Vikings DL...

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 9/28/2016 7:52 pm
Damn good. Our weaknesses is OL.

How do we combat it? Do we add an extra blocker?

If I'm McAdoo, I'd emphasize to Eli about getting the ball out early. We probably won't be able to take a lot of shots down field.

Our offense is predicated on getting the ball out early already.

Yes. But quicker than usual this Monday.
I'd

have Jones in the backfield as an extra blocker on obvious pass plays. I'd also use some screens and maybe a reverse to try and slow down their rush. Their DL is really good.
Getting the ball out early is the obvious, but
Diver_Down : 9/28/2016 8:05 pm : link
you can also negate a strong rush by effective screens and rolling the pocket. It will be imperative that our TE chip and block. Also, we have very effective with Jerry and Pugh pulling. With a strong DL rush, it helps in clearing the hole as the guard just needs to effectively seal the DL that is left. An effective run game will slow their rush and give Eli time to find his receivers.
Every time we have played Minnesota, we have tried to
Saos1n : 9/28/2016 8:08 pm : link
Get rid of the ball quickly on short routes all game... They always seem to be prepared to jump the routes, undercut the throw and force turnovers...

I'd like to see them mix it up a bit and move the pocket, get Eli outside and give OBJ, Cruz and Shep time to work downfield for explosive plays...

Can't wait for Monday night... pay back is a bitch
Have the TE's
Doomster : 9/28/2016 8:44 pm : link
help the T's block on passing downs and then slip out, into patterns.....chip blocks accomplish nothing....
Did you see that hit Chris Baker laid on Eli?
Boy Cord : 9/28/2016 9:24 pm : link
The Skins DL is a joke compared to MN. The OL, TEs, backs, you name it, had better be prepared.
Personnel
SLIM_ : 9/28/2016 9:30 pm : link
I think we have been in the 1 back 3 receiver set around 90% of the time if not more. Yes, you can move around players and have different formations but it is much easier to game plan a team that only uses this personnel grouping. We did start using 4 receiver sets late in the game and moved the ball well during that.

This is a game where I think McAdoo needs to be a little more creative. Not sure if Brett Jones would be good in the backfield during passing downs but he should absolutely be able to neutralize one of the defensive ends in the pass rush from the wing position. Our production comes from our wide receivers predominantly anyway. I'd rather leave big people in to block and take a shot with our best players.
Eli has got to be

Sick of this by now year after year. Can you imagine if he was given time to throw the ball like your average QB. Feel sorry for the guy.
I was worried
Joey in VA : 9/28/2016 10:51 pm : link
But after the first 3 games I'm not. The front 5 looks for the first time in years like a unit, not 5 guys flailing around. Baker put the wood to Eli but don't knock the Skins front 7 that much, Kerrigan and Murphy are big bull rushing OLBs and Baker is a load in the middle. Richburg will have trouble with Linval, he will need help and that means we'll have to keep an H-Back in to help the OTs. This isn't a nightmare unit, they're good, they've been playing well but this is not a group to be afraid of. I have a feeling our OL comes out swinging.
Joey the optimist, impressive, inspirational even
Cruzin : 9/28/2016 11:41 pm : link

I wish I could get on board but

The DL being as impressive as it is, missing Sharif Floyd but boasting Murray, Joseph and Griffin isn't the final factor to overcome.

Sendejo, Harrison and Kendricks lead the team in tackles. Captain Munerlyn is a star corner, Trae Waynes is a physical stud, the only weak spot I'd Terrence Newman who's old but learned. He'll give a 10 yard cushion which to me is the only opening on the field, hopefully we can get OBJ lined up over there and hope for yards after catch.

Field position will dictate this game, specials will be highlighted, I'd like to be excited that the Giants could rise to the challenge of a dominant defensive team but I fear for Eli in this one.

I do respect Joey's opinion though, it helps, a little.

Toth029 : 9/29/2016 12:31 am : link
Munnerlyn is not a star corner and Waynes is not a stud. Lay off the crack.

Harrison Smith, however, is those things and is dangerous anywhere he is. Sandejo is average. Speedy LB group but not unbeatable. Joseph and Griffen very good up front but Floyd out is a blessing.

BleedBlue : 9/29/2016 1:11 am : link
their safeties are good as is kendricks...lets not blow their corners...you have an old fart, a young kid, and a playmaker but far from "star" anthony barr is solid as well and that DL is strong. this is a VERY good unit. We cant run on high school defenses, we wont run here. eli will have to win it with those three WRs....if OBJ, shep and cruz play very well we can put up maybe 17-20 points. that being said their offense isnt very good...if our defense can play well maybe we hold em to 14-17 and win a close game. i am very scared for monday night and if had to bet money id be hard pressed not taking the 3-0 vikes at home even without AP and Bridgewater
Man, this place needs to get a grip
David in LA : 9/29/2016 1:33 am : link
The Minnesota DL will give any OL fits. Our OL was a question mark in the offseason, but so far Flowers, Jerry, and Hart have played well. TE is a bigger weakness. CB is a bigger weakness with Apple and DRC out this week. OL actually has been a pleasant surprise so far.

What if we turn Richburg around at the LOS and have him hike the ball over the LOS.

I agree this has been my problem with McAdoo the playcalling and formations have not been creative he's really not doing that well of a job and he's sopposed to be an X's and O's guy !
Beatty may play more as
Simms11 : 9/29/2016 7:22 am : link
a 3rd Tackle or TE in obvious passing situations. We'll have to go max protect. It also looks like Rainey can execute a screen pass and so I think we'll see some of that too. Their LBERS are very good too. Very formidable Defense and our Oline will really have to be physical in this one.
Our OL

really hasn't been a glaring weakness this season.

about sacks this games as I am penalties. Seems like when we get into a bit of a groove, we get nabbed for a holding or personal foul.

That's not how it works.
O-line and the TE positions
Bluesbreaker : 9/29/2016 10:12 am : link
Are problems .. The TE position its quite obvious
they are mediocre in the blocking department and unfortunately
they have to stay in to block more often then not to
make up for the deficiencies in our O-line .
WE could easily be 0-3 thankfully the Cowboy's were minus
there star QB and most likely there best Pass Rushers
and came very close to beating us .
The defense responded against the Saints who's defense is
average at best . Add in the fact that we made enough
penalties mistakes and drops to keep us from scoring
an offensive TD .
If anything the offense has taken a step back .
The opposition does not respect our run game and is effectively not allowing us deep passing plays . Which
to me is what Eli does best .
Now here we are on Monday Night we can hope that the
Vikings come out flat and the offense comes out and
plays it's Best game of the season and the Defense finds
its way to the QB and doesn't give up early back breaking
plays early .
I feel this game will show whether or not we are a formidable team that can win 9-10 games or we are middle
of the road 6-8 win team .

As long as Jerry/Newhouse are on the team, BBI will just automatically assume the OL sucks. When in reality - it's been very solid so far.

Hell, you could argue the DL has been less effective.

Ok, and if I'm the defense with the d-line the Vikings have upfront, I utilize the same strategy the Eagles have used in their home games against the Giants the last two years.

Using the crowd noise to your advantage, bump and jam the Giants receivers at the line of scrimmage (the Eagles had mediocre CB's), eliminating a free release to throw off Eli's initial read and force him to hold the ball for a second allowing your defensive front 4 (or 5) to isolate one-on-one against the Giants offensive lineman get the pressure needed to alter the decision making and force a bad throw or get a sack.

So what is the Giants counter to that? Both times it happened, the offense crumbled and that didn't even take into account the back breaking turnovers.
Hey BigBlue crew
SKOLman : 9/29/2016 7:43 pm : link
I'm a lifer Vikes fan and been reading your board some to see what you think about Mondays game.
It's crazy to look at the numbers for Eli against Minny over the years. Hard to chalk it up to anything other than coincedence and his penchant for being extremely streaky IMO. When he's on, he's really good and when he struggles he throws picks. At least from what I've seen over the years.
This current Vikes line is probably the best since the Millard Doleman era (mid to late 80's)....maybe better, especially in terms of depth and coaching. Definitely the best Eli has had to face when it comes to the Vikings. On the other hand, I'd bet pretty big money that this group of WRs is the best the Vikes have had to face in Eli's time too.
The real matchup, to me, will be whether or not the Vikes DBs can keep with and disrupt the timing in the short passing game. Also if they continue, as a unit, to be sure tacklers after the catch. Fundamentals, in a nut shell.
The Vikes D has kinda come out flat in the first 3 games and surrendered points at the start. If that trend continues it could bode well for Eli and Co.
I kinda expect Waynes to follow OBJ all night as he is the quickest guy out there for the job...but is still learning to find the ball in the air. Rhodes is a big strong shut down type that presses at the LOS, he's pretty solid and the best CB. Munnerlyn and old man Newman might be ripe for the picking if Eli gets time and into rhythmn. I'd expect help from the safties where ever those to are concerned.
I really hope it's a good game and that our offense does some improving. Certainly seen enouh injuries already and it looks like you guys have been getting hit hard recently. So, no more of that please.
I'll poke my head in here later and see what kind of responses there are~
