so....how about that reverse WR option pass?

jnoble : 10/10/2016 11:02 pm
It didn't work and OBJ wisely didn't try and toss one into double coverage or up for grabs but when was the last time we saw a trick play like that? Not during the 12 years of Coughlin. We gotta go all the way back to Fassel to see a flea flicker or similar. Loved Coughlin, but never liked how much of tight-ass he was about calling trick plays.
It takes an extra man away

When they go into that formation/motion next time. Now the D can't over commit.
I don't like trick plays ...

IMHO - the potential for disaster is not worth the risk. If they start playing hard-nosed, discipline, and mistake free football ... a team (any team) would not need trick plays.

You are right about Coughlin though - not much of a gambler. : )

it was good to see creativity. we were in a bind and unable to beat the two high look, BM was looking for a spark. those plays are great as long as you dont get out of hand calling a ton of them
Actually
weaverpsu : 10/10/2016 11:19 pm : link
OBJ threw a pass his rookie year I believe. He launched it too with a perfect spiral. So, incorrect about Coughlin. I see nothing wrong with it except execution was a joke. A horriblesson missed block had a man in his face and in replay, the WR'S didn't sell it at all. They should have acted like it was a run. Lastly, if he was coached to throw ball away he saves about 6 yards. Terrible all the way around.
we tried the

same play against the titans 2 years ago and it almost worked, Reuben Randle couldn't get to it, OBJ has a cannon, i like the call. I only wish he threw it out of bounds instead of taking the loss of 6.

That's the thing ... if they (the trick play) is successful - it could result in momentum change, a score, or even a victory.
But, if they fail ... could be embarrassing (bad for morale/momentum) and dig a bigger hole for the team.
They lost 6 yards

does anyone remember the last time we tried a fake punt or FG?

J - I was thinking of that Raul Allegre fake field goal in the playoff game against San Fran ... ? I think it was them? : ) Other than that I can't think of anything that was ... at least meaningful?
Even that play...
EricJ : 10/11/2016 7:27 am : link
was poorly designed (one option for OBJ to throw to) and got blown up by the poor play of our O-line once again. They allowed penetration into the backfield.
They flubbed that one
mfsd : 10/11/2016 7:29 am : link
But it was one of a few plays where they finally got creative bc the usual stuff wasn't working - which was good to see

Loved the quick swing pass to OBJ out of the backfield

The trouble with a trick play like that is too many things need to go right for it to work

Yep, was going to post the same thing. OBJ couldn't even find enough space to get back to the LOS.

who apparently was the only receiver to go out on that play was triple covered, so, yeah, great design. Beckham draws too much attention on the field, wherever he is. A play like that might work better if they let Shepard run it, then use Beckham as an underneath decoy. Beckham draws attention. He has his own welcoming committee wherever he goes.

^^^^^^EXACTLY!!!!^^^^

I was like "Oh Finally they figured it out!!! That's it, keep the defense guessing, be aggressive, excellent!!!" ....I posted something about the Giants doing exactly this......I think this was the drive that Flowers killed with his 10 yard penalty. Then they went back into "don't lose the game mode" which is a game mode that loses about 75% of the time.

One of those "straight into the line" is going to bust wide open for a TD one of these days, it just HAS to, and probably w/Perkins.
Besides the fact that he should have thrown it out of bounds

I like the call. Would have been better of the OL could have blocked for a few more seconds.

amazes me how often that scenario happens. WR reverse and the WR cant figure out that if he throw the ball away he wont lose 7 yards

In 2011 weatherford had a fake punt. Tom tried to call it off but weatherford did it anyway. Weatherford made a mistake. That's the last time I remember.
Not sure if it was the best time

Eli was accomplishing much through the air. Odell is a freak - so putting the ball in his hands as much as possible is fine by me. It didn't work, but they should be trying stuff like that more often.

that was in New Orleans on a monday or sunday night. I think we were getting blown out anyway. I believe Weatherford had the freedom to call a fake if he had the right matchups. I also remember Tom blowing up Weatherford after it failed.
I was fine with trying it...
arcarsenal : 10/11/2016 11:07 am : link
But why he didn't realize that he could have just thrown it away is beyond me. I guess WR's aren't really of that mindset but it would have been good if someone reminded him before they ran it.
Unfortunately they didn't fool anyone on the play

I believe the play was blown up because Will Tye completely missed his block. Not that our OLINE was any good on Sunday. Another reason Mr. Tye should not be on an NFL roster.
cut Tye? some fans are such reactionaries

where is fatman when you need him?

Had Manning hit Tye ( wide effing open) with empty field and TD to go would you still say that?

That said, I think Will Tyes best position might be as a pass catching fullback.

and, to 'tye' this back into the thread, sometimes the simplest stuff is the 'trick play'...

VERY SIMPLE

Sometimes you look for a boost and you might as well go with a guy like OBJ who practices passing a ton.
The giants have attempted two reverse type plays
Old Dirty Beckham : 10/11/2016 11:54 am : link
one agianst minnesota that resulted in a penalty that began our push out of FG range on the opening drive.

The next time we lost five yards at midfield down 1 score against GB.

Both times they were stupid play calls.
The lack of trick plays
HomerJones45 : 10/11/2016 11:58 am : link
has doomed us for years. Trick plays are the hallmark of all dynasties. Lombardi was a big believer "Trick plays are the essence of success in this man's game", the HOF coach said. Chuck Noll was known for his addiction to trick plays "Can't live without 'em. I owe all my success to trick plays". Lil' Bill is the Chris Angel of trick plays "[mumble] yeah, [mumble] they're great" he remarked in an interview.

Some of you should be watching the fucking circus instead.

I would argue had Tye continued running he makes the catch. manning is throwing to a spot in downfield. Watch the play, Tye gets turned around to a degree, which is why he is stop being the pass.
Don't mind the call
bronxct1 : 10/11/2016 12:34 pm : link
I really don't mind taking the chance, it lost 6 yards but I blame that on OBJ not just tossing it out of bounds. He had plenty of time to see there wasn't anyone open and throw it away instead he tried to gain yards.
