Alternatives would have been to (1) fly home, and get further away from London, setting themselves up for a 10.5 hour flight, or (2) find a place between Detroit and the east coast to practice for a week. That doesnt seem much better than doing the same in London, and you'd still have to adjust to the time at some point anyway.
they're not the first team to fly out immediately and try to acclimate for the entire week. Not sure what the 'stats' are on teams that do this though. Though it's likely to small a sample to be meaningful anyway.
Also, keep in mind they're a west coast team. That's an 8 hour time difference instead of a 5 hour difference and I think an 11 hour flight vs a 6-7 hour flight. Also, Giants have played several 4 pm and prime time games, so it's not like their bodies are 'tuned' to 1 pm starts.
Why is it insane? It gives all day Friday and all day Saturday to get adjusted to the time difference. I think it makes sense. For an East Coast team it's not much different flight time wise than a West Coast trip.
Jet lag is worse going East, but West Coast teams do it all the time.
that works for the NFL and he told me that before the schedules were finalized the rams had requested to play the pats or jets the week before the London game and were turned down .
Jet lag is no big deal, these guys are suppose to be elite athletes.
Now coming back, the jet lag is brutal, they have a bye for that very reason.
^^^^^^^
This - and I don't even think going west is that bad. 8 hrs in a chartered jet is not bad. It is not like there are 200 other people sitting on top of them.

Eh, DET to London isn't much longer than NY to London.
The supposed golden rule is 1 day to acclimate for every 1 hour time difference. Now I have found when vacationing or traveling for work on the way to almost anywhere it takes 2 days tops to acclimate, on the way back (regardless of East or West) I have had trouble getting my internal clock back together for over a week. I'm sure the team has experts or consultants that figure this stuff out for them.
I think they should be fine to fly out Thursday but I do think it is very smart of the Rams to fly out immediately, they don't have a whole lot to lose by doing so.
quite of bit of flight time not going back to LA, but so what. Has anyone ever considered Fisher some kind of super genius? The Giants will have plenty of time to get acclimated to the timezone.
Sucks for LA fans the most, who have to watch the game at 6 frickin 30.
of a decent distance, i can see us potentially doing this. But we didn't travel this week, so I don't see why this is so insane other than to try and pile on every single thing that happens to this team.
Was from DC to Italy. Took me 5 days before I got on track. Ruined half my trip. It was awful. But that was just my experience.
My parents lived in Hawaii for 13 years and I would visit a couple times a year. That's a 5-6 hour time difference but I never got jet lag because I would force myself to stay awake when I arrived and then go to bed at 10pm and I'd be fine the rest of the trip. Going east with a 5 hour difference was a whole other experience.

Hypocritical at it's best. Jet lag is no big deal going to the game yet brutal after the game. I guess they're elite athletes coming back.
You can't make it up.
You realize that the body is impacted differently by the time change being X hours 'ahead' vs X hours 'behind' right? There are actual scientific studies proving this...

Do you realize they play at 9:30am eastern time on Sunday? And any study is a probability which could be countered by a others study. Seen enough to realize everybody is different as many are altered by a simple placebo.
Jet lag is different for everyone, regardless of whether you're an athlete and how many time zones you travel. Some people adjust more easily than others. It was smart of the Rams to go when they did and I am surprised the Giants are traveling what I consider to be late. Hopefully they won't be sluggish on Sunday.
I went to Australia and back (twice), the flight is so long and covers a whole day so the jet lag effect isn't as bad IMO.
Other than I was flying for 40 hours and in layovers for 4 days because of all the missed connections set off by a chain reaction with flight one being delayed.
it took me every bit of a day or two to get acclimated. I flew from NJ to Scotland. Key is to keep your regular schedule regardless of time you get there and get to sleep at your regular hour. They'll be fine leaving on Thursday after practice. Issue I would have is practice on Friday or Saturday there.
Apparently the plane was a bit late getting in though. After the flight Fischer waited for the Captain to land the plane and then blindsided him with a cheap shot coming out of the cockpit.
Kroenke's ties to London (Arsenal, etc.) might be a factor too.
Setting up accommodations, practice facilities and other support services for a full week in London would figure to be easier - and cheaper - for the Rams than for most NFL teams.
not sure when the Rams flew to Detroit, say Friday.
As a frequent work traveler, who obviously does not have to go through the rigors and strenuous physical activity of an NFL game, I'd rather leave home Thursday and return Sunday no matter where I'm going then leave home Friday and return the following Sunday.
Road trips that long are exhausting. So sure, maybe the Rams are slightly better adjusted to the time change, though I think the Giants will adjust without issue, they'll be 10 days on the road before they play the Giants and that's not a positive IMO.
Didn't they have an interview with some team admin the last time
Every time I go to Europe it takes a couple of days to get adjusted to the time change. I fly to the West Coast at least five or six times every year and the jet lag is just not as bad as going to Europe. Not sure exactly why since it is only two or three more hours but Europe is just a lot harder for some reason.
I think it was smart for the Rams to fly out there early.
It seems like football players have weird shitting habits
And I'm not referring to Osi before anyone goes there
I've read players having to shit during games, before games, being constipated (probably due to the painkillers), etc. Siragusa has some funny stories. And for anyone who has seem trainspotting if you're on painkillers for a while, you know you get constipated, but when it wears off, you are going to have to take a dump urgently.
Or maybe he means for the field - where they have those porto-lets or even in the locker room bathrooms.
Just Pugh just tweeted on Friday I think (maybe Saturday) that he was sitting on the shitter so long the time-delay light sensors in the bathroom went off. and then he had enough time still on the shitter to tweet that he balled up some toilet paper and threw it out of the stall to activate the sensor again.
WTF?
Probably diet, drugs, and other factors impacting their metabolism. Just makes them need Charmin ultra soft instead of institutional toilet paper.
and most likely slept a little bit overnight. I'm sure the staff will have them either go straight to bed once they get to the hotel, sleep for a couple hours, then wake up as they normally would on a Monday morning in LA. Then they'll keep them up as much as possible today, back to sleep early, wake up early. They'll be acclimated by Tuesday and back to normal sleeping patterns that night.
RE: Good idea. So much for having the upper hand in that regard

yeah, probably high protein diets with little fiber and then they are constantly stressing their glutes
That's insane..

Why? It's not that much more than flying to LA/OAK/SD and yet they're still giving themselves at least an extra day to adjust.
Now coming back, the jet lag is brutal, they have a bye for that very reason.

The Rams are going early so they don't have to fly west and then further east, not because it takes a week to adjust to a time difference.
Sucks for LA fans the most, who have to watch the game at 6 frickin 30.
So they have possible Jet lag and recovery for Friday and have 24 hours to get accustomed to the time change.
Awesome - John Mara is really on top of things

I never pile on this team

Monday go to work.
of course I'm not playing football, but the jet lag is easily reversed in plenty of time for them to be ready for a Sunday game.
and going East is worse, but they have plenty of time.
I believe they made an informed decision, not just a haphazard one, so not sure why this is an issue for some.

they've played in London twice, once in 2009 and another time in 2012....both games they crushed their opponents (first the bucs and then the rams).
in both instances they worked at home and flew out on Thursday after practice.
so to giants2012 and BB56, if the giants are "insane" for flying out on Thursday, I'm fine with that given the company they keep.
As a frequent work traveler, who obviously does not have to go through the rigors and strenuous physical activity of an NFL game, I'd rather leave home Thursday and return Sunday no matter where I'm going then leave home Friday and return the following Sunday.
