why Rene Rivera is getting the majority of the work at catcher rather than d'Arnaud? Is this for defense/comfort with starting pitchers? I know d'Arnaud has been a disappointment with his bat, but I would think d'Arnaud would still be the preference in terms of bat in the lineup, no? I understand their OPS difference is negligible. D'Arnaud does have a better K-rate, for instance.

Agree 100%. We know Rene Rivera sucks. He's always sucked. TDA sucks "right now". He's shown ability that would rival the best catchers in baseball in his past. I get R. Rivera catching Noah but I too wish TDA was getting more atbats late in the year. Oh well.
I and TC no longer have any confidence in TDA's ability to hit and
He's actually a positive DEF player this year even with the shoulder issues and he
's been much better since he's been back off the DL. He also had a higher CS% last year than R. Rivera does this year. Im not going to argue R. Rivera is a better defensive player but his bat is straight trash and there was a reason he was acquired off the scrap heap.
As lost and screwed up as TDA has been this year in less than half a season(never looked this bad in any other season) he STILL has a higher wRC+ than Rivera. That takes a special kind of suck. Well done Rivera.
offensively and defensively. . . when he's physically able to play.
He's a bum. Trade his ass this off-season.
And yes, we do need a catcher. I believe Wieters is a FA.
Yup. But I always look at it like if given a full lineup you are always going to have two hitters cold at minimum. Hedge your bets and acquire as many good hitters as possible so that the rest can carry you.
where Familia has said he doesn't like too much time off because he losing his good stuff. Some guys just don't pitch as well with too much rest and I'm sure at this point between what his body tells him it needs and Dan Warthen's guidance Collins is simply trying to keep him as sharp as he can for heading into the playoffs.
I'm real happy for him, that rough start had to be killing him.
Yup. We have a ridiculous surplus at 2B anyway with Reyes, Cabrera, TJ Rivera, Cecchini, Flores, KJ, possibly Neil Walker all in the mix there anyway next year. We really didn't need Herrera anymore as much as I liked him. Plus he fought shoulder issues all year.
Bruce has another year of control so we can spin him for talent in the offseason and it will be like we got an impact bat for the postseason run for free. Talk about genius.
if San Fran loses, the worst the mets can finish is in a 3 way tie. Thats if they lose the last 2 and both cards and giants win the last 2. In that case Mets would play Cards for top wild card spot and even if they lose that would than play SF for 2nd spot.
Of course no one saw 4/6's of the rotation going down. Or the two kids stepping in like this. Regardless if these two flameout and never are heard from ever again, they've both been a massive part in the Mets playing past Sunday this year.
Keep in mind, this is all after the Mets traded what was it, ten arms last year?
but otherwise a good night. Can't believe that this team might be drinking a little champagne tomorrow given all that's happened. They certainly deserve it and I hope they have a good time if they pull it off.
The competition for IF jobs next year is going to be something else. For 2B, SS and 3B you have Wright, Cabrera, Reyes, Flores, Rivera, Cecchini and Rosario will hopefully be putting a lot of pressure on these guys by mid-season (and that's assuming they don't bring Walker back). At 1B I'm tempted to say we should get a veteran backup (and pick up Duda's option) but even if not, Smith should hopefully be putting pressure there by mid-season too.
OF is crowded too. Z, if you're right about Bruce and we somehow get an asset for him, I'd be giddy. I've been super hard on him on these threads and would love to eat some crow if he can produce in the playoffs.
If the Mets can keep Cespedes and get a little bit of fucking luck with the pitchers (basically we just need at least 4 of Thor, DeGrom, Harvey, Matz, Wheeler and Gsellmen to be healthy and productive) the team should be up there with the Cubs and Dodgers next year.
Any chance you have the wins prediction thread from spring training still?
Ill take some time and go back and get them. Apparently, I didn't save the link this year. I know I had us at 95/96 wins but if you would have told me we would have lost 4/5ths of our rotations and just Duda (who I said was irreplaceable) I probably would have had us not winning 77. lol.
And there are many teams searching for it. Even if you put a lot of stock in corner OF defense (I don't) there are still AL teams that would likely be frothing to make him a DH.
33+ HR, 100 RBIS, wRC+ 110-ish. 29 years old.
A year of that is worth at least one good prospect (Herrera level or better). Has to be.
I dot know exactly where everything is going to shake out in the OF next year but I do think if Sandy spun Bruce it would be pretty genius.
And start the season with Nimmo and Conforto in AAA.
Cespedes, Bruce, Grandy, Lagares, Ruggiano?
Not my cup of tea. Conforto is the future and needs to play every day. He destroyed Vegas. Im fine with him going through a few more struggles in 2017 as long as it isn't as prolonged which I dont think it will be. To me, Granderson has proven capable in CF still so I leave him there and bridge him to Nimmo (who I think will play CO but maybe "some" CF eventually similar to Yelich) . So for me the OF is Cespedes, Granderson, and Conforto left to right and my bench is Lagares and Nimmo. Lagares starts in CF against lefties giving Grandy some rest and Nimmo backs up all three spots and is the first man up if a guy get's injured. Unfortunately, guys like De Aza and Ruggiano are going to have to move on. No room. Trade Bruce for a haul and sign Ces and I think the 5 OF is set.
We have 8 deserving starters for 5 spots. The bullpen is stacked and guys like Sewald should only make it better.
Really the ONLY spot you can really question anything is catcher and Im betting 80% of the teams in baseball would trade their catching situation for TDA/Plawecki, both who still have upside and are young.

I'd trust him for 5-6 innings in a postseason game
It was close enough to use Reed there. Would like to avoid Familia

Reed didn't have to pitch tonight.

Guess not. Hope we get a blowout tomorrow

That is an absolutely SPOT ON assessment of our minor league system right now, well said.
