NFT: Has anyone ever had a acetabular labral tear (hip labrum)?

OBJ_AllDay : 9/29/2016 1:12 am
In a softball game about two months ago I had to reach awkwardly for a ball thrown wildly to first and injured my groin. For the next few days maybe a week or so I had a lot of pain in my groin area and couldn't really sleep with my leg fully extended. The closer I kept my leg to my chest with my foot planted on the bed the more comfortable I was. anytime my leg was fully extended I felt a pulling on my hip.

2 months later the pain isn't so bad when just walking and I no longer have to lift my legs with my hands to get into and out of the car. However I have developed a lot more discomfort in my hip. I can't cross my left leg on to my right and make the "4" symbol with my body. I don't have that range of motion. I have a clicking and catching sound if I attempt to jog in my hip which is very uncomfortable and if I twist a little awkwardly I still have immense pain in my groin.

Is this most likely bursitis or a labral tear? I'm hoping the former as I am an avid runner and would hate to have to have surgery. I will prob see a doctor soon but I heard these things are tough to diagnose.
never heard of it

but i have no doubt someone else on the board has suffered and recovered from it. Seems like something that would happen to many of us as we try to play games our bodies prefer we simply reminisce about.
Sorry to hear about your pain,

Please do not go to the Giants or Mets doctors or your shoulder will be operated on.....
My younger daughter (23)...

...was diagnosed with a torn labrum in her hip but opted against surgery for the time being and is just limiting her exercise. She was diagnosed at HSS after x-rays and an MRI, so I do think it's something that they can tell you what your problem is. We saw a doc Dr. Nawabi there I liked very much.

Good luck with it.
I would get it checked out

You don't want to risk developing arthritis in that hip joint.

Tore her right hip labrum as a highschool freshmen playing soccer. Finished the season and had surgery. Closest dr. That we trusted was out in Buffalo. 4 hrs from me. Six months of rehab.
She made it back for her sophomore season and ended up tearing her left labrum. Finished that season up and had another surgery, this time on her left hip. Another six months of painful rehab, and she made it back for her junior season. She is now in college. She says she is glad she elected to go with surgery, if not, she would not have played again.
It's a long tough rehab but if your young and athletic then it's worth it. If your not active as much you can elect just rehab and straighten the hip flexor muscles and try that.
Btw, try your best to find a doctor who specializes in this as it will make a world if difference. My daughter also had to have both hips shaved down some so it doesn't do it again. Called hip impingement.
Wonder if that's what I've got.

Water skiing attempt July 4th weekend. Left leg went very wide and I felt a deep 'POP' in my left buttock. Was very relieved I could stand and walk afterward - still had full range of motion, but had a 'deep bruise' pain. Presumed it was a muscle tear. Sitting for long periods would cause the most pain.

That was July 4th. The pain is nowhere as severe as it was July 4, but it's still not gone.

I presume a muscle tear would be painless by now?

Thoughts?

Says he felt like a bad pulled groin that wouldn't heal. Plus alot of catching in her hip flexor.

They had to do an MRI with contrast to diagnose it. A normal MRI alot of times won't find it. They inject a dye into your hip socket and then MRI it. Or you can find a hospital that has a 3T MRI. Then you don't have to have injection.

that's exactly what I am feeling. The hip catch is a little concerning. I definitely don't want that my whole life. So I guess I am having surgery on it if that's the case since I am a very active person.

Thanks for the responses guys. Very helpful.
get the surgery and also research your surgeon.

I have had two hip replacements and had both done at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. It is worth the trip down there. they are geniuses and have all the latest tech. Their surgeons are also professors at the med school. Thats what you want. my results were fantastic, playing tennis again three times a week
dont go to HSS
