Challenge Pass Interference?

Reale01 : 10/17/2016 11:16 am
This should be added to the things you can challenge based on the huge impact it can have. The standard required for a reversal can be higher if you like, but there are times when a replay clearly would show contact before the ball arrived - or after the ball arrived. Yesterday I believe the non call of PI vs Lewis in the endzone would have been reversed, the non call vs SS would have been upheld (not obvious enough) and the call vs DRC would have been reversed. The Seattle non call would have been reversed.

It would not take extra time as coaches would still have the same amount of challenges. Seems like a no brainer.
There is already a thread discussing this

And the premise of that thread is incorrect

Aren't you the guy that was putting everyone down yesterday for being frustrated with the lack of aggression prior to the game? Don't you think it should be OK for people to share their feelings here?

Talks about all penalties. This is just PI. There is a a much better rational for allowing PI challenge as it is very closely aligned with complete/incomplete pass that is already possible to challenge. People will say that you cannot judge how hard someone tugs on replay and I agree. Most of those will not be overturned. There are times when it is very clear that the wrong call was made. Let's do what we can to make that a little better.
I think there's a case

for very specific penalties. If you get hit before the ball gets there and your booth can clearly see it, throw the challenge. Holding penalty wipes out a huge run, but the booth shows the guy simply fell rather than pulled down, challenge. Roughing the passer due to a hit in the head and you clearly see him miss, challenge. These should count toward the number of coaches challenges.
Already the case,

and works just fine in the CFL.
I think it's long overdue

When you see the inconsistency across the league and the impact it may have and in a lot of cases does have why not. I don't think it's that unreasonable to have it up for review. For crying out loud Mike Pierera said in no uncertain terms he doesn't think the guy who made the call knows the difference between offensive and defensive pass interference.

And how many times have I listened to the Troy Aikmans of the world when doing color commentary say that was a bad call. I didn't see much there. You have to let them play and on and on. And yet the NFL lets this clown Dean Blandino guide how the game is officiated and interpret what constitutes a penalty.

It's obvious he has the officials so fucking confused they aren't even sure what is and isn't a penalty.
Weren't they nearly going to do it last year until

the NFL official union went all whinny about taking away their authority. These guys really think they are part of the game. Amazing.
you cannot make a judgement call reviewable

end of story
what does need to change
Tuckrule : 10/17/2016 12:51 pm : link
are illegal contact auto first downs. One of the dumbest rules ever created. 3rd an 25 illegal contact...5 yards and an auto first down. idiotic whoever figured that one out. Illegal contact should be a 5 yard penalty no auto first unless the foul occurs past the first down marker then it should be a spot foul just like PI. Thats my 2 cents
Can't do that
Beer Man : 10/17/2016 1:02 pm : link
it would open Pandora's box. What should of happened was that the Refs pow-wow on that call and at worst reverse it, at best call offensive pass interference. It didn't happen, and the refs should be held accountable by the NFL. We were lucky the team didn't lose because of it.

Tuck, almost all calls are judgement calls when you think about it so it is not the "end of story". As I said you cannot reverse everything since how hard someone pulled on a jersey or if contact impeded the play are subject to referees discretion in practice if not by rule. However there are cases where it is very clear that the contact was either early, late, or did or did not occur at all. It would not cause the reversal of the marginally bad call but would allow the egregiously bad calls to be overturned.

I don't think it would. You should be able to challenge PI. I would not include holding since you "could call it on every play" or unnecessary roughness because sometimes I think they call it on intent and not just "the letter of the law". I would limit it to PI. I would also consider not giving an automatic first down for defensive holding. Although I think I would tend towards keeping it as it is because it might occur more often if that change was made. The result would be a flag fest or receivers getting mugged.
Problem is

If people want to challenge the PI that wasn't called
