Looking Ahead to Washington

Old Dirty Beckham : 9/19/2016 11:32 am
Some quick stats looking at the Skins so far.

They're converting on 36 percent of their third downs while giving up 57 percent.

Cousins has only thrown 1 touchdown in their two games.

They've given up 5 rushing touchdowns. Their OL has allowed five sacks through two games. They've rushed for 68 yards pers game while allowing 124.

The Giants should be able to make Washington a 1 dimensional team. I think we'll get our first turnover this weekend as well.

Washington's D has been terrible
PatersonPlank : 9/19/2016 11:34 am : link
38 vs Pitt, 27 yesterday to Dak on the road, we should roll up some points. I listened to DC radio this morning and they are lambasting the D.
Don't over look them

They are 0-0 this week
I like to think it's an easy win
AnnapolisMike : 9/19/2016 11:37 am : link
But divisional games rarely are. The Giants looked dominant yesterday...but could have easily lost the game. Giants are 2-0.

Stop the run and make Cousins beat you on through the air. Control the game on offense by running and taking an occasional deep shot. Hold on the to the damn ball.

will be playing for their season in many ways. 0-3 is a big hole to fall into. They're going to be desperate.

The Giants will have to match their intensity level. If they do I think they'll win. On paper we have more talent.

division games are struggles, especially against an 0-2 opponent that won the division the prior year. if we can cut out the turnovers I think we can rout them the way our defense has played.
Also its not just the players bitching about Cousins
PatersonPlank : 9/19/2016 11:39 am : link
A defensive player criticized the Coordinator for not making adjustments during the game. Basically saying they are being out coached.
Giants need to stop turning the ball over
mfsd : 9/19/2016 11:43 am : link
Do that and we should be fine this week

Pretty sure none of us are going to be playing in the game on Sunday. I never understand comments like this.

Just win by 1 point and get to 3-0.

3-0 in NFC

2-0 in division

bury Washington in process

It will not be easy
For those doown in DC

What's the issue related to Cousins?
We all thought yesterday was going to be easy
The_Boss : 9/19/2016 11:48 am : link
Assume nothing with the NYG, who have an aversion to making things easy. In addition, Washington will be coming in with thoughts of saving their season. I want to be 3-0 heading into our 2 most difficult games on the schedule (@ Minny/@ GB) badly. Take nothing for granted. The NYG had better be ready for what type of opponent they'll be facing in 6 days.

Not on paper but rather on the field.
They have a lot of weapons on offense.
Big Blue Blogger : 9/19/2016 11:50 am : link
Obviously, that doesn't matter if Cousins keeps missing easy throws. But if he plays at the upper end of his skill level, they can score. And I don't think their running game is as bad as the stats would indicate.

There's not much about Washington's D that will scare anyone. Their corners are pretty good. Everything else is "meh", though Kerrigan will make an occasional play.

If the Giants are minus-three on turnovers again (or minus-anything, for that matter) and settle for FGs, they are likely to lose. They are the better team, but I don't see a huge margin as this early stage.
Were you all the same folks who were saying the Giants would
ZogZerg : 9/19/2016 11:52 am : link
light up the Saints because of what Oakland did?

Each game is different. This is a must win for the skins. I expect a tough, close game.
A lot of weapons?
Greg from LI : 9/19/2016 11:53 am : link
Not really. Their backs are terrible. Jackson can still burn you and Reed is a mismatch, but the rest of their receivers are possession types who don't scare anyone.
We haven't had an easy win yet...
WideRight : 9/19/2016 11:53 am : link
Against a rookie QB's first game

Against a D with a bad and injured secondary.

The only reason it wouldn't be close is if Washington lays an egg. Individually and collectively, they will not let that happen against us.

They've made I believe 10 trips to the Red Zone in both games. Although since they can't run the ball, they've fallen in love with throwing the fade pass to their WRs, which really is not a strength of this team or Cousin's.

If they clean up their Red Zone play calling, they could be difficult to matchup this week, especially with Jordan Reed.
I think the Giants owe this team a whooping.
Brown Recluse : 9/19/2016 11:54 am : link
Last November was embarrassing.
"Jittery" was the word of morning down in DC
ZogZerg : 9/19/2016 11:54 am : link
This is how they are describing Cousin's performance and this was the concern the players had about him.
How have Trent Williams & Morgan Moses looked?
cosmicj : 9/19/2016 11:57 am : link
If either has been shaky, those DEs of ours are going to spend the game in the Skins backfield.
Hopefully they diffuse the Norman bullshit during the week
bceagle05 : 9/19/2016 11:57 am : link
and just play football. We're a much better team, and at home. I think we win convincingly.
RE: Washington will be playing for their season in many ways ...
Trainmaster : 9/19/2016 11:59 am : link
Lest we forget, in 2013 the 0-4 Giants were desperate for a win when hosting Philadelphia in week 5. We laid an egg at home and ended the day 0-5 (on the way to 0-6).

I somewhat agree about the "playing for the season" angle for Washington, but let's step on their throats and bury them!

Turnovers are the great equalizer
Simms11 : 9/19/2016 12:01 pm : link
and if we hold onto those balls yesterday it's a whole new ball game with us winning big. Need to take care of "The Duke", as Mac would say, but I really want them to concentrate on that this week too. I saw too many balls held too loosely and away from the body.
It's early
kash94 : 9/19/2016 12:01 pm : link
but obviously playing tougher teams will have some impact on them.

Remember that the team started off last year 5-7 before winning the last four against:
1- A Chicago Bears team that was 5-7 at the time
2- A Bills team that was 6-7 at the time
3- A Eagles team that was 6-7 at the time
4- A Dallas Cowboys team that was 4-11 and had lost 11 of their last 14

It's early but their schedule last year was incredibly easy.
Piggybacking off my last post.
Brown Recluse : 9/19/2016 12:06 pm : link
The last time these two teams played, the Giants made it easy for the Redskins by shooting themselves in the foot like they did yesterday.

Manning threw three interceptions, two of which bounced out of the receivers' hands and into the defenders. Then he threw a pick in the end zone.

This team just needs to not get back into the habit of the kind of stupid mistakes they made last season and like the ones they started making again yesterday.

We better beat 'em
lugnut : 9/19/2016 12:06 pm : link
cuz after that it's Minny, GB, and B'more back-to-back-to back. Two of 'em away.

Sorry to be the Negative or at least Nervous Nelly, but this game could be a stinker for us. Yup, we're better on paper and opposing QB has sucked and we're at home...and how many of those games have we lost in recent history? Hopefully the regime change has really taken hold.

I think Crowder and Doctson have playmaking ability too, although it might be more potential than proven at this point. Chris Thompson could be dangerous out of the backfield if they can get him out in space on a linebacker.

Probably safe to say Vernon Davis's playmaker days are behind him, although the defense still has to account for him when he's on the field. I agree that Matt Jones is starting only because they don't have a better option.
So we're gonna lose then. lol

Even last year's
kash94 : 9/19/2016 12:11 pm : link
division winning team had a lot of warts.

Cousins had a great year but they were:
1- 20th in rushing
2- 2nd in lost fumbles
3- 28th in yards per game
4- 17th in points given up

With Cousins not playing well + the defense not as good in the red zone + not creating turnovers, that's where the struggles come from
the whole desperate team thing is more myth than reality
djm : 9/19/2016 12:22 pm : link
the Giants were desperate many times over the previous two seasons and it didn't help them. The better team wins not the most desperate.

Matching the intensity level of your opponent matters. Desperation means a higher level of intensity/focus. It's not the sole factor.
Crowder is not a playmaker

evaluating Washington soley based on the first game of the season and their performance against the Cowboys -- is really a dis-service.

Washington is a division rival, a fairly well-balanced team -- and will be a big challenge for the Giants next week -
Washington is
giantgiantfan : 9/19/2016 12:47 pm : link
the one team in the division that the Giants have had good success with over the years. Really the only team in the division that we've actually blown out in a while. They should be motivated to get a win, but they are also ready to fall apart with the locker room perhaps turning on Cousins. Though I assume we'll see an article about how the locker room is "united" around Cousins this week.

However, the offense has got to be feeling like they owe our defense. And they do. The owe the defense a a nice cushy two + score lead. This is the week our offense gets its shit together and causes Washington to implode.

2015
W 32–21
L 14–20

2014
W 45–14
W 24–13

2013
W 24–17
W 20–6

That's a good track record over 6 games against this franchise. We're to them like the Eagles have been to us.

To be fair, you don't need YAC when you catch it in the end zone, which Crowder did yesterday.
I thought

the first 6 games of the schedule were the toughest. Starting 3-0 and 2-0 in division would be just dandy.

Granted, for a little guy he isn't particularly explosive, and the stats are abysmal. He still might have more "sizzle" than he has shown so far. He makes a lot of his catches underneath coverage, from a QB who isn't particularly accurate, so his opportunities for RAC have been limited. He's not 2011 Victor Cruz, but I don't think he's Steve Smith (NYG) either. If Cousins hits him in space, he'll get yards.
The Giants

you're a tiresome doosh. I suppose they blew out 2 good teams rather than squeaked by 1 team with no QB and a putrid defense and another with a fine QB and some weapon but actually has a worse defense than Dallas? Take Greg's advice, find that function and share it with all of us so we can block your nonsense.
