NFT: Sweet 16 Gift help $$?

napoleon : 9/28/2016 8:06 pm
So the wife and I got invited to her youngest cousins sweet 16. We are literally twice as old as the guests. Just wondering, what is the going rate for a sweet 16 gift these days?

They are having the party at a restaurant. We planned on giving $100 but I have no idea if that is cheap or too much.

I know there's been posts about weddings and stuff, so I appreciate the help.
There is no friggen "right amount"

How much it would be for you and the wife to go out to a nice dinner with drinks and a top and give that.
$50 bucks for the kid is plenty

$50 straight to the parents to cover tips for the staff is very fair.

I thought this was a basketball thread, lol.

Depends on your income and what you feel comfortable giving.

A private moment with the dad ( assuming he's paying for it) thanking him and placing a folded 50 in his hand, saying " here, this is to help cover the staff, we're having a great time, thanks again" pretty much leaves a good impression so you can relax the rest of the night.

At least I would consider that cool if I was throwing the party...
no money. Condoms.

I'd be insulted.

Shit, just wait til I start drinking, then you'd be insulted!

If it's open bar, maybe. It's a cousin and no one's in the age group, just the effort to be there plus a $50 gift is plenty. The extra $50 to cover staff is decent, anything more sets a precedent you have to at least equal every get together, not to mention now you have to show up at future party's also.
I think it is appropriate to give something that

exceeds the cost of you attending. So if it is on the order of $50 for each of you, $100 is appropriate, but it could be higher or lower.

You welcome..

or a cheap whore

Then again, a video game might be perfect for this generation.

I think $50

is fine. iTunes card is good, they love that. Gift Card to the local mall - they can buy what they want.

This is my approach also.
Yeah, $100
lugnut : 9/29/2016 9:12 am : link
is mighty generous. You're certainly fine at $50, iTunes card probably good.
it isn't a wedding
UConn4523 : 9/29/2016 9:24 am : link
$50 is plenty for a kid. If the parents are throwing a party to get gifts, then they are doing it for the wrong reason. "Covering your cost" of being there is ridiculous for a birthday party. If the parents can't afford it they shouldn't be throwing the party.

where do you live? That plays a big part in it.

$100, is it going to make or break you? Just give a $100 bucks and move on.
n+ $1
NoPeanutz : 9/29/2016 3:49 pm : link
Where n= the $ amount that your brother in-law is giving.
