Marlins 2B Dee Gordon: "'Thank you,' Mets,' for being first class."

?
Is this sarcastic or serious?

What was the context of what happened? I saw Gordon hit a HR in his first AB but what did that have to do with the Mets other than playing them?

In the pre-game ceremony remembering Fernandez the Mets came out and joined the Marlins around the mound and paid respects to both the Marlins and Fernandez. It was clearly emotional for both teams.
Gotcha.

Thanks.
Sounds like to me like Gordon
Chris684 : 9/27/2016 10:17 am : link
is simply thanking the Mets for being respectful, professional and supportive of what it must have been like for the Marlins players to take the field for the first time since and one day after their friend teammate died.
Glad to help

Now if you'd just kindly roll over the next two games.
The pitch before Gordon hit the HR
Cruzin : 9/27/2016 10:42 am : link

He borrowed a right handed hitters batting helmet and stood on the right side of the plate to honor Fernandez. Colon was in on it and threw high and wide.

The Gordon switched to his natural lefty position and hammered his first HR in like 550 ABs. It was divine intervention.
Wasn't just any RH helmet Dee Gordon used
Shecky : 9/27/2016 11:01 am : link
It was Joses helmet. And on top of that, no one has pointed it out anywhere, but Dee also did the little leg twitch thing that Fernandez would do when he swings. Anyone that didn't have goosebumps watching that AB has got to be heartless.

Watched that happen with both of my kids and wife. Was truly a surreal moment. Dee Gordon of all people goes upper deck. Absolutely surreal and unforgettable moment.

Divine intervention, or did Colon groove it? The first pitch to the righty hitting Gordon was 83. The HR pitch was 85 right down the middle. Now Colon got shelled last night so he was clearly off, but is his velo down to 85 at this point? Honestly don't know, haven't paid attention to him this season.
I was going to say Colon
pjcas18 : 9/27/2016 1:35 pm : link
grooved it, but Gordon hadn't had a HR in forever, so even a grooved pitch to Gordon wasn't a sure HR/

plus I didn't want that to take away from the emotion of the moment. I didn't want the Mets to lose that game, but sometimes humanity is a cool thing to see.
Says it all
