I thought one of football's cardinal rules was to stay away from the ball if the ball is punted that deep. Yet Harris fielded them multiple times today.
Is there something I am simply not understanding or is this poor decision-making on Harris' part?
Harris's job is to simultaneously judge where the ball will land, and the likelihood that the coverage will get to it before it goes over the goal line.

It is that simple. U put your feet on ten yardline and if it goes over your head you deal w result. It was like Ruben randle only worse

Agreed, I thought Harris did a good job with this today.
Harris has fumblitis and it's a big problem to have as a returner. But his football IQ and toughness are both positives for our special teams unit.
1. You catch it and get the ball there.
2. You muff it and give up ball inside the 10.
3. The ball bites and it is downed inside the 10, maybe at the goal line.
4. It bounces into end zone for touchback.

If you see the coverage closing in, and the ball lands inside the 10, you have to assume they'll have a great chance to down it near the goal line. Given that, you'd definitely choose to fair catch it at the 7.

Inexperienced returners might be taught to let it go over their heads at the 10. But the fact is, there's a significant difference between starting your drive on your 7, and starting your drive on your 1 or 2. Every QB/HC in the league would take the former over the latter.
