QB Eli Manning

Postgame vs. Washington, September 25, 2016

Q: What did you see on the last interception?

A: The guy made a good play. Shane had a little inside breaking route and the guy undercut it and I didn't think he'd be able to get all the way underneath on it. Bad decision by me. Should’ve gone onto my next progression. Guy made a good play and it was unfortunate.

Q: What did you see on the first interception?

A: They were all-out blitz and had it picked-up pretty good. Had Tye on a post route and just tried to give him a chance and the guy made a better play on the ball and again, poor throw right there. Could have gone into my other progressions and possibly had someone else who was open.

Q: On penalties and turnovers.

A: You can't have that. You can't have the turnovers; you can't have the penalties. Sometimes one can lead to the other with the penalties and put you in bad positions. Just the personal fouls, they were costly. When you're down at the two-yard line at one point, now you're backing up. We got to play smart. It throws you out of your rhythm. Makes the play calling harder and it slows down the game. We got them on the ropes a few times and all the sudden we're going backwards. We got to play smarter football. We can't afford to do that.

Q: How good did you feel in yourself?

A: As sloppy as it was at times, we still had a chance at the end. A good chance with plenty to go down there and get in field goal range. First down call right there with a 1:09. Unfortunately, had a bad play. Had opportunities earlier but they played well. They did some good things, they had a good plan. We did some good things early but we eventually had some plays that cost us and kept us from scoring more points.

Q: What was your level of confidence going into the last play?

A: It felt good. We needed a field goal, to get in field goal range, and we'd been moving the ball well. Most of the day, hit some good plays, getting completions, so it felt we were in good shape. Kind of got into a bad situation. Converted a third and 15 or 17, whatever it was. We had time. We were getting close to field goal range and with the timeout and time on the clock. So felt good about the situation, just didn't execute well enough and that was on me.

Q: Did you feel the need to say something to Odell Beckham Jr. when he seemed to be frustrated on the sideline?

A: Yeah, I was trying to figure out what was going on, why he was getting frustrated. He was getting catches, he was making plays and we just need everybody to stay calm. We don't need to get rattled, we don't need to get fired up. You can get excited, celebrate with your teammates but we just need to do a better job offensively, everybody, to stay calm and stay in our rhythm.

Q: On the divisional loss.

A: We look at it like, it's a division game. It's not about daylight, it's about, 'hey, we had a chance to win a division game and we didn't.' So we'll see them again. We have our focus on Minnesota, they're playing good football. Believe they're 3-0. Just try to go and see if we can get back on track and play better football.

Q: Do you feel like you guys lost your composure in the second half?

A: Whatever it is, obviously, when you get penalties and you get a player ejected, that's not good. We're not doing our job. We can't afford to do that. We can't afford to get out of our zone. When we're doing good things, when we're playing and we got an opportunity to extend the lead and I don't know what happened. I don't know the circumstances of the ejection, didn't see the play or exactly how it occurred. Just too many self-inflicted mistakes that put us in bad positions.

Q: With the ejection, what kind of adjustment is there?

A: I thought Brett did a good job popping right in, right there. It's not easy. You don't have a whole lot of time to go get snaps. Usually, you try to get a few snaps with the center. He popped right in, he's done a good job and handled the situation well.

Q: On the two interceptions.

A: Their guy made a better play than ours. Bad decisions, bad throws on me. Have to do a better job protecting the ball there.

Q: Was there a personal level of frustration, especially with the two picks?

A: I want to go out there and play well and I wanted to make a play. I wanted to win the football game. Disappointed, not that it doesn't get me. Ruined my night maybe, but I'll be ready tomorrow and bounce back. We got a long season. We're doing a lot of good things. We're making plays, so we're going to learn from it and get better.

Q: Did you see the guy on the second interception?

A: Yeah, I saw him. Just thought Shane was going to be able to get underneath him. Didn't think that guy would be able to undercut it the way he did.

Q: On the defense.

A: Defense did a good job. They got some key stops at times and gave us opportunities. Had a short field sometimes and so I thought we had plenty of opportunities offensively to extend the lead and get us a bigger lead and didn't take advantage of it. Didn't do it. Defense did a good job holding them to a field goal right there at the end and giving us time on the clock. A couple timeouts to get a field goal. We got to do our part. We got to do our job and we didn't do it.

Q: Was Norman covering Odell something you anticipated in your game plan?

A: Yeah, we figured that he would follow him around. It doesn't change our game plan; it doesn't change our play calling. I thought Odell made some nice plays and did a good job. We still call our plays the way we thought and go about our business.

Q: Were you aware that Odell was warned by the officials before the game?

A: I know he said something about it on the sideline, he wouldn't be able to come back and make some blocks. They were going to be watching him. I thought he handled that well and handled the situation well.

Q: Is there any sense of the regret that you could have put Washington away?

A: It was never about putting somebody away. It was about winning a game in the division. About us getting 3-0. It's a long season, so had a chance to win a game and go 3-0 and get a win in the division. It's disappointing we lost the game and kind of sticking to that.

Q: On the first interception, you were going for Tye. On the second, you were going for Vereen. When you have play makers like Beckham and Cruz...

A: Just going through the progression. We expect everybody to make plays; Shane's a big play maker for us. Will Tye's made plays for us. It just depends on the coverage, where guys are and how things are going and that's how it worked out.

I curious what the heck happened on the last one. He saw the guy, just thought he could zip it in, he fired that puppy too, the LB made a nice play.

Its a somehow dumber and fucking lazier question than the typical dumb and lazy questions that Eli and co. have to stand up there and patiently pander to these self-absorbed ignoramuses.
Decision making......

It was first down....he wasn't open.....Tye is not the kind of receiver, "to give him a chance".....ball should never have been thrown, or thrown away.....poor decision making on Eli....
