NFT: WFAN

With Francesa set to leave WFAN in 15 months, I'm curious to see who BBI thinks will replace him and where Mike will end up. Francesa has stated that he will continue broadcasting but it won't be at the FAN for 5.5 hours a day.

My best guess- Evan Roberts + a guy from outside the station. Brandon Tierney, Greg Giannotti or maybe a former athlete. I think they leave Benigno solo in the midday or maybe bringing in John Jastremski to pair with him.

As for Mike, I see him doing a show on the radio that mixes sports/ politics/ finance/ news for 3 hours a day. Whether this is a local NY show or on Sirius. I can't see him going the podcast route.

What do you guys think?

I wouldn't love
ryanmkeane : 9/28/2016 9:42 am : link
Roberts in that spot - he's just flat out tough to listen to in my opinion.
a promotion for Roberts make sense but if management gets a hint
Giants61 : 9/28/2016 9:50 am : link
that it would not be a popular choice he may not get the spot. It has to be a NYC person to relate to the fans and teams. I am no longer able to listen to WFAN or the NY ESPN station since I moved south but perhaps there is someone on ESPN that would consider the move.
Just my 2c is they'll try and find a name
pjcas18 : 9/28/2016 9:55 am : link
and it will probably fail magnificently and then that person will be replaced with a local person who after the failure everyone will like the replacement.

think replacing Howard Stern with David Lee Roth (who was then replaced by Opie and Anthony)

WFAN is done without Francesa
Giants2012 : 9/28/2016 10:05 am : link
They're hanging on by a thread IMO

They haven't injected solid new blood for a long while. It's a stale, monotonous, tired delivery from the rest. Awful radio
I think
ryanmkeane : 9/28/2016 10:12 am : link
they should think outside the box a bit with this one. Hiring someone from within WFAN will be stale. I don't really like the guy but Jim Rome comes to mind, or Doug Gottlieb. Someone who can at least hold the attention of the listener.
Kim Jones and Evan Roberts would get my vote

Totally agree...
TyreeHelmet : 9/28/2016 10:14 am : link
I think the morning show is awful. Not the biggest fan of Joe and Evan and don't think they could carry Mike's spot.

I thought there was a chance they'd resign Mad Dog but he just reupped with Sirius for 3 years. Maybe Mike goes to Mad Dog radio and they do shows together on the big days.

WFAN is in big trouble when Mike is gone though. He is that station.
I agree with the OP that it will be Roberts
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 9/28/2016 10:15 am : link
most likely with Gianotti. There is existing chemistry there that at least can work in the beginning.

Benigno can't and doesn't want to do a 5-hour show; they can plug in Kim Jones with him in that midday spot in a second (if she wanted it).

I wouldn't be surprised if they did rotating people for a few months to soften the blow of Mike leaving - this is what they did when Imus left before starting with B&C.
Kim Jones makes too much sense
jcn56 : 9/28/2016 10:15 am : link
Try again, and this time try thinking like WFAN Management and not someone with an IQ over 60.

I'd agree that someone with a broader sports perspective who's been doing it on a national level might be interesting...obviously would need to focus on NY sports, but would love to hear someone with the chops to discuss more than the Mets and the Jets and only pay occasional lip service to the rest
Rome
ryanmkeane : 9/28/2016 10:16 am : link
is similar to Mike in that he isn't boring - so there's that. I respect Roberts' sports knowledge but man, there's just nothing exciting about his takes or his calls or anything really.

Agreed...
Kim Jones
ryanmkeane : 9/28/2016 10:19 am : link
would be a GREAT #2 for that show. I'm not sure she could carry it by herself, as she's a bit too literal and a bit too by the numbers sometimes, but she'd be awesome to pair with someone outside WFAN.
Some of you seem to like Kim Jones.
Mr. Bungle : 9/28/2016 10:20 am : link
I get that. I get that.
What they should do
pjcas18 : 9/28/2016 10:22 am : link
is try and lure Dan Patrick out of moth balls.

I might be one of the few, but I like his format, his guests, his anecdotes, and he speaks proper English.

Might be too comfortable though to want the grind again at 60.
An outlier is Chris Simms
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 9/28/2016 10:23 am : link
CBS has been pushing him a lot across platforms -- and he's been filling in with Carton. Wouldn't be surprised if they went Roberts and Simms to balance and re-create the "average guy and jock" pairing that's been done with B&C and Mike and Mike.
WFAN sucks...
EricJ : 9/28/2016 10:24 am : link
Mike sucks, that illiterate fool Benigno sucks, etc etc

WFAN can go away today and the sports world would not miss them.

If they want to get people listening again to AM radio and not Sirius, then they will need some celeb type of hosts. Boomer is not good enough to hold it all together.
Mike on his last day...

i think they promote both beningo and roberts to Mike's spot. i think mike goes to sirrius or to a podcast with sports stuff - cannot see him doing an olbermann :-). what they should do is fire beningo and roberts, bring in folks who actually know sports and strategy and the local teams; and bring in someone equally knowledgeable for mike's sport. really don't like anyone out there - only person i can reasonably think of is harold reynolds but he's only baseball and assume would conflict with his stuff on mbln. guess perhaps could get the big guy from sports reporters for something different but probably couldn't carry 5 hours :-). guess go with some decently sane, smart former athlete - guess give banks a try :-)

I disagree...I really look forward to my morning and post work drives because of WFAN. It might not be must listen radio but it's entertaining.
WFAN is going to miss Francesa tremendously..
Sean : 9/28/2016 10:32 am : link
the baby boomers love calling in Francesa and breaking down June baseball, but I doubt many from the 18-49 demo are listening continuously. I find myself listening to more and more podcasts as traditional sports talk is now just overly manufactured hot takes.

Simms is awful radio. Going from Francesa to him would be a massive dropoff.

it might be Russo, but I think he has lost some of his interest in working that many hours.

If Francesca goes to Sirus, I will listen to him, especially on the NFL.
Russo has re-signed with Sirius

I agree with all of that about wfan but I think Mike is the worst thing that station has to offer
no to Roberts. I know they love Gianotti

I'll vote for Kim Jones but
Giants2012 : 9/28/2016 10:50 am : link
no way i put her with Roberts. Roberts is just awful.

Give the station a facelift and stop with biased Mets/Jets bullshit. Like Boston and Philly, put a team together covering all sports which DOES include hockey talk/calls on a daily basis. Save the line that people don't care less about hockey while Mike selfishly talks Horse racing and golf while dog spoke about Tennis.
Hopefully they cut down on commercials
Gap92 : 9/28/2016 10:52 am : link
Just have less of the them and charge advertisers more per spot. I still really like WFAN, but rarely listen anymore because it seems like 30 out of every 60 minutes are commercials.

Also, with smartphones now ubiquitous, is the update really necessary every 20 minutes?
agree that Mike leaving will hurt them big time.
Victor in CT : 9/28/2016 10:52 am : link
from 6:00am to 1:30, FAN is basically unlistenable with Cartoon and Norman, Bro and Evan.
If they can keep LT out of jail
Hades07 : 9/28/2016 10:54 am : link
Banks and LT might be a fun listen for Giants fans at least.

Carlin and Jones? You mean Max and Jones?

Personally, i hear Max self promoting himself way too much. Unless he changed his ways, i'd say no. His show wouldn't go past 5 min without him reminding everybody it was the Max Kellerman show with your host Max Kellerman and I'm Max Kellerman and you can catch the Max Kellerman show on Max Kellerman hours with me, again, Max Kellerman. Christ, the guy could be good if he just repeating his own name none stop.

I hope not, Chris Simms is still too green IMO. Although, he gets pretty combative with callers which might help his cause.

But I agree they should go outside the current pool of "talent".

May seem a little off topic, but I think they should reconsider the "20 20" updates. When the FAN started, there wasn't really a good way to get up to the hour sports scores. That's not an issue now and I think the "20 20" is just too repetitive with the same news and scores we already know. Very rarely do I not just turn off or tune out the FAN when the updates come on.

When the FAN started it was a relatively novel idea to have an all sports station. But the was different time in media and sports alike. The FAN is stale and dated now.

I would take the Sports Pope's exit as a chance to reconsider the entire format of the radio station. Aside from Francessor, the "20 20" update is the only hold over from (about) when the show launched.
Dave Rothenberg stinks. Absolutely stinks.
Mr. Bungle : 9/28/2016 12:07 pm : link
He tries to have a "funny" personality, but he's not funny and has no personality. Spends way too much time on stupid, non-sports tangents, too. Comes back from an 8-minute commercial break and talks for 5 minutes about getting a pedicure.

May be going out on a limb here, but I'd bet my house that Evan and possibly Joe have more sports knowledge in their finger tip than you do.
