Why on earth is "Robert Thomas" on this team?

NYGmen58 : 9/29/2016 9:54 am
There was no explanation of why he was even signed in the first place.

He has bounced around from one training camp to the next and never recorded even a tackle in an NFL game and yet the Giants saw fit to sign him to the 53-man roster in place of Hughes, a guy with some experience and upside (I know Hughes has since been re-added).

I understand the young man has apparently been "ill" since signing with the Giants and he hasn't even practiced with the team yet. Whatever his ailment, it must be serious and I wish him a speedy recovery, but what is he doing on the active roster? Why would the Giants sign a guy with an illness to take up a precious roster spot? Again, I'm not taking the illness lightly, but this team doesn't even have a fullback on the roster, is thin int the secondary and offensive line, and yet we have a sickly inexperienced player on the team instead?

Is it possible the Giants are hiding something about "Robert Thomas"? Does anyone have any inside information as to why he is on the team as a 5th DT when we are in dire need of help at other positions?

Can't he be placed on some non-football injury list or jettisoned with pay?

Just wondering if anyone has any inside information or insights. The Giants have been very tight-lipped about this and has me wondering what the real story is here.

This is a great question...

one with a seemingly simple answer that with the passing of time has become more and more complex.

I'd love for the beats to do some more digging around to help us understand. I understand the desire to protect his privacy regarding his health issues, but the questions related to keeping him on the 53 man roster are valid, imo.
Robert Thomas is not one man.

If you claim a player off waivers you have to keep him on your 53 for 4 weeks? Is that true? That would explain it.

Ahhh - gotcha...

Well, then they must really like Thomas to carry him on the 53 for 4 weeks inactive. Strange.
Because he's so smooth

Johnny5 : 9/29/2016 10:42 am : link
I remember looking him up when they added him (because I had ZERO idea who he was). He is a big stout NT type tackle who apparently had flashed some for Carolina in preseason. Carolina has a pretty damn good DL and he was cut at the end of preseason.... I'm assuming someone on the Giants staff was watching him pretty closely and felt he would be a good fit behind Snacks (at least as a space eater), so they signed him. But that's all speculation...
"Robert Thomas"? Are you suggesting he's using an alias?

The lying beat reporters say Thomas is sick, but he's actually the healthiest defensive tackle in the history of football. And rich. Really, really rich. Why should he suit up if he gets paid anyway? That makes him smart. It's called business, by the way.

Well, at this point we getting close to not having any healthy scratches (or having to dress 3 QBs):

Josh Johnson
Jennings
Thompson
DRC
Apple
Behre
Newhouse

And considering 4 of those guys are DBs (plus M Thompson on IR), to many, it seems that that roster spot would be better used on getting an extra DB up to speed rather than a 10th DL.

DL are more likely to get hurt and need extra depth/ DRC may play as may Apple.

That's why you have a practice squad. They could sign an extra player from the PS, that's been there for a few weeks, to the active roster and then replace said player on the PS with another. Obviously the new PS player would be to add depth to whatever position appears thin.

And yes, Josh Johnson is definitely dead weight.
"Robert Thomas," this name keeps coming up over and over again.
Giantology : 9/29/2016 2:48 pm : link
Every day "Robert Thomas" mail is getting sent back to me. Robert Thomas! Robert Thomas! I look in the mail, and this whole box is Robert Thomas! So I say to myself, "I gotta find this guy! I gotta go up to his office and put his mail in the guy's goddamn hands! Otherwise, he's never going to get it and he's going to keep coming back down here." So I go up to Rob's office and what do I find out, Mac? What do I find out?! There is no Robert Thomas. The man does not exist, okay? So I decide, "Oh shit, buddy, I gotta dig a little deeper." There's no Robert Thomas? You gotta be kidding me! I got boxes full of Robbie! All right. So I start marchin' my way down to Carol in HR and I knock on her door and I say, "Carol! Carol! I gotta talk to you about Robert." And when I open the door what do I find? There's not a single goddamn desk in that office! There...is...no...Carol in HR. Mac, half the players on this roster have been made up. This football team is a goddamn ghost town.

Hopefully, the reason is that all of them are really good players or prospects, not the usual roster filler fodder.

I got the sense there may have been a rule change this year about waiver wire players in addition to practice squad players and you do have to keep 4 weeks. I can't say that is accurate, I just got the sense that is what Pat believed.
Bizarre
Dragon : 9/30/2016 2:44 am : link
Nothing about this move adds up if he was sick first move should have been to release him or NFI. Now almost a month later he is still on the roster being carried as sick what sickness still unknown. Is this somehow a process after the JPP situation that maybe the NFL has taken note of? In addition they are going to be short handed in the secondary this week while the DL has only two players with minor nicks or injuries. We are also talking about a player who has not done anything for this team or another to explain why the roster spot he is holding is not a waste.
