Saying the Marlins are confirming. He's incredulous.
Wait.

Whaaaaattttt?

Marlins confirmed it a little while ago

They've canceled today's game vs. Atlanta. This is absolutely horrible.
That's horrible
bubba0825 : 9/25/2016 9:20 am : link
I was really looking forward to the Yankees trying to sign him
Unbelievably tragic
Stufftherun : 9/25/2016 9:27 am : link
Gary Cohen and Ron Darling were musing over the remaining Mets schedule and the fact that he was being moved to the Monday start against Bartolo. It's one of those games where you chalk it up as a loss, he was just that good.
That sucks

I was just reading that three bodies were found off the Florida Keys; may not be related.

RIP. ESPN article said his start was pushed back from Sunday to accommodate Adam Connelly coming off the DL. Has to make you wonder if he would have been on a boat at 3 am if he was starting today and not Monday.

Probably not but you can't look at life's choices that way. Someone can just as easily avoid tragedy when changing ones schedual than encountering it.

What a tragedy
allstarjim : 9/25/2016 9:45 am : link
Really respected him even though I hated it when he was slated to pitch against the Mets. Class pitcher, dominant pitcher, and what an unfathomable tragedy. What a horrible blow to the Marlins' organization and their fans, and of course to the Fernandez family. Just tragic. RIP.
Holy fuck
Mike in NY : 9/25/2016 9:46 am : link

allstarjim : 9/25/2016 9:54 am : link
Even though he was the best player, not just best pitcher on that team, just a sad day. As annoying as it was to watch him mow through the Mets' order, I actually enjoyed watching him pitch. His talent was just superlative. For baseball to lose a player like this, it is harkens back to Clemente. Generational talent. Eduardo Perez losing it on ESPN right now.
Here are some details.

I wonder if they were wearing PFD's?

At least three people are reportedly dead after a boat crash off Miami Beach on Sunday morning.

Emergency workers are searching for more victims near Government Cut and South Pointe Park.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews responded to the crash of the 30-foot boat.

“They found a boat that was up against the jetties,” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Todd Garofalo told WSVN. “They did do an initial search and they found three victims — two on top of the water, one underneath the boat and they had unfortunately passed away.”

I, too, immediately thought of the spring training Olin/Crews/Ojeda accident in the early 90s. Very sorry to see a talent like his gone. Peace and healing to the Fernandez and Marlins families.
Absolutely devastating
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 9/25/2016 10:29 am : link
I've been a big fan of his since he came up. He really impressed me with his overpowering stuff but what I noticed was his swagger. He just carried himself with a ton of confidence but wasn't a real asshole about it like others. He had that whole Braves BS but I've always blamed that on McCann and Johnson for being whiny babies. He just had a cool vibe about him.

Seemed like a nice kid who worked his ass off to come back from injury and be arguably the best pitcher in baseball (#1 in fangraphs WAR + #1 in K/9 with a ridiculous 12.5 number).

If you were to ask me which starter do you want for the next 7 years, he would've been my answer. He had such a bright future.

The fact that he died on the water after his crazy journey from Cuba just makes this one feel more messed up. RIP to young kid who was taken from us way too soon.
Awful news
pjcas18 : 9/25/2016 10:43 am : link
such great stuff, liked watching him pitch as much as I liked watching Pedro (as a non-Met).

Which says a lot about the player, if people are not fans of your team enjoy watching you pitch.
Devastating.
AcidTest : 9/25/2016 10:47 am : link
Prayers to him and the others who died, along with their families and friends. A terrible loss. RIP. God bless.
The big takeaway from the press conference so far
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 9/25/2016 10:49 am : link
is that the boat was going at a high rate of speed when hitting the rocks.
And no life vests

Awful
Jim in Fairfax : 9/25/2016 10:51 am : link
Going to guess alcohol was a factor. Driving a boat at high speed, near shore in the dark is not smart.
Sad news

During the summer, not a week goes by where we don't have a boat accident or a drowning. In the majority of cases, alcohol is involved. This year we had a boat with 4 experienced boaters flipped and they were killed. A few years ago, a drunk boater slammed into a boat filled with people and two children were killed. This family lives around the block from me, it's terrible.

Boating is driving. You cannot drink alcohol and drive a boat. And you probably shouldn't be in the water, especially at night, if you've been drinking. This is senseless and easy to avoid.

RIP to those who died.
Very saddening
