If Jacoby Brissett starts next week for the Patriots, it'd be the first black quarterback they have started in team history. The Giants would be the only remaining team to have never started a black quarterback.
The NFL had been integrated in the 1920s, but by 1934 a color barrier had been established. The Giants weren't the first team to break it, but they were one of the first few when they signed Tunnell in 1948.
have not had a black head coach either, a bit of a surprise given the long history of the team.
Does the long history of the team matter when there is not a long history of African American coaches in the league?
sure, there was a league wide issue until the rooney rule came into effect and not unique to the gmen. but as the giants have been around since the 1920s, they've had more opportunities than say the seahawks, jaguars or panthers to hire African American coaches or starting QB. especially playing in a socially progressive market like NY.
Let me suggest something more positive ... If Brissett plays and Mike Glennon also gets in ... there would be 4 QBs from NC State in the NFL... How many other schools can say that ???
Of having eli manning not miss a game since 2004. And it seems a lot more black quarterbacks are starting to be more prevalent in college and in the pros.
The Giants also had Rosey Brown as coach prettty early on, and did Â
bring in Hank Washington one offseason (1967) for a trial at QB...and it was a big story at that point, as there had been no black QBs in the league to that point. Link - ( New Window )
Excuse me. Ryan Perriloux was PRIMED for stardom but he could never start because of the whiplash he sustained from being on and off the practice squad 3 times every week.
In all seriousness the reason for this has nothing to do with anything other than the fact that we have since the mid 80's only had about 10 starting QB's.
Simms, Hostetler, Brown, Kanell, Graham, Maddox, Collins, Palmer, Warner and Eli.
We are blessed in that respect.
Why don't we look at how many teams have employed black punters? We're on a SHORT list with my man Rodney.
Might work better with Josh Johnson that Logan Thomas, since Johnson is on the roster. Not a bad idea though: one snap would be enough to get the monkey off their back. He could take a knee.

On second thought, I guess the starting QB keeps getting older, so there's that.
Oh wait...
1 for 7 for 12 yards.

Not bad for a second tier program.

But sadly, I don't think he started a game.
He kept mumbling about soul food.

In the last 12 years one QB has taken all the snaps and his name is Eli.
Which we all know has a higher incidence in black males.
Nor have they played any Sumo wrestlers on the O- or D-Lines.

sure Jared Lorenzen ate a black guy one time.

Rex mumbles about sole food.
But NOOOOOO, Coughlin had to start his boy Eli. And look how it turned out!

#Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo (sprained AC joint) won’t start Thursday vs. #Texans. But there is hope he’s back by Week 4. Huge break for NE
We did it!
So many Giants fans scared of the next quarterback. I wonder why. Because of the possibility that he might be.......?

Not looking forward to the day we have to look for a new QB. Scary.

Another Dave Brown
Good point. That is why we keep Eli hanging around so long...we don't want to break this racist streak of ours...
