Duggan: Giants red zone failures

section125 : 9/28/2016 7:58 am
Duggan does a good job showing three plays that killed the Giants in the red zone.
We all saw Tye stop on the INT. What we didn't see was how open Cruz and Sheppard were, or how covered Tye was from the get go.

I remember thinking before the snap that if Tye broke outside - slant route - he would have an easy route to the corner from the pre-snap coverage.
Red Zone failures - ( New Window )
You mean a route to the pylon? A sail route?

There wasn't enough time. The Redskins zeroed out their coverage. What's wrong with that play is the total absence of athleticism by the player. That pass was once a staple of guys like Shockey, Boss, Ballard and Bennett. The concept is to get in front of the defender and wall him off like a basketball player does when he is blocking out for a defensive rebound. Like Witten did to the Giants in the opener last season.

But take field goal before you throw it up for grabs. 2 times down there 3s were lost because of that and a third time could have also resulted in a loss of points had the pass to Rainey been ruled a pick, as it came close to being.

Through the years, red-zone problems have plagued the Giants during the Manning era. Play calling has been pissed on and villified. A constant throughout is Eli's immobility. It is easier to score down close when your quarterback can run. Not just to score himself but also to bide time.

I guess the short answer, here, though, is get a better player.
It looks

like Donnell and Tye are running in mud out there. Hoping Adams can at the very least provide more athleticism when he's ready.
It seems that Eli has done more targeting this year
BLUATHRT : 9/28/2016 8:52 am : link
than going through progressions and hitting the open man. The Tye and Vereen picks from last week both seem to indicate this.

Abandoning the run doesn't help in the red-zone either. Maybe that frees up the TE just a little bit if Eli is dead set on making that throw to a covered TE over 3 other open guys.

retro, there was plenty of time. Tye is on the 8 in the photo. The pass as INT at the goal line. Tye running toward the pylon means he's probably on the three in a parallel time line accounting for the angle of the route. Anyway it was just an observation pre-snap by myself at the time, and it certainly doesn't mean I'm anywhere near right.

But the point was, Eli had better and already open options - and if he was looking for a quick dump knowing the blitz was coming, then a read to his right, where three WRs are running routes (more options) would have seem to been the better place to look. (of course I haven't a clue as to his hot read was.) He also has plenty of room in front of him to step up. All the clutter was alongside and beside him.
Totally agree.....

There are those that say Eli did not have the time...and while the pocket was collapsing, there was no one near him when he threw the ball....this play reminds me of the game last year where Parker was all alone in the middle of the field at the goal line, and Eli didn't see him.....Tye was never open, but Eli stared him down...a quick look elsewhere would have shown two wide open receivers....yes, he had the time.....but Eli, possibly because of his OL, is not going through the progressions, and is missing quite a few opportunities out there......I think the OL, has knocked at least one half second off Eli's clock...

You base this observation after he has thrown for nearly 1,000 yards in 3 games?
No.....

No, based on the last 5 years....
Eli should run a bootleg

McAdoo and Eli have both said that Tye was the hot read on that play. It wasn't the best throw, and the effort by Tye was even shittier. It's easy to say he should have gone to the open guys to the right, but when your hot read TE is singled up against a player he outweighs by 30+ pounds, I think you also expect him to be able to post up and make some kind of play on the ball instead of just giving up on the route.
Eli has a habit of putting the ball up
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/28/2016 3:05 pm : link
and giving his receiver a chance to make a play. Players want that.

The problem is Will Tye has been playing like he does not want to make a play.

That definitely wasn't a prime example of "basketball on turf", as Reese coins it.
