Good for Pearl Jam
UConn4523 : 10/18/2016 9:55 am : link
always felt Tupac was one of the more overrated rappers, but he gets in due to the pop-culture phenomenon that he was.
Bad Brains! Yes!
Greg from LI : 10/18/2016 9:55 am : link
Can't wait to see HR's induction speech....hahahaha
Bad Brains? I've never heard of them.
Crispino : 10/18/2016 9:57 am : link
ELO should be a slam dunk. Rest of the list is pretty pedestrian for me.
Clearly, they are running out of worthy nominees.
'Pac getting in would be awesome
Ceez2.0 : 10/18/2016 9:59 am : link
!
YES should definately get in.
giant24 : 10/18/2016 10:00 am : link
One of the most talented group of musicians ever put together. Too bad Chris Squire passed last year.
Yes Isn't In?
Trainmaster : 10/18/2016 10:03 am : link
What a travesty !!!
With the caveat that she wasn't Rock and Roll,
Mad Mike : 10/18/2016 10:05 am : link
which hardly matters since it's really the Music, except for country and jazz, Hall of Fame, how is Joan Baez not already in?
Bad Brains is an enormously influential hardcore band
Greg from LI : 10/18/2016 10:07 am : link
Unlike most hardcore bands, they could actually play their instruments well :)
Get it done, Depeche Mode!

Aren't most of her popular songs covers of other people's work or written by other people.

She's probably the female face of 70's political folk music, but musically I don't know she was all that deserving, was she?
ELO and Pearl Jam
Eli2Plax1017 : 10/18/2016 10:11 am : link
only two that should 100% be in
BAD F'N BRAINS !!!!
BIG FRED 1973 : 10/18/2016 10:15 am : link
I against I is one of my favorite albums of all time .Cant believe its 30 years old
Jimmy Buffett cant even get nomincated

Buffett is the musical equivalent of Raffi (the children's singer). (look him up if you have never heard him).

He's a no talent ass clown.

Maybe he Just Can't get Enough.

I don't know about the HOF, but the Zombies were a very talented band
Del Shofner : 10/18/2016 10:20 am : link
with some great songs - She's Not There, Time of the Season, etc. Probably too short-lived for the HOF though.
I voted for
Gap92 : 10/18/2016 10:23 am : link
Yes, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Bad Brains, and The Cars.
Criteria to be in the R&R HOF has changed so drastically over
TheMick7 : 10/18/2016 10:26 am : link
the years that they should simply call it the Music HOF. But from that list,my choices would be Pearl Jam,Yes,Joan Baez & MC5
Pretty insulting for Yes
Cruzin : 10/18/2016 10:34 am : link

to be included in that grouping. Proof positive that the RnR HoF isn't worth the time it took to read this thread.

J Geils is a great live band. Peter Wolfe could work a room like no other. Natefit used to live in his building, maybe he's lurking and could regale us with a tale or two.

god you don't have to do much to get nominated
gtt350 : 10/18/2016 10:38 am : link
what a watered down bunch. some i haven't heard of.
ELO and Pearl Jam are no brainers for me
Steve L : 10/18/2016 11:24 am : link
I could see Tupac and maybe Yes and Depeche Mode but other than that....
Bad Brains and MC5
Vanzetti : 10/18/2016 11:48 am : link
Let's put some real Rock'n'Roll in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Forget about this corporate, over-produced crap from the 70s
I think they should rename
Gman11 : 10/18/2016 11:58 am : link
it the Music Hall of Fame because there are too many people already in and nominated that clearly weren't "rock and roll."
Kick out the jams

I actually liked this line from Billy Corgan when he was giving the induction speech for Pink Floyd at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

Quote:
I grew up in the 70s and 80s. I'm roughly 28 years old. When people would say Pink Floyd, before I even heard a note, there was a certain reverence that surrounded this band. They were a strange anomaly in the 70s [which was] filled with this horrible, awful music, which some of you in this room are responsible for.
Buffet got incredibly rich...
manh george : 10/18/2016 12:58 pm : link
on the back of one very good song and a handful of mediocre ones. He got the bucks, doesn't deserve the award. Pass.

As far as Baez is concerned, she wasn't even much of a pathway toward modern R and R. She was a sweet voiced folk singer whose biggest claim to fame was sleeping with and helping introduce Bob Dylan to the world.
Btw, Jimmy Buffet is the third richest popular singer in the world...
manh george : 10/18/2016 12:59 pm : link
worth $400 million. That's a nice consolation prize.
I tickles me that
Mr. Bungle : 10/18/2016 1:14 pm : link
Bon Jovi is ignored year after year. Especially when I see some of these other nominees.
Still no Jethro Tull?

Yeah you have no idea what you're talking about.

This isn't a bad list, both in terms of influence and output. Bad Brains and Yes would be enough for me.
ELP
viggie : 10/18/2016 5:24 pm : link
should be in also. And Yes/ELO are definates also.
Yes & ELO...
Vinny from Danbury : 10/18/2016 6:06 pm : link
Absolutely pathetic Yes is not already in there. It's also a travesty that both Jethro Tull and ELP are not already in either. It would be nice to see some actual Rock bands to get in now and then, instead of so many of the non-rock, crap bands they've been allowing in for the last couple of decades. But then again the R&R HoF has always been a joke, so it's not surprising.

santacruzom : 10/18/2016 7:01 pm : link
You say that as if it's a bad thing.
Is Chaka Khan considered rock?
steve in ky : 10/18/2016 7:03 pm : link
.
Sometimes I get the impression
steve in ky : 10/18/2016 7:09 pm : link
that the R&R HOF will eventually include almost everyone of any account because music is so subjective and there really aren't any statistics that matter as there is in sports but more that time has simply passed since their carers began/ended

"Rock" refers to a more specific kind of music, and differs from "Rock & Roll" in it's connotation.
It's pretty often that people confuse Rock & Roll
eclipz928 : 10/18/2016 7:37 pm : link
with Rock, which is just a derivative of a much broader genre of music. Obviously the RRHOF does not differentiate the music genres of the artists it inducts as much any more, but for anyone who is still obsessed with the semantics here's the wikipedia description of the basic foundations of Rock & Roll:

a genre of popular music that originated and evolved in the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s,from African-American musical styles such as gospel, jazz, and rhythm and blues, with country . . . In the earliest rock and roll styles of the late 1940s and early 1950s, either the piano or saxophone was often the lead instrument, but these were generally replaced or supplemented by guitar in the middle to late 1950s. The beat is essentially a blues rhythm with an accentuated backbeat, the latter almost always provided by a snare drum.
I Against I...
trueblueinpw : 10/18/2016 9:13 pm : link
I loved listening to Bad Brains when I was a kid. I actually just ordered a copy of I Against I which for a while was really hard to find. Maybe it was reissued or something? Anyway, it sounds just a great today as it did 30 years ago but it seems really tame. When I was listening to that there were metal-heads who were like "whoa, that's too heavy, what's wrong with you?".

Re-ig-KNEE-tion!
Bon Jovi should be banned for life after that fucking commercial

Yup, Bon Jovi.

House of Suffering is pretty awesome too
Not unlike with the NFL
Overseer : 10/18/2016 11:39 pm : link
the bar for the R&R HoF has been set at a mostly accommodating level. The way I'd set the NFL... someone like Jim Kelly (although a great player), would not be HoF worthy. But given the current criteria, he's obviously in.

Here, only Pearl Jam sticks out as a true no brainer, and I like a lot of these artists. Jane's Addiction, e.g., just a solid band. But current critera warrants:

Yes
Tupac
The Cars
Bad Brains
Journey
ELO

--

Pearl Jam still makes good music (Riot Act sucked). But damn, their early stuff is just peak rock. Ten, Vitalogy, Vs, then up to the criminally underrated No Code.

I kinda agree with this. Diamonds and rust is just an exceptional tune but I don't know what else she really wrote.
Why. Isn't. Warren Zevon.

Bad Brains live back in the late 90s in a tiny club in Woodstock, NY (the semi-famous Joyous Lake, which I believe is no longer in business.) They were playing under the name Soul Brains because of a legal battle with their former management company but it was the original line-up. They played all of the hardcore stuff in the beginning and then transition to their newer, more reggae-sounding catalog. Such an awesome experience. My then gf now wife's mother's boyfriend at the time played bass for the opening band. He was supposed to bring us backstage to meet the Brains but it never worked out. I later found out that he felt weird bringing us back because all of the pot smoking going on (and we were only 18 or 19 at the time.)
I saw them during the Soul Brains period too
Greg from LI : 10/19/2016 11:56 am : link
I'd love to see them again but they don't tour much lately. HR and Dr Know have both been in poor health.
