Don't know yet...I ordered it only yesterday after checking out reviews of each.

The licensing issue bothers me some, but I've also been bothered by the gameplay in FIFA the last couple years. It's basically a coin flip for me so I thought I'd try PES this time around.

He recently left and started his own company so I don't think he knows about the final product of FF15. A year ago he told me not to get my hopes up, and judging by the demos and footage, i'd say he was right. Just looks like a really forced game, trying to tie reality WAY too much into what is supposed to be fantasy. How much time is going to be wasted tricking out my car and upgrading my emo clothes? The battle looks interesting, but haven't seen anything not done before.

I don't know. It looks like it's blending a lot of genres of games honestly. I don't know how I feel about it, but I'm trying to reserve judgement. I didn't dislike the demo. It was very action RPG, and you can tell by some of the trailers that there's stealth elements to some of the gameplay as well. I am trying to stay hopeful.

looks great. I like the idea of a very open world to start that narrows and becomes more linear as the plot picks up toward the end of the game. The videos I've seen of the characters walking around and exploring the beautiful world make me eager to explore, and the combat looks promising.

I'm the exact opposite. Take FF7 for example (and countless other RPG's. Spending the first 5-7 hours in Midgar, on a pretty linear path leads up to escaping and having a whole world to explore. I absolutely loathe the bait and switch of starting with full exploration then dropping you into FF13 linearity.

My other big problem is the character drawings. No doubt the open world is stunning, as it should be. But the players look like they will be the worst of the series which is incomprehensible. Emo and hunched over isn't something I can look at for 100 straight hours.

I'm willing to give the game a chance as I am a tremendous fan of the series, but I also haven't been satisfied with an installment since FFX so there's a lot of rightfully earned skepticism on my part.

I agree a lot of what you said. Mainly, that FF13 was a complete disaster, FF7 is timeless, and I hope the plot for FF15 doesn't overdo it with EMOness. I've gotten a bit more of a western vibe from what I've seen so we'll have to see how it turns also.

Also, I'm not sure that the end of FF15 is FF13 style linearity. I think it's more in that while you'll still have access to the open world, the objectives that you'll need to meet to move the plot forward will become increasingly linear as the game approaches the climax. I don't see it as a bait-and-switch, and if the plot is actually good, it seems natural to me for a JRPG.

One of the biggest downfalls of the RPG genre has been the awful localization. Also, JP storytelling appears to be very different from western storytelling. They rely on a lot of tropes and archetypes. At least in RPGs. This has been my main problem with these games over time. They just feel stagnant and the characters are increasingly hard to connect to.

They are not adding any additional content. I believe it will match or almost match the aesthetic quality of a ENB modded Skyrim. But, the main reason I am awaiting for it is because it will be 64 bits as oppose to the original 32 bits. Good for those with heavily modded Skyrim.

I really want to like it. But if the storytelling is as awful as FF13's was, great gameplay won't make a difference.

They just never had anything resembling a coherent storyline and combined it with a series of made up words and terms that did nothing but confuse and create a convoluted world with characters that no one cared about.

As long as there are no missions in which your assignment is to move a bunch of boxes from one side of a warehouse to another, the game may be worth picking up.

Dragon Age Inquisition was good too, but got too repetetive for me, the missions were never very rewarding.

Skyrim is the best of the action RPG's that I've played over the past 5/6 years and that was before the remaster.

A bigger tracking area
Already comes with controllers
Full body motion w/ a neat feature that warns you when you get close to real objects in your room
You can play Rift games on the Vive with 3rd party software
Many more VR titles to choose from and the fact you have Steam involved is huge.

Basically all this. I'm a big believer in Steam as they are pretty much the standard when it comes to new game releases outside of EA. It's a bit pricier than the rift, but you'll get what you pay for.

As for what's here right now, just got SPAZ 2. Cheap indie game (14 bucks on sale) that's addicting as hell. Was supremely let down by no man's sky.

Are you referring to the point in The Witcher where you have to free the dude and keep him safe?

I rarely had any issues beating anyone in that game, except the final boss in the last DLC. I think a lot of it just depends on how highly leveled you are and how well you use your potions and spells.

FMIC - RE: PES 17
Go Terps : 10/1/2016 5:55 pm : link
You'd asked about PES 17. It just arrived yesterday and I've had the chance to play it a bit.

My review would be similar to what you've probably already read online. In terms of off-field presentation and obviously licensing, FIFA is miles ahead. The game play on the field is significantly better in PES.

My biggest complaint with FIFA the last couple years was that the tactics weren't completely customizable, and even if they were the changes made by me really didn't seem to reflect on the field. In PES you can make more tactical changes and the players are more influenced by those changes. The game feels better too. It's easier to make swift passing moves, and crossing in particular feels more true to life.

I will say the learning curve going from FIFA to PES (and probably vice versa) is enormous. I played two matches online and got waxed 4-0 and 5-0. But while I'm struggling my opponents scored some mouth watering goals that I didn't see in FIFA. I don't mean 25 yard screamers, but good passing moves that ended in realistic looking finishes.

I still don't understand why PES continues to have shitty menus. The game has so many features and is so customizable that a clear menu system is really important. But yet again they've fallen way short in this area.

I wouldn't recommend one game over the other, because it really looks like a matter of taste. I'd be lying if I said the lack of licenses didn't bother me, but on the other hand the actual game play really is incredible.
GT..
FatMan in Charlotte : 10/1/2016 7:20 pm : link
that jibes with everything I've heard. I have to be honest though - I LOVE the new FIFA. While I'm building my Ultimate Team, I delved into the new storyline mode and it is incredible. I picked Everton as the club my guy would play for and the atmosphere and the feeling I'm actually in Goodison Park are pretty damn cool.

Even whn my guy gets sent out on loan, I chose Newcastle, so you still have the history of that club and stadium too.

I'm having a bitch of a time scoring though and it is like they've ratcheted up the AI on lower levels. I'm playing the offline league which is mainly against Amatuer level play and my bronze guys got waxed, my Silver's might get some ties and I had to use a gold team to win the promotion. In past years, I'd win the early levels like 4-0 most games.

One cool thing this year is that they have new squad building challenges where if you meet the criteria for a squad, they take those players away and give you a reward. For instance, you can trade an entire team of NOS players for a Legends Portugese player. But they start out even better than that. Trade in two bronze defenders and get a special pack. Trade in your unwanted bronze players and get a silver pack. This is perfect as I've already traded in most of my assigned players for better ones where in past years, you were stuck with them.

Still can't get rid of the assigned kits, stadiums and balls though.
