NFT: To Meat Eaters

Big Al : 9/24/2016 2:11 pm
About a week or two ago I inadvertently found myself on a Facebook thread comprised mostly by Vegans (by responding to a post that appeared on my page). I made about 5 posts responding to stuff said to me. Suddenly a new post showed up today. Thought it might be an important message to you meate eaters.

"so SAD THAT THE ANIMALS DO NOT GET A CHOICE...SO MUCH FOR YOUR CHOICE...you have the audacity to think you have the right to end an animals life just to stuff it down your throat...wow you think hihgly of yourself".

I have a related question: If consuming animal protein was a necessary part of the evolutionary journey from Lucy and her cousins to homo sapiens, where along that journey did we lose the right to consume animal protein?

Based on this year's election, I think we're all unevolving.

I blame veganism.

Want to know why I eat meat?

When I'm hungover, I don't crave a salad. I want a burger.

When I am drinking a nice red wine, I don't want cauliflower. I want a steak.

Good Super Bowl food is not veggie lasagna. It's smoked brisket and something with bacon.

It's just that simple.
I knew I was cooking steak for dinner tonight and I didn't want to
Del Shofner : 9/24/2016 11:32 pm : link
read this thread until that was in the rear view mirror.

Having read the thread, lol, wouldn't do anything differently. Look - all in moderation - I eat red meat maybe three times a month, and I try to eat fruit and veggies as much as possible. I'm big on seafood of every type.

But what I really like is bacon ... not just bacon but smoked meats of every variety, I really like good ham too. I mean ... God wouldn't have created smoke if God didn't intend smoked meats, right?

Sure you don't need to eat meat at every meal, but studies have show that vegans and vegetarians lack many nutrients and vitamins. Most are B12 deficient, along with vitamins A and D. Supplementing alone may not help.

If God wanted us to eat meat, he wouldn't have given us supplements.
While I mostly agree with the ''natural-ness'' argument
Overseer : 9/25/2016 11:08 am : link
wrt consuming meat, the scale to which we do it is rather unsettling when one considers what it requires, i.e. industrial factory farming which routinely churns out sick, filthy, miserable animals pumped full of antibiotics (facilitating "superbugs") and hormones. As more and more of the world escapes poverty and their taste for/ability to purchase meat increases, I'm not sure it's sustainable....lab grown meat is intriguing. It's valuable to consider and ponder the consequences (positive & negative) of our food choices.

Sometimes I also consider whether there should be a "line" for which animals we eat. Pigs, while obviously delicious, are really really smart animals. While culturally we don't "value" them as if we're Hindus revering cows, it's noteworthy for instance that some would take issue with Chinese eating dogs.

didn't climb to the top of the food chain by eating lettuce and grass!

I have no problem with vegans. But like anyone with some sort of activist agenda and want to force their opinions on others to try and change them to their way of thinking, simply pisses me off. Savor your lettuce as you eat it, but leave those who love a good rare steak or a good Virginia ham to enjoy their food in peace.

to be food. Even McDonalds is going with anti-biotic free meat. You can make a conscious effort to buy meat that has a good humane rating.

Giantgator, I don't know where you are getting those ideas from, but they are mostly wrong. If humans didn't have the proper digestive system for meat, why have we been eating it for over 2 million years? Our digestive tracks ARE very different from gorillas, who don't eat meat. More similar to chimps that do eat meat. No one is saying that our diet has to be all meat, but there is nothing to indicate that meat is unhealthy or that we were not meant to eat meat. We are omnivores.

...and certainly believe you should do what you feel is right, but let's not pretend there are not larger scale consequences because of those decisions. The environmental damage caused by meat production will be felt by all, as well as the higher costs of insurance due to the health effects of that type of diet. Those individual decisions have ramifications that impact not only the rest of your current citizens, but generations to come. As someone else mentioned, the future will no doubt require a mostly meat-free diet, so enjoy it while you can I suppose. Just don't delude yourself that others are not being negatively impacted by your choices.
The post is wrong on several levels....
grizz299 : 9/26/2016 7:52 am : link

The large brain of the human would never have developed if he was a vegetarian only. Now many anthropologists think the large brain could not have developed until AFTER fire.
The brain takes nutrients. In effect, we need to eat more than animals of the same size to keep the brain supplied. WE could not have supported the brain with veggies, we - it now theorized - could not have supported the brain without cooking the meat. The alternative would have been to spend more time eating.
The dinosour developed his huge size probably so he could support a huge stomach ...a stomach that was needed to hold the poorer quality leaves that had to be held and fermented.
And grazers eat constantly, something that would also have been inimical with developing civilization.
Fire not only gave us more nutritional food and consequentally a bigger brain, it gave us security, warmth and time to think.

Our eldest daughter gave up red meat for exactly this reason. She's not an animal rights activist, just a commited environmentalist. As a family, we've followed her lead and drastically curtailed our consumption. One thing we appreciate about her position is that she doesn't lecture or grab the moral high ground. She just shares information and respects everybody's right to do with it as they choose. Most people have no idea how our eating habits affect the planet.

We don't see much reason to give up meat completely. Most of the benefit can be achieved through restraint, without prohibitions or total abstinence. And we appreciate the occasional indulgence much more than a steady diet of meat, though a big steak can pose a digestive challenge when your system isn't accustomed to it.

here's some info on how humans aren't designed to eat meat.

Meat-eaters:

• have claws
• have no skin pores and perspire through the tongue
• have sharp front teeth for tearing with no flat molar teeth for grinding
• have an intestinal tract that is only 3 times their body length so that rapidly decaying meat can pass through quickly
• have strong hydrochloric acid in their stomach to digest meat
• have salivary glands in their mouth not needed to pre-digest grains and fruits, and have acid saliva with no enzyme ptyalin to pre-digest grains.

Does that sound like us? If humans were truly meant to eat meat, then we would eat all of our meat raw and bloody. Does the sight of road kill get your stomach juices going?

Cooking our meat and seasoning it with salt, ketchup, mayo, mustard or tabasco sauce disguise the awful taste of flesh. This is the only way we as humans would eat meat because we refuse to eat it raw and bloody like real carnivores.

With all due respect, I'm not sure I can take anything you say seriously anymore as every time I see your handle, I will think back on this post.
