All 22 film review - NYG VS. EZEKIAL ELLIOT

ron mexico : 9/14/2016 12:36 pm
Excellent analysis here

The New York Giants brought their revamped defense into Dallas to take on one of the best offensive lines in the league and one of the most hyped up RB prospects since Adrian Peterson in Ezekial Elliot. With Dak Prescott making his first start at QB, everyone and their mother expected a heavy dose of Elliot running behind the heralded offensive line and expectation for Elliot were for him to have a strong opening game. The Giants didn’t get the memo though and decided that a rude awakening was in store for him. Elliot was only able to get 2.5 yards per carry and Giants were buzzing in the backfield all game. So how did the Giants make one of the strongest running games on paper look anemic with Elliot on the field? The four main factors I saw watching the film were that the WILL LBs were aggressive in attacking the line of scrimmage, that Damon Harrison, Johnathan Hankins, and Olivier Vernon were dominating the interior linemen of the Cowboys, the safeties were aggressive and sure tacklers, and that the Cowboys TEs were not capable of blocking Vernon or Jason Pierre-Paul.

took Elliot and Dez out of the game. If they don't make big plays the Cowboys lose. Our DL and DB's are vastly improved from last year. If the Giants had better LB's this could be a top ten defense.
wow, Vernon was just abusing Witten

Welcome to the New NY Giants, same as the old NY Giants. (As in what the Giants once were!)

Loven' it!

Powerful stuff. Very insightful.

The linebackers are improved and this is/will be a top ten defense.

The Cowboys scored 1 TD, off a turnover deep in Giants territory. The Giants held the Cowboys to 4.4 yards per play, their QB to 55% passing and no TD's, and their star RB to 2.5 yards per carry. Casillas had 11 tackles, everyone did their job and didn't seem to have any mental mistakes/blown coverages. This defense is going to be very good and they had a strong opening game. I am very encouraged. Cheers to good health.

showing Thompson not get juked out of the tackle after covering 10+ yards across the field for a tackle. Him, Behre, and Collins could be a ferocious Safety trio. Would really love it if these 3 stay healthy all year and allow us that extra, rangy S/LB'er hybrid.
That's how you play team defense

Funny how some can't look at our defense and see just how good it is, eh? We're making a run gentlemen. A lot of season ahead of us but the Giants stocked the team to make serious noise.
Wow! This is great!

Really shows you how much Vernon dominated without all of the stats to back it up. OV and Snacks are monsters up front to go along with Hank and JPP. Going to be interesting to see the total change in approach when they go up against a pass-happy Saints team as opposed to the run-heavy Cowboys.
Aboslutely
sshin05 : 9/14/2016 1:13 pm : link
love this sort of stuff. The run defense and fits were excellent evident by their physical play and being able to diagnose plays quickly. Once the TE's couldn't maintain their blocks consistently, Elliot kept expecting the DE to crash down everytime like in play 6 where he bounced to the outside. Terrific read.
Casillas

its one game, but he was flat out awful (think he's the one who tackled Vernon on the near sack too). Not sure Jerry has ever had a game that bad!

Love articles like this that get into the nitty gritty of what goes on in the trenches. OV and others throwing Witten and La’el Collins around like rag dolls is just the cherry on top.

I feel very good about our defensive line with Collins and Casillas backing it up. If they can do that to the best offensive line in the NFL and stop a RB like Elliot, then we are going to have a fun year.

Best shot of the game though, was watching Jerry Jones bury his face in his hands in disbelief as he believed with all his heart that his vaunted O-line and a power runner would easily dismantle the Giants run defense. His expression: priceless

the benefit on the whole defense of having two good DTs. It was always one good one in, another out.
Safeties. Tackling.

Collins. Berhe. Thompson. 2 thumpers and all 3 with good tackling fundamentals. Something that went missing in the TC era after the new CBA.

We don't win the game without run defense like that. This is why the skins are going to get gashed against Dallas.

Not just 2016, but 2017 after another offseason. This front four is fantastic. Impactful draft picks. Eli to our trio of WRs (and hopefully more). Top-flight CBs. Sunday can't get here soon enough.

Without taking anything away from Hankins, he is now the least talented player on the DL.

That is very exciting.

Poor Zeke.

The playbook on how to stop him is already out. Its going to start by blowing up the TE assingments. Good as their line is, its now got a pretty obvious weak spot.

That is definitely a ting of booty!

and not just for Snacks --

Vernon knocks Whitten back fifteen yards and on to his ass
Our Collins knocks their Collins back fifteen yards

only one Cowboy pushes forward and it takes him out of the play - all the rest were pushed back by a blue player and evisserated

that play is utter domination of a set of very vaunted Offensive weapons

Either La'el Collins is bad
mikeinbloomfield : 9/15/2016 10:10 am : link
or Vernon is going to be an absolute beast against the run. Vernon just tossed him aside on multiple plays.

Also Casillas gets a ton of credit for his aggressiveness and play diagnosis.

The only thing I worry about is a team like New Orleans who can use that aggressiveness against the Giants. We all know the Saints will run out of passing formations and pass out of run formations.
