RIP. ESPN article said his start was pushed back from Sunday to accommodate Adam Connelly coming off the DL. Has to make you wonder if he would have been on a boat at 3 am if he was starting today and not Monday.

Probably not but you can't look at life's choices that way. Someone can just as easily avoid tragedy when changing ones schedual than encountering it.

Really respected him even though I hated it when he was slated to pitch against the Mets. Class pitcher, dominant pitcher, and what an unfathomable tragedy. What a horrible blow to the Marlins' organization and their fans, and of course to the Fernandez family. Just tragic. RIP.
Even though he was the best player, not just best pitcher on that team, just a sad day. As annoying as it was to watch him mow through the Mets' order, I actually enjoyed watching him pitch. His talent was just superlative. For baseball to lose a player like this, it is harkens back to Clemente. Generational talent. Eduardo Perez losing it on ESPN right now.
At least three people are reportedly dead after a boat crash off Miami Beach on Sunday morning.
Emergency workers are searching for more victims near Government Cut and South Pointe Park.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews responded to the crash of the 30-foot boat.
“They found a boat that was up against the jetties,” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Todd Garofalo told WSVN. “They did do an initial search and they found three victims — two on top of the water, one underneath the boat and they had unfortunately passed away.”
I, too, immediately thought of the spring training Olin/Crews/Ojeda accident in the early 90s. Very sorry to see a talent like his gone. Peace and healing to the Fernandez and Marlins families.
I've been a big fan of his since he came up. He really impressed me with his overpowering stuff but what I noticed was his swagger. He just carried himself with a ton of confidence but wasn't a real asshole about it like others. He had that whole Braves BS but I've always blamed that on McCann and Johnson for being whiny babies. He just had a cool vibe about him.
Seemed like a nice kid who worked his ass off to come back from injury and be arguably the best pitcher in baseball (#1 in fangraphs WAR + #1 in K/9 with a ridiculous 12.5 number).
If you were to ask me which starter do you want for the next 7 years, he would've been my answer. He had such a bright future.
The fact that he died on the water after his crazy journey from Cuba just makes this one feel more messed up. RIP to young kid who was taken from us way too soon.
During the summer, not a week goes by where we don't have a boat accident or a drowning. In the majority of cases, alcohol is involved. This year we had a boat with 4 experienced boaters flipped and they were killed. A few years ago, a drunk boater slammed into a boat filled with people and two children were killed. This family lives around the block from me, it's terrible.
Boating is driving. You cannot drink alcohol and drive a boat. And you probably shouldn't be in the water, especially at night, if you've been drinking. This is senseless and easy to avoid.
Woow! That picture looks like they could have been traveling moderately fast ... and if the accident took place in the AM the driver probably didn't see what was ahead of him?
He was a fan favorite and seemed to give back to the Miami community.
Judging by that picture to me it looks like the driver tried to take a short cut inside that last red marker. He should have been on the other side of that marker. RED on your RIGHT when RETURNING from ocean. (The most basic boat rule everyone should know) Looks like the front left side impacted first and launched the boat. Those rocks to the left of the boat may have been just underwater with a higher tide and never were seen. I wouldn't expect them to be wearing life jackets while just boat riding, who could ever expect this to happen. Just an awful situation all around.

Boat that size doesn't need to be in the channel - just not on the rocks.
That jetty is not underwater at high tide. The range of tide in Miami is only about 3 or 4 feet. But it would be hard to see with the background lights.

I saw pictures of the scene at night - he had the LEDs inside the cockpit on. That's a classic nighttime no-no, completely kills your night vision.
Combine speed (there's no way that thing wasn't moving at a good clip for it to get flipped over like that) with some operator inexperience and diminished night vision, and you have bad news.
A few have insinuated alcohol, but that isn't necessarily the case here. Too many people have been hurt or killed without alcohol involved to point any fingers here. The most likely culprit is speed, I can't count the number of times I've been out at night with the radar on and I've seen idiots coming at 30-40 MPH around areas with obstructions, either blindly trusting their instrumentation or the other boaters on the water.
RIP to him - seemed on all accounts to be a great guy, his Instagram had some great fishing pics, most with his family.

One of the greatest arms in the game.

Which says a lot about the player, if people are not fans of your team enjoy watching you pitch.

Monday's Marlins-Mets game will be quite an emotional experience for all.

Terrible tragic news ....
Thanks Steve ... powerful!
Sad ...
Puig did the same with a Dodgers Fernandez jersey and was in tears during his press conference.
Like Fernandez, both Cespedes and Puig are Cuban.
