NFT: Washington DC Help Needed !

EricJ : 10/15/2016 8:49 am
My daughter may be traveling to DC on a bus next weekend with a couple of friends. They would arrive into Union Station in DC. I have concerns about the DC area and have no idea whether this station or area is safe for her and her friends.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
Union station is the main transportation hub

In DC. It's on Capitol Hill. It's plenty safe. Where are they going from there?
It's a safe area

I wouldn't worry.
Eric, Union Station is fine

It's a modern, well-appointed station with shopping built in...think of a poor man's Grand Central Station. Ample ability for her to connect to her end destination by Metro from Union Station or to hail a cab in front. It's a stone's throw from the Capitol building and there are plenty of law enforcement personnel in the area. Some great restaurants also within walking distance.
Union Station is fine...

I stayed just a few blocks from there about a month ago. Where are they heading off from there?
They are going to the Washington Marriott

Wardman Park. 2660 Woodley Rd NW

How would you recommend they get to the hotel from there?
Union Station is as safe as any major place in DC

Any capital city is going to have crime - Since you are concerned I recommend that your daughter go to the taxi line in the front of the building to get a cab to her ultimate DC destination - please visit attached URL

I'll second the Uber. My daughter goes to school there and uses Uber all the time, including from Union Station.

Have them uber or cab. There are cabs sitting right out front. That would be their best bet. Woodley Park is a good area btw.
I'm gonna disagree with the other posters

Union Station is only 4 miles from Anacostia which is a high crime area. Lots of Murder Death Kills. I would make sure all your daughters & her friends are strapped. Something high capacity. You may want to consider body armor and tactical helmets as well.

And to be honest..I wouldn't take any chances. I'd hire a security team to escort them to their hotel. Find some ex-Blackwater guys who have seen Fallujah, etc so they're experienced if when shit hits the fan. They should have M16s at minimum and ideally 'nades, but I'm unsure the DC laws on small explosives, so check with your lawyer.

Maybe this is slightly paranoid, but we're talking about your daughter's safety. Tell her good luck (she'll need it).
The area around Union Station used to ...

... be frightening! That was quite some time ago. Just have her walk outside and get an Uber or a cab. Very safe. Also, tell her to enjoy the architecture and views of the Capitol. It's beautiful.
if the bus arrives

During normal hours, union station is busy and safe. They can also take the red line metro to woodly park station and the hotel is right there.

The hotel and station are in a safe area but personally I would have kids take uber everywhere and add an extra layer in terms on not having to ride trains, etc.

You're getting stinks.

I lived there 20 years, till 2 years ago.

No need to even leave Union S. There, get on Metro red line going NW toward Shady Grove. Get off at Woodley Park stop. Short walk uphill to Marriott Wardman. There is NO need for cab, uber. Woodley even safer than Union.
I used to live right next door to the Wardman Marriott

Woodley Park is a GREAT area. Take the Red Line Metro towards Shady Grove and get off at Woodley-Park/National Zoo/Adams Morgan.

In Woodley Park, there is a good diner called Open City, a great sushi place called Tono Sushi, and a good Irish Pub called Murphy's.

The zoo is right up the hill about 1/4 mile. Dupont Circle is one stop south and Cleveland Park is 1 stop north.
Thanks for the advice and comments everyone

Just have them tell everyone you know me. They'll look at the group like they're crazy, and they'll leave everyone alone.

What a DB post, even if sarcastic.
It's right by a congressional parking lot

Which is manned 24/7 with police and there are cameras EVERYWHERE, even where you don't think they are. Have no fear in that area at all, she'll be perfectly fine.

lol not exactly reality. Now if they ventured farther into SE then you could argue something. It's not Detroit or St Louis.
its plenty safe

DC is a great city. Just have them Uber, same as they would anywhere else. When they get in an Uber, have her screenshot the driver and text it to you.
