NFT: Joakim Noah skips military dinner, cites anti-war stance

David in LA : 9/30/2016 3:42 pm
Quote:
"It's hard for me a little bit. I have a lot of respect for the kids who are out here fighting. But it's hard for me to understand why we have to go to war, why kids have to kill kids around the world," Noah said after Friday's practice. "So I have mixed feelings about being here. I'm very proud of this country. I love America but I just don't understand kids killing kids around the world."

Noah added: "At the end of the day, I'm not anti-troops. It's just not comfortable for me to see kids going out to war and coming back having seen what they've seen, having done what they've done. It's sad for me. It's sad for me because they're just sent out for things that I don't really want to get into it to be honest with you. It's hard for me."

Ok, I'm all for freedom of speech and expression, but Noah is coming off like a moron in this instance, when there are photos of him yukking it up with the President, who is actually more directly responsible for our foreign agendas than West Point.

the majority of those "kids" haven't done any fighting or any killing. It's just an awkward stance. One he's certainly well within his rights to take/make, he just comes across as bumbling in doing so.
of course he can do what he wants

I wish he had gone

if only because I think it's virtually impossible to go there and not have a better or different perspective of the country, the people who have fought for it, and just the richness of history. It is just a different place and one that most people react to on a visceral level.
The only reason I'd avoid West Point
pjcas18 : 9/30/2016 4:20 pm : link
is because in High School my hockey team played the West Point JV's every year at West Point, and we'd take a greayhound bus and that narrow winding road up the mountain to that campus is harrowing to someone who is afraid of heights. So many times I thought that bus was going over the cliff.

Plus I got hit so hard one year (maybe my sophomore year) I skated to the wrong bench. I could have sworn it was an actual tank on the ice, otherwise beautiful campus great atmosphere and I loved being there.

I do reiterate though I don't think anyone cared that Noah skipped this event.

The other thing is, sort of tangential to David's and Russ's points
Bill L : 9/30/2016 4:24 pm : link
is that, depending on where the country is wrt international stuff, as many or more of those "kids" will spend more time doing relief work in places like Haiti, building what ever the Corps of Engineers build, doing diplomacy, medicine, law, business, or even being political leaders than they do "the things they do" in the context of war.

I think that there is a better argument to be made that you are a much more, even an exponentially more, reflexive respondent on this site than anybody you reference. Anyone at all, really.

Good to see people once again getting the courage to speak their minds--regardless of who it offends.

All good if you're not an NBA fan, but FYI Noah (although he's dealt with some injury issues) is a very good player. So-so scorer but excellent defender & rebounder. DPOY in 2014 (?).

Not that that should or should not legitimize his stance, but he's most definitely not the hoops equivalent of a 2nd string quarterback.

I went there once to see Dave Matthews. Me and some buddies ate a bunch of mushrooms thinking it would be a normal concert. It was all cadets and their dates dressed up like prom. You couldn't even buy a bottle of water let alone any beer.

It was a bad trip but a beautiful campus.

if it's in conjunction with a west point get together, then, yeah, it's hypocritical.

if it's somewhere else, then the comparison need not apply as the POTUS is more than just C-I-C.

I met this guy on a plane last year who taught at West Point. Either History or English, I can't remember. But i said to him. "It must be great teaching at West Point because all the students must do the reading and being really disciplined." Nope. Slackers, just like everywhere else. Constantly on their phones etc . . . . I had to laugh. Shows we all have preconceptions.

You are kidding right? You are not allowed to offend anyone. That is why there are safe spaces, trigger warnings and political correctness. Controversy is not allowed on campus if your view doesn't meet the academic elite.
these are college age kids
fkap : 9/30/2016 4:51 pm : link
but, they should be more than just college kids. I don't begrudge anyone for finding the best career path, but the west point honor and the motivation should have a lot to do with patriotism and military service, not just getting a job.

I thought it was more recent, but it was several years ago at Bulls camp. Only reason I thought it was recent was the photo showed him and Rose in blue jerseys, so I assumed those were Knicks jerseys.

I agree. But I also see political correctness coming from the Right, not just the Left.

To me, old-fashioned courtesy should be the rule. If I know you come from a military family, I won't say anything against the military because that would just be rude and needlessly offensive. Ditto for comments about race, gender, sexual orientation etc. . .. If you are hanging out with your African American coworker, don't call the boss a "slavedriver." If you are hanging out with your female coworker, don't call somebody a "pussy" or a "twat." That's just politeness and consideration.

Plenty of people care, it's a massive issue right now. Atleast he did this on his own time, but that's where defending him stops. I don't agree with the message it sends but he's free to do what he wants. I'd have a problem if he did this during a Knicks game.

its just my own guess, but I think I have a better than even chance of being correct, that Noah frequently doesn't eat dinner with a West Point cadets at a Knick game. Don't get too mad.
I read the title and was a little rankled.

RC02XX : 10/2/2016 12:26 pm : link
He did miss out on what was probably a great experience with all of the traditions and history of those various halls at West Point. If nothing else, visiting such a storied institution is a treat for any history buff, but somehow I doubt he's much into history.

But seriously, so he didn't want to go, does it really matter for what reason? It's his choice.
If your message (or purpose) is unclear..
EricJ : 10/2/2016 3:00 pm : link
and as a result, you need to explain yourself and do a bit of damage control... then maybe your message or method of delivering it was not well thought out.
That's cool and all
feelflows : 10/2/2016 9:09 pm : link
but... Who the hell is this guy that anybody should give a crap? To me, it's the equivalent of my neighbor 4 doors down doing it...who???

Let people protest anything they want, it's their right. The fact that the media covers it is the confusing part.
