NFT: Mets 9/22 Matz scratched from Friday start

Metnut : 9/22/2016 4:10 pm
Matz is being scratched from tomorrow's start with continued shoulder discomfort. It would be comical at this point if it wasn't sad.

Of COURSE he had a setback
speedywheels : 9/22/2016 4:25 pm : link
No Harvey, deGrom, Matz or Wheeler.

Thor is the only one still standing, and even he has bone spurs...

SMH...
Amazing that they lost so many big arms this season and still in it

What a surprise.. I bet no one saw this coming!

The setback is just around the corner. Book it.

If you haven't picked up on it by now, when a Mets player is injured, there's about a 95% chance they will NOT return when the team says they will and they'll have a setback that either shelves them for much longer or ends their season. It literally almost never, ever fails and it's sad how predictable it is.

Did anyone honestly think Matz was going to pitch tomorrow? I never even considered it as a possibility.

I'm sure some of these injuries are not preventable and shit happens but I feel very confident in saying that the medical staff here is an issue. This is happening FAR too often for me to believe anything else.
I'm also getting more and more
steve in ky : 9/22/2016 4:35 pm : link
convinced that when organizations baby these million dollar arms from early on and throughout their careers there is something missing in the process of building up the arm strength and they end up more susceptible to injury.

I certainly understand them wanting to protect their investment in these types of pitchers but I think it is backfiring in the long run.

Sadly, I think 95% is a bit low, arc.
LOL..

You're probably right.
Just a cursed year, at this point it's impressive they got this far
Eric on Li : 9/22/2016 4:42 pm : link
The entire rotation that was healthy pretty much all last year developed surgical conditions, except Bartolo of course. And on top of that Wheeler's return was completely shut down.
I had higher hopes for the postseason
Chris684 : 9/22/2016 4:42 pm : link
a couple of weeks ago when Matz and deGrom were still possibilities. Now that it looks like BOTH are shelved, I see little hope beyond the one game, which, would still be a great thing as a fan just sucks to think that in all likelihood we really can't win a postseason series.

Also, after last night I'm not convinced these last 10 games are going to go so well. Last night was as bad a regular season loss as any I can remember, up there with Glavine in 07.
Yea, the outlook
Metnut : 9/22/2016 5:08 pm : link
for the playoffs if they make it doesn't look great, but I'm not even thinking (too much) about it anyway right now.

It's a 10 game race, 3 teams for 2 spots. Mets have 7 games vs the Phillies who they are still better than. I'd really love to see them pull this off and at least get to the WC game as I think it'll give the organization and the fanbase a much more positive outlook heading into the offseason.
The good thing is all the replacements have been pitching real well
steve in ky : 9/22/2016 5:11 pm : link
If they continue to get solid pitching and timely hitting with their usual HR's they can beat anyone for a series.

The only silver lining from all these pitching injuries
speedywheels : 9/22/2016 5:23 pm : link
is that Gsellman and Lugo seem legit. Small sample size, of course. But so far, so good...
Shut Matz down for the season

Lets go Lugo!
spike : 9/22/2016 8:26 pm : link
EVERY GAME is a MUST WIN now.

just 10 to go.
The funny thing is last year we
ZGiants98 : 9/22/2016 8:29 pm : link
had injuries early but guys actually DID come back. Everything came together last year in August and we were pretty close to full strength coming down the stretch.

It wasn't that long ago we thought a similar thing could happen this year. Almost nothing has gone right though. Everyone has had setbacks or had to be shut down for the year. It's not even just the rotation. Duda is in the starting lineup the day after he gets back and then we never see him again? What are the odds he felt something in his back and we just haven't heard about it? Walker was expected to be back to play through his back issue? Nope. Ect. Ect.
that should be Lugo's last inning

Trading for Matt Kemp has been an absolute steal for the Braves. I believe they were the worst offense in baseball prior to his arrival and since Kemp has been a Brave I believe they are the 2nd best offense over that period.
Come on TJ

They are. I said it the other day. I think they have the second best offense since the all-star break or something like that. Inciarte coming back and Swanson have also obviously helped as well.
Now the book on TJ
spike : 9/22/2016 8:52 pm : link
is that he cant hit changeups.... Dont they throw those in PCL?

Maybe they just throw too hard. Pitching is about movement and location. These guys love to crank it up by torquing that mid-section.

Absolutely plus Freeman has been having the best season of his career and finally has some protection. Inciarte has surprised me. I wanted the Braves to trade him after they acquired him because I thought his value was never going to be higher and I wasn't sold on him. I was clearly wrong and he has been on a tear since he got off the DL.

After the last two terrible losses to the Braves, I had a feeling Mets were going into a tailspin.
Injuries explain why the Mets are in this position
Vanzetti : 9/22/2016 10:01 pm : link
But they are not the reason they are perhaps about to lose their 4th in a row to last place teams

These last 4 games are the textbook definition of choking.
Need more offense
spike : 9/22/2016 10:03 pm : link
Gotta play Conforto and even Nimmo.

The Bruce experiment is over.0
I don't view them as choking
steve in ky : 9/22/2016 10:03 pm : link
They have won some big games against tough teams when their backs were to the wall.

I think once they took the top WC spot and had they easy part of their schedual they took it for granted they would win and it has cost them.
What's better for this franchise?
ZGiants98 : 9/22/2016 10:05 pm : link
Mets miss the playoffs and Terry gets fired. Mets make the playoffs without Wright, Duda, Walker, Lagares, Harvey, deGrom, Matz, and Wheeler and Terry stays?

I think Collins is an extremely poor strategist and I would love to see him gone. But making the playoffs is more important.

September baseball also puts more emphasis on the manager and the moves he makes or doesn't make because there are so many available players.

First five months of the season, there were not many games you could point to where bad managing by Terry determined or strongly influenced the income. But the last 3 weeks have seen a bunch of games like that.
another big pinch hit by Nimmo
Vanzetti : 9/22/2016 10:35 pm : link
He may not turn out to be a great player but I like this kid
I don't expect them to win
