Football Outsiders: Norman

nms24 : 9/23/2016 10:08 am
Saw this posted on BBI during free agency, but thought it deserved its own thread this week

Quote:
Odell Beckham's stat line and antics during the game overshadowed that he eviscerated Norman in one-on-one situations. Beckham dropped a 50-plus-yard touchdown on their very first qualifying snap of the game; he dropped an out route soon after before Eli Manning missed him down the seam when he was wide open for another potential long touchdown. For the game as a whole, Beckham beat Norman nine of 10 times. It was one of, if not the most lopsided matchup since this analysis method was created.

But we've seen several different sites/analysts say the same thing about that matchup.

If Odell keeps his composure, he could have the monster game vs. Norman that he should've had last year.
Odell has not had a monser game yet this year

Against lesser CBs. Let's see how this plays out.
Don't let...

Fekker see that!
Beckham against ANY cornerback is a matchup Eli will take...
Big Blue Blogger : 9/23/2016 11:01 am : link
... and it's a matchup Beckham is likely to win. Beckham against a good corner with safety help is a different story, though Beckham wins his share of those too.

It's no knock on Norman that he can't cover Odell Beckham one-on-one with consistent success. Nobody can. It speaks highly of Norman that he would even be asked to cover Beckham one-on-one.

What does this even mean? How is that a counter to OBJ wooping his ass last year?
There was never a doubt

OBJ dominated the matchup. The only thing that slowed OBJ last year was OBJ.
Saddest words of tongue or pen...

I think OBJ will dominate Norman again BUT

Norman did get into his head last time with the help of a baseball bat wielding buddy. Example: the drops.

Norman knows how much he can do and say on the field so if I was to guess who is more likely to draw a personal foul or unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, it still could be OBJ.

Norman's meltdown may come after the game when he accuses the rest of the defense of not helping him out.
I hope Cruz and Shepard run

wild all afternoon and OJB ends up with 2-3 receptions. I just want the Giants to win the game and they will do that by taking advantage of good matchups.

You should have seen how deep those safeties on the saints were playing last week especially shadowed to his side. They were giving up the run entirely which is scary that we couldn't run. But beckham will get his. I did see at the game when they lined up with no help late - I knew they were going deep to him there but he dropped it. He will have a monster game soon.

In fairness, he had a couple drops last week that make it a monster game. He's beating him man, he just needs to finish.
If OBJ keeps his head,
Randy in CT : 9/23/2016 1:43 pm : link
and maybe even annoys Norman, we might get some penalties against Wash aside from OBJ (hopefully) having his way with him.

I do'nt think a baseball bat made him drop a pass. The guy didn't keep his composure and had a drop, but it was the same type of drop as he had last week, so I don't think "getting into his head" has anything to do with it. He needs to refine his game a bit in that area, not really worried about it.

But what was his PFF rating?

Norman is the best corner in the league. He already leads the league in passes defended. And a grading system used by all nfl teams has him as #1.

The video is of Norman sacking Russell Wilson on a delayed corner blitz. Pretty epic play.

Maybe one blitz on Eli unless they thought Wilson was susceptible to it (and he was).
