TE blocking against the Redskins

cnewk : 9/28/2016 10:45 am
After going through the game again I have to say this was our TEs best game blocking in quite some time. Tye especially did very well. Donnell had a couple plays where he struggled, but mostly did his job. I didn't see Tye have a bad block during the game. By my count when Tye was in the game the Giants ran the 9 times for 74 yards. That's over 8 yards per carry! (He was also in for 5 and 6 yard runs that got called back for penalties on Richburg and Flowers.) His blocking has been up and down, but in this game it was excellent this past week.

I also thought Hart played a good game. He looked like our second best linemen in this game (after Pugh). Richburg and Flowers were both mostly solid in pass protection but struggled with run blocking more than I'm used to seeing. Jerry had one of his better games too. He still had some bad plays, but his run blocking looked much better than in the past. The Giants didn't run the ball with Brett Jones at center. Once Jones came in the game the Redskins blitzed a lot more frequently, and Jones did a very good job. I have no idea how his run blocking is, but he did very well with pass blocking.

Here are 2 plays that show good blocks by our TEs. These two plays had limited success even with good blocking because the defense knew what was coming.

1-10-(7:30 in 1st): Eli in shotgun changes the play yelling “panther, panther.” Will Compton immediately starts pointing to his right yelling “It’s going right. It’s going right.” He is right, it is a run left (defenses right). As the ball is snapped Hall (orange circle) begins running forward. Hart does an adequate job keeping Kerrigan to the outside and away from the play. Flowers combo blocks with Pugh and then moves on to the LB, Pugh and Richburg both do a good job of blocking their men to the right. Donnell (red circle) is blocking Trent Murphy and completely stonewalls him. Donnell has him sealed to the outside for the entire play and doesn’t get driven back at all. This opens up a huge hole with Jerry pulling through it. Jerry gets a block on the LB, hitting his outside shoulder to give Vereen a chance to get through the hole. Unfortunately by this time Hall has sprinted into the hole. Jerry gets pushed back some by the LB and so Vereen doesn’t have much room to make a move on Hall. This play was well blocked all the way around, but the Redskins stop it for a 3 yard gain because Hall was able to come up so quickly.

2-12-WAS 32(1:26 in 2nd) Eli in shotgun again yells “panther, panther.” And again Compton starts shouting that it’s going right. They shift their defense and you can see Compton and Phillips are motioning to Norman to readjust and come to the inside. Norman doesn’t move and Eli snaps it pretty quickly. Compton was lined up on the 27 basically on the right after they shifted he moved up to the 29 and right in the middle of the field. It’s the same play as before. Hart does a good job of sealing Kerrigan to the outside and away from the play. Flowers (red circle) combo blocks with Pugh and then moves on to Compton. Since Compton has shifted up and to the more to the right of the defense, Flowers is not in position to block him to the inside after helping Pugh move his man. He now meets him straight on and blocks him to the outside, leaving a smaller hole. He also hits him high and gets both arms basically wrapped around his neck and gets a piece of his facemask as he tosses him to the side (this draws the flag). Meanwhile Baker sheds Richburg’s (yellow circle) block and moves in to make the stop after a 5 yard gain. Throughout this Tye (black circle) has been blocking Trent Murphy and has done a good job of sealing him to the outside. Murphy does start to drive him backward, but it is after Vereen has already gotten by. Pugh also has driven his man well out of the play and Jerry has found his man and cleanly blocks him to the outside.

Thanks cnewk.

I particularly remember TC commenting on how much Tye's blocking has improved and how hard he works toward that end
Thanks for these

I may have learned more football from your posts than I knew in total before I read them.
Here is another play I found interesting

2-7-NYG 45 (2:09 in 2nd) – There’s a lot of blockers involved here, so I used just about every color circle you can easily see here. This gives a similar look to the others I posted, but is to the right. Pugh (yellow) is pulling. If it was like the previous plays Jerry and Hart would double team the DT and then Hart would move on to the LB with Pugh coming after to lead the way. This time, though, Hart (black circle) and Jerry (white circle) let the DT and they immediate move to the second level. This leaves Pugh as he pulling to make the crucial block on the free DT. He picks him up quickly and turns him out of the play so he can slow Vereen down or redirect him. Richburg’s (blue) block is also key as he turns his man away from the play. He isn’t able to sustain his block long, but it was long enough for Vereen the run through the giant hole. Hart and Jerry get to the LBs and make good blocks to give Vereen a hole now through the second level. Vereen gets 10 yards downfield without a defender ever coming close to him and he has an open field to keep running ultimately picking up 25 yards. Tye (red) once again has locked on his man. This time he has Kerrigan, he blocks him to the outside and then doesn’t let Kerrigan engage to pursue the play downfield. Flowers (pink circle) has blocked his man to the outside. But, once again his hands get up too high. You can see his hand on Murphy’s neck right above the 9 on his jersey. He then turns him and throws him to the ground. It wasn’t really a hold, but he has been called for a hold on similar plays. Fortunately the ref didn’t throw a flag. You can see Jerry also let has right hand get up too high as it is above the defenders shoulder, but he doesn’t let it get to the defenders back and he adjusts and gets his hands in a better position quickly.

By the way...

on that last play, in some of the pictures, you can't even tell Hart is blocking someone. But, Cravens is there and getting demolished. Yeah, a tackle should be able to overpower a safety, but Hart did very well to get in the right position and then to not simply not let Cravens go.
Thanks for taking the time to post this!

Side note, how do you think Richburg is doing...

I've heard he's not playing well but I haven't focused on him much and obviously don't know oline play as well as many on this site.
Another interesting play was the next one

It comes right after the 25 yard gain. There was the potential for a huge gain here, but it results in a loss of 2. 1 of 2 run plays stopped for a loss.

1-10-WAS 30(2:00 in the 2nd) It similar to the 25 yard gain with Pugh (red) pulling and Hart (yellow) going right to the second level. But, this time Tye (white) is on the left and pulling behind Pugh. This means Hart is leaving the DE instead of the DT. This means Pugh has to go farther to pick up the block, and he his blocking a faster player. He isn’t able to make it in time and Kerrigan is able to make the stop. If Pugh is able to get the block Vereen has all kinds of room to run on the right with Tye as a lead blocker. It’s hard to know what the cause of the break down is. If Hart gives Kerrigan a quick push to the outside before moving on, Pugh is probably able to get there in time. It also looks like Pugh takes too shallow of a route on his pull considering he needs to block an unblocked DE. I’m not sure if Pugh can get there in time even if takes the optimal path (without risking tripping Eli on his way). I’d say Hart should have given Kerrigan a push to the outside, but that might not have been the play design. You can’t see it from the pictures but Hart initially set up as if pass blocking, but without touching Kerrigan.

To me it looks like Richburg has been struggling. I think he will get it straightened out, but this was not one of his better games. The first two games weren't what I was hoping for either, honestly. He hasn't been as good as last year, but it's only 3 games.
Thanks. Hopefully the line/TE play continue on an upward trend.

Great work cnewk

Thought Hart played well in replacement of Newhouse against one of the better DEs in the league.

Pugh had a great game. Flowers looked like he is taking some steps forward even in the technique department.
cnewk nice work and thanks.

Love those frame by frame explanations.
I was wondering how Hart did. I thought he and Jerry had a very good game run blocking. Just seemed they were moving the defensive left side backwards. Despite the notes that Hart doesn't have quick enough feet for tackle, he sure seems pretty quick to me. Yes he got beat twice (once was a PF against Baker for tackling Eli late with a low hit). But on both those the DE took a very deep route that basically takes him out of the play if Eli steps up or gets the ball out in a reasonable time. He'll need to learn to stay with his man all the way.

Let's hope he continues to play well in Minnesota and keeps Newhouse on the bench.
Does it bother anyone else
Mike in Philly : 9/28/2016 2:23 pm : link
that the defense was able to diagnose the direction of the play when Eli called "panther, panther"?

I, too found that disturbing...and I hate these types of "tendencies" personally.

I don't want to give any opposing D any advantage over us.

Yeah, it's definitely discouraging. All teams have tendencies the defense can pick up on. I'm sure they will make some changes to try to keep this from happening again. I think these were the only times he called panther in this game. So they must have figured something out from past games. Both times Eli called out z or easy before panther. It could be a combination of calls they deciphered.
