Presenting our new fullback....at least for 2 plays on the Giants final drive. Brett Jones was lined up as fullback for 1st and 2nd down on the final series of plays. The result was a gain of 1 and a loss of 3, but he actually did his job pretty well.
The Cowboys put 8 men in the box on these 2 plays, so the extra lineman in the backfield might have had a negative impact by allowing the defense to focus more on the run, but Jones demolished LB Gachkar. He makes contact with him at the line of scrimmage (Cowboy 46). Jennings is tackled quickly because Donnell can't make his block and Jerry can't get a block on Lee. By the time Jennings is tackled for essentially no gain, Jones has pushed his man 4 yards down field to the 42. He keeps pushing him well past the 40 and out of the picture.
The play didn't work, but it was fun to see the big guy line up as a FB and lay the wood on the linebacker.
Can you breakdown the play(s) where Flowers was lined up on the right side (I think Beatty played LT with Flowers shifting to jumbo TE)?
I have suspected that when Beatty re-signed, that he might end up doing some of this as well. Perhaps he still will, once he is acclimated fully. I have long felt that there were opportunities for teams to use back-up OL that are quick but possibly a little undersized to be starters as blocking backs.
He's on IR not the practice squad.

DT Crawford looks confused when he lines up and notices Tye is playing tackle, he looks back at the LB, but then quickly gets back in his stance with no change to the alignment.
Pugh (circled) pulls and helps open up a big lane for Jennings. Newhouse does a good job of blocking his man to the inside, and Flowers easily keeps his man away from the play. Crawford is able to disengage with Richburg an make the tackle 7 yards downfield. If it wasn't him it probably would have bee Lee at the same spot. A nice 7 yard gain.
This would be a nice play to review with a better camera angle.
...
Beatty was inactive.

Yeah, I was responding to giants#1. I don't have my notes in front of me ru now, but they used Donnell and Tye in the H back and FB position a number of times.
I like the idea of using a backup OL in a fullback role. It seems like Tye and Donnell both struggle in this role. They just aren't good at lead blocking. I was impressed with Jones in this role for the two plays he was in.
Like said in my first post, having Jones in the backfield does make it easier for the defense to discount the pass. And you could see that by how Dallas defended it (though at that stage of the game a run was expected anyway). For them to use him in that role more frequently I think they would have to pass with him as FB as well.
Lee shoots the gap and makes the tackle along with Irving who runs right through Donnell. Even with Donnell's lousy block, Jennings had a chance at a big gain if Lee gets blocked.
It's hard to see exactly what happens in the middle. It looks like Jerry trips over Thornton as Richburg takes him to the ground. If Jerry is able to get to Lee, Jennings has a chance of getting a first down and putting the game away.
If LD just forces his man outside it's fine but he lets the guy go INSIDE so he can easily disrupt the run.
Guy is killing this team, who cares if he makes an occasional good catch.

Only thing Donnell's DE does is fall on the pile after Lee stuffed the play.
There's always an unblocked defender the RB has to make miss. It can't be 2. It's the difference between 2-3 yards and 0 yards.
Just look at it.
That happens constantly, week in, week out. That's not OK.

Lee makes the tackle. If Lee isn't there, Jennings is long gone. Yes a bad block by Donnell.
Oh and I think Donnell should have been cut before the season

Donnell had a terrible "block" for sure. But, Jennings is stuffed even if Donnell makes a perfect block. Lee made the tackle, and Donnell's man made little impact on the play. Even with Donnell getting beat, I think Jennings may have been able to get through the hole, if Lee had been effectively blocked.
If you are looking for a play where Donnell got destroyed and it blew up the play, the next play in the series is the one you want. The play probably wasn't going anywhere anyway, but Donnell got beat so badly there's no way to really know.
It was the only other play Jones was in at FB:

Donnell had a good day blocking, you fucking moron
+1, awesome as always and thanks!
How we've gone 3 years keeping this guy on the field so often is scary and we havent rven gotten to his ball security. As others have mentioned hes more of a #3 TE at best who can play in some red zone packages but hes demonstrated week in, week out he cant get the job done blocking. What we are seeing above is not abnormal for him.
Giggity
