New Coach is really making this is a different team

giantfan2000 : 9/21/2016 10:37 am
This season has been odd and I haven't been able to place my finger on it until today

Coughlin was our HC for 12 years . There were certain patterns with TC lead teams that happen over and over again thru out his tenure.

One of the big patterns was if it was an important game early in the season
The Giants would lay an egg .

This week is great example - Giants off to great start. They are playing a division game at home against an opponent that is on the ropes. A victory here would be huge.

If TC was coaching still I would have a huge amount of fear going into this game. Somehow every time there was a big home game early in the season , TC's Giants would come out flat , get embarrassed at home and lose in a mystifying way.

So far McAdoo's Giants are well coached and well prepared . He is making smart decisions in coaching and game management.

Obviously his team could do that same thing but I have this feeling Giants are going to come out to play on Sunday.

How many times
Old Dirty Beckham : 9/21/2016 10:38 am : link
did Coughlins teams start 6-2? I dont think they really layed eggs early in the season. Can you provide an example?

Usually they would swoon in the middle of the season.
Sometimes it is just time for a change
PatersonPlank : 9/21/2016 10:40 am : link
Coughlin is a great coach, and will do well somewhere else again, but after 12 years things can get stale. Players tune things out, habits get ingrained, etc. A shake up is good once and a while. People should not be afraid of change.
Not to take anything away from McAdoo
Jay on the Island : 9/21/2016 10:43 am : link
he has been great thus far in my opinion. However it is unfair to compare McAdoo and Coughlin. Look at all the talent the Giants have brought in this offseason compared to what they were parading out there the previous two years not to mention the dramatic difference in the number of injuries.
I see alot of Coughlin in him
AnnapolisMike : 9/21/2016 10:47 am : link
But I agree it is completely unfair to be derogatory about TC. The moves the Giants made in the offseason are a major factor in the improvement of the defense.
You can't make this shit up
AP in Halfmoon : 9/21/2016 10:47 am : link
Oh wait, you can!
Soooooo

After two weeks with a new coach we can compare his work to 12 years?
Hmm..

Can we get a couple of examples? I saw them shit the bed in Atlanta and Baltimore in late season games. Saw them come up small midway through the year in games that could put them in a playoff position. But I'm not sure where they got embarrassed at home early on.

But each person sees what they want I guess??
the last time the giants
Les in TO : 9/21/2016 10:58 am : link
started 2-0 was 2009, and before than 2005. let's hope this season is more like the latter than the former.

so far the giants won two close games against opponents they lost to last year in close games, so that is a positive trend. the giants have had too many turnovers and drops for my liking so far, hopefully they do a better job of securing the ball this week.
Somewhere along the way here
mfsd : 9/21/2016 11:03 am : link
The Giants are going to lose a bad one. Then we will see how our new coach and the team responds. Good start, but it's too early to know for sure yet

New Coach, Open your eyes !
siena16 : 9/21/2016 11:06 am : link
It's the players on Defense that are making the difference. TC had the worst defense in the history of the franchise last year and almost beat Carolina and New England. Wake up, It's about talented players, you think OV is better than Robert Ayers?
Honestly, both of those games
BurlyMan : 9/21/2016 11:07 am : link
could have gone either way. Giants have to improve if they want to win on the road in prime time games vs. Minnesota and Green Bay. They can make some big strides in that direction by stomping on an inferior opponent and ruining DC's season.
Last year 0-2 lost by a totalof 4 points
xman : 9/21/2016 11:16 am : link
this year 2-0 won by a total of 4 points. Sleep better this year
Coughlin was a superb HOF coach
Stu11 : 9/21/2016 11:22 am : link
there were 2 areas I feel we can improve on greatly from his tenure:
1. getting out of the gate the first few weeks. We always seemed no ready to start the season the first few weeks before going on a win streak.
2. Protect home field. Even in the championship years we were astonishingly bad at home. Sure we made up for it on the road, but you can't count on that year in year out.

So far the very early returns are positive, but there is a long long way to go.
This has nothing to do with Coughlin
Mike in Long Beach : 9/21/2016 11:22 am : link
and everything to do with 200 million dollars of talent imported in.

2012 week4 2 -1 going into Philly
we come out flat and lose a close game this game ended up costing us a playoff spot .

I remember this one because Eli threw an INT in end zone to DRC

2014 week 6 3-2 - we had a 3 game win streak going into Philly
we were and we got embarrassed 27 -0 our season was never the same after

How does going into Philly relate to this ridiculous crap from the OP?

Start HOT. 5-1, 6-2.

Team Top-5 Poll Sweetheart.

Midseason unpredictability.
- Lose to shitty teams
- Beat good teams

Late Season CRASH.
Only ONE Coughlin team finished last 6 better than 3-3. 2008.

Loved Tom, but the teams weren't mentally as consistent and confident as we would have liked.
I'm happy with 2-0 and have, with sadness, moved
Big Blue '56 : 9/21/2016 11:48 am : link
on from TC..Remember when Josh McDaniel started out 6-0 with Denver his rookie HC-ing year? Or forget JM, how about Dan Quinn with the Falcons last year starting out 6-0 and finishing 8-8?

And both..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/21/2016 11:49 am : link
that Denver team and the ATL team missed the playoffs.
This...

Last year 0-2 lost by a total of 4 points
xman : 11:16 am
this year 2-0 won by a total of 4 points.

With much better defensive talent to work with.

So let's calm down with sending McAdoo to the HoF just yet.
Too early to say the coach has made a difference
GeofromNJ : 9/21/2016 12:06 pm : link
If Coughlin had this defense and Sterling Shepard, the Giants would be 2-0. Thus far, the big difference between this year and last in the number of injuries. Whether the S&C coach is responsible (and by extension, McAdoo for selecting him) or it's just dumb luck, it's a welcome change.
I like BM

so far, but he has coached two regular season games. Let's see where things stand years down the line. We will be extremely fortunate if he ends up having as much overall success as Coughlin did.
Slow down, Red Ryder.

About the only things we can say about McAdoo after two regular season games is that he likes baggy clothes and sunglasses.
For the life of me, I just don't get this desire to smack

A coach who gave us the two most thrilling SB runs in our franchise's history.

We have a new coach with a bunch more talent then what this team has had for the last 5 years. We are 2-0 and things are looking good. Lets also not forget that our last coach is a HoF coach who brought us some great times, and leave it at that.

shabu: I think the last part of your statement is the key.

Emphasis added--yes, it is a key, and may be directly related to the change in S&C Coach: TC stuck with Palmieri through thick and thin even though the evidence suggested his regimens were not working. Too early to tell if correlation or causation, something to keep an eye on.

Ha! I think it's kind of silly, but I thought that "the green zone" was silly, too.

For me, the biggest difference between Coughlin and McAdoo is that Coughlin looked like he should've been commanding a Panzer Division in the Ardennes, circa 1944, and McAdoo looks like an aging porn star.

Agree with OP
trueblueinpw : 9/21/2016 1:03 pm : link
Not sure why everyone is dumping on OP. I think the OP's point is that there were a number of big games in the regular season where TC's Giants can out flat.

Big Blue can really put a hole in the season of the Washington team with this early season home division game. I think the OP is wondering if BMs Giants will come out and play with fire in the belly or if they're going to come out flat.
OP is right re: pattern with Coughlin
exiled : 9/21/2016 1:06 pm : link
It's a little early to be comparing B Mac to TC (actually, I have no interest in doing that anyway), but that pattern year after year of an explosive 6-2 record to start the season followed by an awful second-half slump was a killer. Of course, that was before the bottom fell out of the team completely, and the whole damn season was a killer.

I am hoping to see that pattern change this year.
9 years in a row
oldog : 9/21/2016 2:21 pm : link
TC had enough TALENT to have a winning season during the first half of the year, often 6-2, once 7-1. Twice in that span he led team to SB. 2007, he showed remarkable leadership, and great coaching. In 2011, he repeated, with Eli and an amazing offense. So he had 11 tries, two successes and overall 9 failures. He did not walk on water, but two SBs is really pretty good. There was a tendency to have strong teams, with a developing franchise QB collapse, whether due to injury, or sometimes, like the memorable Philly game at the Meadowlands, simple brainless mismanagement. In those situations, TC, and most of BBI, blamed the players. In the latter three years, it was argued here that TC was just not given the talent. In the years prior to those last three years, our drafting and free agency work had been abysmal, but TC was treated as if he showed up at the stadium, and asked, who am I getting this year Jerry. In reality, TC either owned, or should have had a real share in who got signed and drafted. How do you shore up weak spots, if your coach does not evaluate the talent, and indicate where help is required, and what sort of help will meet needs. Lately, Reese has drafted astutely, this year, our top three are all starters. Under TC, except for his most successful year, 2007, that simply did not happen. So, to sum up, a sometimes inspirational, sometimes brilliant coach, with apparent flaws, who at times did not appear to work effectively with team management, seemed to have run out of steam. Its a common enough story. Even Belichik is not perfect, and it does help to be lucky.
Biggest difference so far:
81_Great_Dane : 9/21/2016 4:50 pm : link
Fewer injuries, especially to key players.

I believe the perennial injury problems with the Giants over Coughlin's tenure did go back to something he and his staff were doing -- but I don't know what. And I believe something that was changed this off-season is accounting for the improvement -- but I don't know what that is, either.
It's only 2 freakin' games!
oldutican : 9/21/2016 4:58 pm : link
I was not a Coughlin fan, but it's ridiculous to draw conclusions after 2 games won by a total of 4 points.
One conclusion only,

Giants did not have enough to refuse Coughlan's offered resignation and press on with him.
