Tiki Barber 'A Joke"

siena16 : 9/30/2016 1:52 pm
Tiki Barber, the guy who announced his retirement in the middle of the 2006 season criticized Odell Beckham for being "look-at-me player."

Tiki is such a tool.

Let me know when Odell starts doing interviews about teammates contract disputes and how they should be happy with what they got. And of course always letting his teammates know how much smarter he is than them.

did you start watching this team last week? Do you really think "Odell hitting stuff" is the extent of poor behavior here so far? Do you really think Strahan was an angel during his time here as a player?

Odell up may have an attitude problem? Should Coughlin have been forced into retirement? Any chance for a controversial sound byte? Call up Tiki, hell, it's about all he's good for. Well, that and leaving the woman who stuck by you through your learn years when she's 8 months pregnant with your child for a female equivalent of a mid-life crisis Ferrari.

All I know is that it's gotta drive the guy absolutely mad when he turns on his TV every morning. For years he cultivated the media persona: trained, interned, practiced, and ultimately retired early for a career in the media that culminated in him wearing a dragon costume and calling a woman the "C" word at the Olympics. Meanwhile his not-so-good buddy Strahan sticks around, gets the ring, rides off into the sunset a SB hero and Giants all time favorite, decides to throw his hat in the TV broadcasting ring without seemingly much throught, and before you know it he's one of the most loved on-air personalities in America. I'm not saying Strahan didn't work very hard to get to where he is, I read an article not to long ago about just how grueling his schedule is, especially during football season, but it sure seems like "fell into" the career Tiki groomed himself for years.

While I don't wish Tiki any ill will (it's not worth the time, effort, or consideration), I do get a kick out of that. Of course he'd say it doesn't bother him. But Strahan is making more than he did playing ball to appear on TV while Tiki is available to appear at your bachelor party. That's, ummm...what's the word..."comical"?

Considering Tiki's opinion of Strahan and comments about him during their playing days, it's some Haman/Mordecai level stuff for Tiki to see Strahan get the post-football career he tried so hard to carve out for himself.

See, I don't believe Tiki groomed himself at all. Like Strahan, Tiki was offered a position on a pre game show. Strahan accepted and appeared humble and sometimes awkward. He stuck to his values of endorsing the NY Giants and adamantly educated a FOX panel that the NYGiants would not turn their back on Plax after he shot himself.

Strahan's voice and delivery, even today IMO, is a bit so/so. He comes across as a guy reaching a bit beyond the viewers perceived limits yet it 's that honest effort which makes him likable. He also came out of nowhere as the media career appeared more like a guest who was trying to learn and just good enough to stick around until he became a regular.

On the flip side is Tiki. Forget the grooming, values, etc. He announces and speaks often about his future career while sporting a pretty blank resume. Sprints straight past a pre game and right to NBC sporting a sense of entitlement, arrogance and insulting the only good thing on his resume which was the NY Giants. Unlike Strahan, Tiki tried to appear more like a regular among real pros rather then a humble guest trying to learn. Add in his "opinion" of Coughlin in which was more insulting than complimentary and referring to Eli's leadership as a joke was a major turnoff for the listening audience. Tiki still doesn't understand why. His interview with Francesa was a disaster while, right or wrong, his attempted scolding of Gary Myers missed the mark and did more to expose Tiki as an undisciplined, unprofessional media wannabe with no credentials in the taxonomy as likiable, honest, trustworthy or ever humble.

Well to be fair, and if we're gonna rip him we owe him that much, without Tiki's week 17 performance I guess the Redskins game in which she went for 260 all-purpose yards in which she went for 260 all-purpose yards, including 235 on the ground and three touchdowns and win over Washington Coughlin in all likelihood is canned after 2006 season and the Giants don't win Super Bowl 42 the following year. I don't think Eli comes into his own and helps lead that team to a Super Bowl title if he is still on the team but it likely doesn't happen if not for his career finale the previous season. It's a bit of a strange situation actually. Don't get me wrong, I still think he's a self-important dick who's on the post football media relevance is dumping on his former team. But it's definitely one of those "hmmmm...I wonder...?" conversations. It's not like the guy do they have any gas left in the tank. He probably could've played another 3-4 seasons.

It's just really easy to forget stuff like that when he puts himself out there at such an asshole. Tiki Barber calling someone self-centered? That's like Greg Hardy calling someone unstable or Rueben Randle questioning someone's effort.

Morning buddy. Imho, there was no way TC with his strong ties to the organization AND how long he was pursued (since his BC days) would have been fired after just 3 years here..Yes, Mara did ask him to clean things up with the press (which he did), but I don't believe he was ever in danger at that point regardless of what was opined on here and in the media..

That's simply not true. And it was a decade ago and longer but at the time there were all kinds of articles about how Tiki was spending each off-season preparing for a post football career in broadcasting. Internships, classes, all that stuff. He prepared for so long that he even made it clear that he retired early to begin his broadcasting career. I'll try to dig around and find some of the articles some of the articles. He wasn't just offered a broadcasting gig out of the blue. No former player who goes into broadcasting is, but Tiki prepared far more than most.

Damn there's a lot of typos in that post. Too early to type, using the voice command. Never quite works right, does it haha?

Anyway, it's a debatable point. I could easily be wrong but as I remember it, going into that week 17 game the prevailing sentiment was if the Giants lost Coughlin was likely finished. Hopes were high after winning the division in 05, and the season was punctuated by some awful losses like the Jacksonville game, the huge blown 4th qtr lead to the Titans, and the Seattle debacle.
Don't EVER remind me of that '06 Titans' game..

Others outed him. I never understood what the big deal was. he retired. you wanted him to continue, and hold it against him for retiring with his body intact.
He (correctly) called out Strahan went Strahan was being a fucktard, but otherwise was not in the news for being a problem, when he was a player.

his tv (off the field) persona was lackluster, but Tiki the player was a helluva guy.

and let's face it, Eli is not exactly a great leader personality. he's a good QB, leader, not so much. It was asshole for Tiki to point it out, but he was desperate to make himself relevant in the TV world.

Yeah, meltdown is an apt word. At the time I had recently gotten my first good promotion at my first good post-college job and moved into a nice duplex. I was there maybe a week? I was so enraged that I charged out of the building swearing like an idiot and making an ass out of myself in front of my new neighbors.I got in my car, peeled out of the lot, and drove I don't know how many blocks before I realized I had been drinking all afternoon. I parked and walked home, probably about a half mile. Only time in my adult life I've drove drunk.
