12 to start his career including an injury shortened season. Jared Allen averaged 13 sacks/season from his rookie year to his age 31 season.

And while those are high expectations, that's what many (most?) expected from JPP after his 2011 campaign. So while he's been a great player, he's still fallen short of the lofty expectations that were set for him after his early success.

It would be like Beckham maxing out as a Rod Smith level player. A team drafting Rod Smith in the 1st round every year is going to have some great success, but after his 1st two seasons, I think most would consider that a disappointing career for Beckham.

I would suggest to give it a few games. Both Vernon and JPP will get their sacks. Both have in the past. That hey play the run equally well is a bonus and not as common. Dallas' OL is one of the better and the run was utterly shut down. Spags played it very safe in the first half. Once he took off the training wheels Dallas' O was crap. If not for the INT they most likely don't score.
top 3 in history?
giants#1 : 9/12/2016 3:09 pm : link
He's not even top 3 in team history. I think an easy argument can be made that he's the Giants 4th best pass rusher in the last 2 decades (Strahan, Tuck, Osi). The point is/was that after his 2011 season, many expected his career would be more comparable to Strahan's than Tuck's.

get, and they do deserve it, it's odd how JPP is often criticized or overlooked.

You can make the argument that JPP when healthy is far more dominant than Tuck or Osi ever were.

Tuck had his own injury issues and had to basically be begged out on to the practice field by Rolle before turning it on in 2011.

Osi was definitely a dominant pass rusher with a unique skill set of causing strip sacks but vs. the run was a different story.

JPP's 2011 was the best season for a Giants defensive player not named Taylor or Strahan.

He's had more great seasons than not and as mentioned only injuries or fireworks slow him down. 2013 season should be forgiven as he was playing through a brutal njury. His back was fucked. Who even plays through that? Whenever the guy is somewhat healthy he's a great player. 2011-2012-2014 all top notch seasons. Half of 2015 high quality. Tuck and Strahan both had some relatively quiet seasons due to injury too. Some of you have selective memory issues.

I'd try and lock JPP up right now. He deserves a long term deal.

Oh and limerick your post is just dumb. Omg he's got a gut... The guy would eat you as a snack and then run sprints.
