Former Giant Andre Williams waived by the Chargers

Chargers waived RB Andre Williams, team announced. Move created room for practice-squad promotion of TE Asante Cleveland.
So they lose Woodhead....
EricJ : 9/24/2016 4:13 pm : link
and Williams still cannot make this team? Holy shit.. what the hell?
Makes sense
DieHard : 9/24/2016 4:22 pm : link
Gates is gimpy at TE so they need extra help there. Plus Williams was never going to replace Woodhead as a pass-catching RB.

Tries hard but he lacks vision and fluidity. He may get another opportunity but likely his last in the nfl
He put up insane numbers in college
gogiants : 9/24/2016 4:27 pm : link
Had 2,177 yds rushing and 18 TDs his senior year. He was 1st in rushing yards and won the Doak award and was Unanimous All American. I hope he finds a team that can utilize his talents.
Somebody
AcidTest : 9/24/2016 4:28 pm : link
will give him another chance, as they should. Being cut by the Chargers after he'd only been with them a few weeks doesn't mean much.

should grab him

Is there a team that can utilize the talent for running right into the defensive line?
Wasn't sure why they signed him
Beer Man : 9/24/2016 4:59 pm : link
They already had three backs they were happy with. The Lions wanted to sign him, maybe they will now

You may be right. He needs a team with an OL that can let him get some mo into a MLB. 'Boys would be good for EE relief and late 3rd and 4thQtr ball possession(if he can wrap 2 arms around the ball).

AND he won the the Heisman Trophy!!

Oh wait, were you not talking about Ron Dayne?
I'd take him back ....

If Jennings is going to struggle with his hand, it would be nice to have a sledge hammer around.
I thought
PaulN : 9/24/2016 6:23 pm : link
Williams looked good, but it was a numbers game here, plus he is a poor receiver, and that killed his chances here.
I personally don't care if he can't catch ....
Manny in CA : 9/24/2016 6:35 pm : link

The Common Cold as long as he can run & block.
I really liked the pick...
sb from NYT Forum : 9/24/2016 6:39 pm : link
...but man does he suck. Don't want him back even if Jennings' hand is serious.

That requires not running into the backs of your o-line first, something Williams wasn't very good at

You're right, my bad. ;-)
He's a person, guys.

Change of scenes may sound nice but he may not have meshed with the other players or got along with coaches. Sucks being on the outside looking in.

Randy, why are we not allowed to negatively discuss a football player on a football message board?

Grow up. Hopefully he doesn't go on BBI and get his feelings hurt?
Williams supposedly...
manh george : 9/24/2016 7:51 pm : link
completely re-made his physique over the summer, going from a 36 waist to a 32.

Apparently, that didn't add much to his quickness, agility or fluidity.
He sure got a hell of a lot press this summer how he had lost weight
Jimmy Googs : 9/24/2016 7:54 pm : link
had a better burst and was more comfortable catching passes.

But in the end, nobody seems to have any interest him...
Danny, you can make negative comments...
manh george : 9/24/2016 7:54 pm : link
and Randy can call out people who resort to ridiculous superlatives.

Personally, the worst running pack I ever saw....didn't make the team.
.
Danny Kanell : 9/24/2016 8:01 pm : link
How many ridiculous negative posts we made before his "He's a person guys" comment?

Maybe 1? And it wasn't even bad. But Randy to the rescue!

I dont recall anyone better who was cut for him.

I think he got too many carries last year. He seems to regress from his rookie season.
Ron Dayne
Glover : 9/24/2016 8:20 pm : link
had over 700 yards his rookie season and he was responsible for Tiki becoming an elite RB. Andre Williams wishes he could stick around on the Giants bench for 5 years like Dayne did.
Ron Dayne sucked
gtt350 : 9/24/2016 9:23 pm : link
couldn't catch, couldn't block, sound familiar
I dont know
XBRONX : 9/24/2016 9:41 pm : link
how getting in better shape helps your poor vision and patience.
He literally never even showed flashes of being a good RB here.
Mike in Long Beach : 9/24/2016 9:53 pm : link
2.9 YPC is mind-numbingly bad. Having said that, he always seemed like a very nice and thoughtful person when I heard him interviewed, so I do hope he discovers whatever made him successful at BC and finds another gig in the NFL.
Never showed flashes huh?

Be serious ....
He can't catch a cold either ...
as far as who we cut that was any better its more like
who have we drafted that was any better ??
He is not a good RB sure he trucked a couple of safeties
when he had a hole as wide as the grand canyon ..
Activate Rainey at least he has proven to be able to
make big plays .. As long as he secures the ball he is
everything that Williams will never be ...
They should have grabbed Forsett when the Ravens
released him ..

Good grief the Giants run blocking sucks. What the hell was Newhouse even doing?? On some of those runs Williams was doing most of the work himself. SMH.
I'm sure he's a wonderful dude
mattnyg05 : 9/25/2016 6:31 am : link
But I wonder, last year, in a season where we seemed to take pride in blowing winnable games by the slimmest of margins, how we would have fared if we didn't have the "it's Andres turn!" 2-3-4 series' per game. He killed drives in 2015 worse than any aspect of your team. We all saw how effective Jennings was towards the end of the year with more carries.

And yes most of that paragraph is a run on sentence.
And I also understand
mattnyg05 : 9/25/2016 6:34 am : link
That our run blocking this year is horrendous. But while Andre Williams definitely passed the physical eye test, you just knew that he was not a good runner (lacked instinct) by watching him last season. He was real bad.

I don't think it's a stretch to say we may have won 3 or 4 of those close games had the staff not forced Williams in to the rotation.
AW's detractors often point to the 2.9 YPC in 2015.
Big Blue Blogger : 9/25/2016 7:58 am : link
That's fair enough, but here's a counter-example to keep in mind. In 2012, Rashad Jennings got his big opportunity in Jacksonville, with Maurice Jones-Drew sidelined. His per-carry average that year? 2.8 yards. He was replaced by the immortal Jalen Parmele.

Not saying Williams was good, just that his awful stats in New York should be kept in context. The Giants have been a terrible running team for a long time. They were mostly terrible in 2011-2013, before Andre Williams arrived, and aside from a few flashes against Dallas, they look pretty bad post-Williams too.

As a pure ball-carrier, how big is the gap between Andre Williams and, say, Alfred Morris or LaGarrette Blount? I guess we'll never know, unless AW lands in Dallas or New England. Andre's fatal flaw, IMO, was his hands, not his lack of vision. There's a place in the NFL for a straight-ahead runner, but maybe not for one who also can't catch.

I never said he was a fucking pro bowler but this crap about how he never showed flashes of being even decent is fucking bullshit, especially when this guy was running behind some of the worst oline play I have ever seen.
I liked williams
Paulie Walnuts : 9/25/2016 12:47 pm : link
he just didnt fit the scheme

he'll be fine in a power offense with good OL

I'd take him back if we needed a back, knows the system and he can block the blitz
His rookie season he did run for 7 TDS and show ome
fredgbrown : 9/25/2016 1:00 pm : link
flashes. If you put him behind that 2008 Giant OL and he would have run for over 1000 and 10 tds.
