JPP after the season...

Blue Angel : 9/14/2016 12:21 pm
How do you think the Giants are going to handle the JPP situation after the season this time around?
Hopefully
darren in pdx : 9/14/2016 12:23 pm : link
they can pay the man and keep him on the team.
Dam..we just started

Lets see how the rest of the games go

That is how the Giants will handle it right now
I think it's WAY to early to know.

Owa comes on and gives the Giants a reason not to bring him back.

Hard to say if that will be the case though.
He has to produce
averagejoe : 9/14/2016 12:36 pm : link
just like any player in his walk year. If he has a productive season I'm confident a deal will be worked out.
I think he will deserve a fair offer based on his production

I am assuming he won't return to being a 12+ sack guy. If that is the case he's not going to get top-tier money but somewhere in the ballpark of Ayers/Tamba Hali money could probably work, thinking like 3y/~20 mil with 10-12 guaranteed. It will be hard to shake the 'damaged goods' label but his persistence has really impressed me, and I thought his pass rush looked as refined as ever last week against Doug Free.

Still, anything more than that isn't worth it, IMO, considering some of our impending FAs over the next few years (Hankins this year; Pugh, OBJ, Richburg the following) and the need to perhaps get one of them locked up long-term before the expiration of their respective deals before OBJ's assured blockbuster contract.

Should Owa or Romeo Okwara really come on this season (both are essentially rookies), that would certainly help, but in any event, we need at least 3 quality DEs to rotate through, and JPP/Vernon is a formidable combo at the right price

You franchise him if he has a monster year.

There's no reason to be scared of having a bunch of great players.
Probably ...

what happens in the next 15 games will determine that
Too early - I need to see more of his play

If JPP puts up the numbers...

then I am sure we will keep him and get him signed. So if he has a great season he will get paid. If he has a good but not great year, I am sure he will be compensated accordingly.

If he doesn't, he will be gone. No sense getting our shorts in a knot after game 1.
wouldn't they have to have actually seen him PLAY

the whole season before deciding?
The luxury

of having 2 very good DEs cannot be understated. Let's see what happens after the year.
I am hoping for
Jay on the Island : 9/14/2016 1:57 pm : link
JPP to have a great season with 12+ sacks while providing the usual excellent run defense and then giving the Giants a slight discount because they stood by him during his accident. I am also hoping for Odi to break out during the second half of the season providing the pressure at DT like Tuck did in 2007.
I think both parties will come to an agreement
David in LA : 9/14/2016 2:01 pm : link
JPP sounds like he's thankful for the Giants' support to me.
When Bratzke left Strahan behind, someone said
Ivan15 : 9/14/2016 2:01 pm : link
If you don't have two good DEs, you don,t have one.

That was kind of true because Strahan wasn't a real good pass rusher until the Giants found another one.

So yeah, you pay JPP what you can afford until you find his replacement.

Toth029 : 9/14/2016 2:57 pm : link
Better question is, can they afford both he and Hankins?

Two dominant DT's were hugely beneficial to the win this past Sunday. I thought JPP struggled often vs. Free, and he got 1 on 1's.

Put the 5 years for 60 million deal back on the table to start and go from there.. This was the offer made to JPP while he was on the Franchise Tag, this offer was withdrawn after his Fourth of July incident/injury.
I think if you wait untiil next spring
est1986 : 9/14/2016 3:15 pm : link
He's as good as gone. Good DE's market now adays is unreal.
Let's see what he does this season
AnnapolisMike : 9/14/2016 3:17 pm : link
And what everyone else does...

depends on his season
dunk320 : 9/14/2016 3:52 pm : link
JPP could go into the off-season in one of two ways. Either with a huge season and will break the bank, or he has an average season because of his hand. I think he will have a huge year and make himself a very wealthy man. Giants have the cap space to pay him and I think they will as Reese does value his own picks very highly.
Kinda depends on what he does this season.
Mike in Long Beach : 9/14/2016 4:24 pm : link
.
he could also have an average season
fkap : 9/14/2016 4:24 pm : link
because he's average. To be fair, he's above average, but there's a reason the Giants didn't pay him top dollar as a FA prior to blowing up his hand.

If he does average, or good, he's going to want a top dollar payday, and some team will likely pay him. IMO, he has to play very good, or let him go.
He is still fairly young
ChathamMark : 9/14/2016 4:28 pm : link
at 27 too. 28 next January 1.
JPP has a lot to prove.....
Doomster : 9/14/2016 10:15 pm : link
He has to put up numbers, and show that hand isn't a liability.....having Vernon opposite him takes some of the pressure off him......

It's not necessarily about the numbers, but more about what kind of disruption he is to offenses.....

Problem is, you can't have all these high cap numbers on a large number of players, and not have enough for the rest of of the roster...
The game has evolved into
greatgrandpa : 9/14/2016 11:54 pm : link
Almost a pure passing league with the run game as support. Even RBs are catching more passes than ever. The only way to slow/stop an offense is with a ferocious pass rush to get the ball out of the QBs hand before receivers can finish their route. (See Tom Brady super bowl hero watching the game from flat on his back) if JPP has 10 plus sacks and constant hurries this year the Giants will find a way to sign him. Pass pressure turns game plans to dust. It will be interesting to see how Brees reacts this year after having a week to survey the field in last years game. I'm hoping he won't know what (or who) hit him.
