Can the pass rush fire this week?

bignygfan : 9/30/2016 10:28 am
So we are near the bottom of the league in sacks. We know we must fix this. Our two studs - JPP and OV - have two. The Vikes lead the league in sacks and their two DEs have combined for seven - not to mention the 3.0 by our good friend Linval Joseph.

Sam Bradford has been sacked 6 times in his two games. He presents IMO a pretty easy target to get this pass rush going. Is this the week we finally really get after the QB?
This is a week
Old Dirty Beckham : 9/30/2016 10:31 am : link
where OV has to bring it. He's played 3 stud LT and has played solid.

FLemmings is a young guy who has struggled. OV needs to make a game changing play. That's what he's paid to do, not stop the run.
Vikings
Toth029 : 9/30/2016 10:34 am : link
Whole line as a whole has struggled. Boone is injured, too. Andre Smith has not played well at RT.

Both need to bring it, and so does Hankins.
Agree 100%
NYBEN1963 : 9/30/2016 11:16 am : link
but I will add that OV has drawn at least 2 holding penalties that I recall which are almost as good as sacks.
And get Okwara

Some chances from the DE position also !
Everyone is talking about the Vikings defense,
Diver_Down : 9/30/2016 11:37 am : link
but this could be the game that the media will be talking about our defense. Bradford isn't a running threat and with Peterson out, I don't think JPP or OV will have be tasked with a Cage Rush as Spags refers to it. I guessing Spags will let Dogs be Dogs and get after it.

With the notion that we may be fielding offensive receivers as safeties, the game plan will be not to allow routes develop where a safety is required for tight coverage. Rather let the D-Line get after Bradford to shorten the time he has and to pluck the ducks out of the sky.
It's really the Giants only way to win
I Love Clams Casino : 9/30/2016 11:53 am : link
Giants offense is better than the Vikings, if the D can neutralize the Vikings offense, the Giants pull this one out. unfortunately, after last week, I am skeptical about that happening....
I'm getting a little worried about the pass rush
Beer Man : 9/30/2016 11:56 am : link
During the first two games the Giants pass rush faced two of the better O-lines in the NFL, so my expectations were tampered down a bit. However, last week with the team facing a middle of the road O-line I expected to see more pressure, and was disappointed that we didn't. True they got a couple of sacks in, but I expected to see consistent pressure on Cousins all game, and it just wasn't there. Cousins seemed to be too comfortable in the pocket for much of the game. When your DBs are dropping like flies, your pass rush needs to bring it so that there is not enough time to exploit the inexperienced and less talented DBs filling in.

He's gotten a decent # of snaps from DT and hasn't done much with those opportunities.
And the Giants aren't 'near the bottom'

in sacks. They are tied for 13th in the NFL with 6 sacks.

They are dead last in QB Hits though with only 7.

We owe Bradford one
allstarjim : 9/30/2016 12:13 pm : link
They need to get some hits on him, and he will make some mistakes. The Vikings could also be missing Alex Boone on Monday night, that would also be a big blow. Some guy named Zac Kerin, a second year player from Toledo, would ostensibly start at LG as his replacement, going up against Damon Harrison... good luck young fella. Getting an inside pass rush on Bradford would be huge in this game.
Agree all.......
Simms11 : 9/30/2016 12:23 pm : link
the pass rush will be huge this week, especially with a banged up secondary. We need JPP to be the JPP of a few years ago and use some athleticism to get around the corner. He started to look more like the old JPP last week. Maybe Soags could run a few more stunts to confuse the Oline, as well. Once the OLineman gets his hands on JPP is usually becomes a stalemate. I'd also like to see more from Owa and Okwara. Is the 4 Aces package really working? Moving quicker DEs inside in pass rushing downs is a novel concept, but it doesn't appear to be working.

True, they are not at the bottom, but a number of those sacks came from the secondary on the blitz. The D-line sack count is down, and as you pointed out the team is last in QB hits. The D-line sacks, hurries, and QB hit numbers need to come up.
That link is flat-out wrong
bignygfan : 9/30/2016 2:13 pm : link
It has the Vikings with 6 sacks total. Griffen and Hunter alone have 7.

We only have 4 sacks. No one has more than 1. We are near the bottom. We are tied for 23rd.

We need JPP and OV to step up.

The DEs have probably been the most disappointing unit thus far this year.
hello
SKOLman : 9/30/2016 3:01 pm : link
The Vikes O-line has little going for it right now. The key for getting after Bradford will be how well the Giants can stuff the run. If McKinnon and Asiata get some running room, Bradford will have a much easier time. The guy has been getting the ball out quickly and it's a minor miracle that he hasn't been hit more often.
Zimmer said Boone will play, but if not his replacement is Sirles, not Kiern.
If you can clamp down on Diggs and Rudolph while stuffing the run, Bradford will be in trouble.
Thielen is sneaky fast and has great hands. Also look for McKinnon to be involved in the passing game this week.
It shouldn't be that hard for the Giants to check this offense...it will be interesting to see if Eli can put points on the board the other way.
I see a close, lower scoring game...maybe decided by TOs and such
I'm Surprised

JPP isn't making more plays. I don't know Vernon well but I've watched every down JPP has played and I keep waiting for him to get back to where he was 4 years ago. Where is that JPP? Is this the best he can be? Will his hand always be a liability? Come on JPP, we need you!

We need a dominant effort by the defense this week to win.
I think JPP has been tremendously disruptive and effective this year..
richynyc : 9/30/2016 7:53 pm : link
...sacks are not the only measure of a D-lineman's effectiveness. Playing to contain the QB when that is your DC's scheme that week, defending the run, and batting down passes at the LOS are all as important in my mind as sacks in evaluating a DE's play.

There are many DE's who have sold out on pass rushing while neglecting those other run snd contain responsibilities who amass gaudier sack totals but aren't two way DL's. To me that is what made Strahan elite, he was a complete DE, not just a "sack artist" like Mark Gastineau, to mention a name some of you younger folks might not know or remember.

JPP is doing just fine so far this year in my book, as are Hankins, Harrison and OV, who I think is playing more dinged than we know. Just one opinion...
It's been disappointing given the money invested on that line
giantgiantfan : 10/1/2016 3:54 pm : link
however, it has not been dismal like it was last year. OV has had some holdings on him and JPP/OV have two sacks between them. JPP had a huge sack at the end of the half against the Redskins preventing them from scoring any points.

With that said. Hankins should be getting more penetration, he had 7 sacks one year without having a probowl level DT next to him in Snacks. JPP and OV need to be more disruptive as well. These guys are getting paid to win games, not be solid.

I have a theory that when you sign a guy to a nice contract they should be able to take over at least one game a year and get you a win you would not have otherwise had.

I'd say collectively the Giants d-line did that against Dallas week 1 by shutting down the run.

Week 2 Jenkins did it with his field goal block TD.

Week 3...? No one took over.

We have the guys: Eli, Odell, Shep, Cruz, entire D-Line, DRC, Harris (on specials) and Jenkins.

This would be a week where one of them takes over a game we are not expected to win.
