To be impressed by Shepard, it's not too early to be impressed by Wentz. You can be impressed by their current play without declaring they will prove to be great players.
If Jordan Matthews would stop being stone hands out there, he'd have more deep ball completions too.
Of course progress is never linear and he'll have lots of bad games the next few years. But through the first couple of games at least, and watching Hard Knocks - seems the Rams should have gone Wentz #1 over the laid back dude.
Pretty good mobility too for a big guy and he took some big hits and popped back up. I think our defense will match up well though with their receivers and put pressure on the O-line.
was how he was calling out the defense at the LOS and he delivered a few strikes while taking a big hit to the chin. Sure, the offense is playing in a phone booth right now, but he's excelled at what they've given him to this point. Very impressive.

agree, and notwithstanding the (what I find defensive) comments about Dak, he has impressed me more than Wentz. Yes, DP has an excellent OL in front of him, and he's taken full advantage.

Also, re. Eagles' defense: what MAB said
RE: I saw this movie before when it starred Nick Foles
mentioned it on the Prescott thread, but his poise and ability to take a big hit while throwing accurately is something we need to prepare for. I didn't expect this kind of start from him, even though I liked him more than Goff.
has done well, but as others have noted, he's releasing the ball quickly, and most of his throws are at the first level. Many are WR screens, hitches, quick outs, and slants. On a number of plays, it looked like he was just looking at half the field, and making one or two reads. But he has composure, reads defenses well, and has made a few nice deep throws, albeit against the Browns. He's certainly more advanced than most rookie QBs. Prescott as well.
has a good head on his shoulders and he can make all the throws. But he plays very recklessly which will result in him getting hurt. And they really aren't asking him to do too much yet. .
He's faced two atrocious defenses and has barely attempted a pass longer than 10 yards.
Come on, give credit where credit is due. The kid took a licking last night and bounced right up. Those two passes he completed with a defender bearing down on and subsequently crushing him were very very nice. He also has shown good touch on his passes. Nobody is putting him in canton yet, just saying he has been impressive early on. I mean hell, compare his first two starts to Eli's... I must say the hit he took on the sideline last night reminded me very much of the hit Eli took in his first game against philly.
Do I have to retype Dave Brown's first three starts again?
The kid is the #2 pick in the draft. Did you expect him to suck? Sure, we can hope for Ryan Leaf. But the QBs taken at #2 since Leaf have been Donovan McNabb, Robert Griffin III and Marcus Mariota. These are seriously talented football players. I will say, though, that if Wentz doesn't protect himself better than he did on Monday, he's more likely to end up like Griffin than McNabb.
I really like what I've seen from him. He's making reads at the LOS, he's making accurate throws, and he runs pretty well. He also threw a few strikes downfield wihile on the run that could have resulted in huge plays if Algholor could win the one-on-ones and hold onto the ball.
It doesn't mean that he will definitely be great or that he won't regress when better defenses attack him, but I think he's playing as well as anyone could want from a rookie quarterback thus far.
His biggest flaw thus far has been the way he exposed himself to big hits, though.

Thats a good take.
So far I think he has done as well as the Eagles could have hoped
Physical tools are obvious. The small school QB looks like a veteran right now even without a lot of preseason work. That's really impressive.
They started the game with no huddle and spread it out and he looked like a vet. Most of the throws are short but he made some nice long throws that were dropped and he did it last week vs CLE. Throwing down the field is not an issue for him. He's got a live arm.
Very early but looks like DAL and PHi have their QBs for a while.
...it's nice to see Eli Manning finally getting credit for playing every Sunday. Maybe it comes across as faint praise, but it really shouldn't. Where NFL QBs are concerned, Woody Allen's maxim applies: 80% of life/success is showing up.
I personally like that version better than "A quarterback's most important ability is AVAILability." But then, Woody Allen is among the most brilliant humorists of his generation (albeit a twisted one). Daryl Johnston used his head as a battering ram for ten years. Comparing their phrase-turning talents seems a bit unfair.
As for Wentz, he looks good out there....the short passes are to minimize mistakes...has a good arm.....just a matter of time before he gets his timing down with the receivers, and plays a little long ball....
The NFC East, is looking stronger each week....
Of course the competition the Eagles have faced, helps....
Two games is too small a sample, even for the Giants.....by mid season we will know who the pretenders to the crown are...
One thing I noticed in last night's game in the first half (didn't watch the 2nd half) was he took two big hits. I'm not sure if he got hit again in the 2nd half. If he continues to take shots like that, he won't make it through a 16 game season.
His first few years he looked outstanding. Some guys grow. Some don't.
Wentz, after 2 games, is impressive. People saying it was against this defense or he avg 6 YPA? That doesn't mean the way he handled himself, moved around, and threw a football on an NFL field wasn't impressive. It Mathews catches the ball his YPA is good. Last week he threw some nice deep balls.
He looks like a real player. No need to take it as any kind of knock on Eli but thats what many do here.
People are funny. Apparently we are only allowed to be impressed with Giants players.
Who the hell knows what kind of career either of these rookie QB's will have but through 2 games each they both have looked good. Not sure how how anyone argue with that.
They may not have been asked to do too much, but both have looked in control of the offense, accurate, agile and calm.
As a Giants fan, I would have preferred they both looked like doe-eyed, pants pissing rookies.
The game thread does nothing but rip Wentz and Gruden for being impressed with him.
The guy had an undeniable command of what to do out there. And he has the tools to deliver the ball.
He sure as hell did not play like a small school rookie. Last season he's playing in North Dakota but he played like a 10 year vet on Monday night...on the road...in game 2 of his career. Damn that sucks for Giants fans.

A message board isn't for you, chill out. We are talking about how he looks after 2 games, not putting him in the hall of fame. Is anyone allowed to talk about the QB of a rival team, or do we have to wait until season 3?
2. Didn't really seem like he looked past his first target. Now that may be because the Bears didn't cover anyone but it's something to look out for this week against the Steelers.
Dak Prescott too.

Let's revisit in 3 years.
He needs to learn to slide though, or he is going to get himself killed.
Correct...ask me next week about Wentz and the Eagles defense.
And MAB's right - what's surprising about the Eagles is how good their defense looks.
agree, and notwithstanding the (what I find defensive) comments about Dak, he has impressed me more than Wentz. Yes, DP has an excellent OL in front of him, and he's taken full advantage.

Gary, a glitch?

As for the Eagles D - I think we all kind of expected it when they signed Schwartz to be their DC, no?
Thats a good take.

But I still remember the days when there were posters here talking about how great he was too.

Only negatives I saw were:
1. Takes ridiculous hits for no reason.
2. Didn't really seem like he looked past his first target. Now that may be because the Bears didn't cover anyone but it's something to look out for this week against the Steelers.
