Tavarres King time...

EricJ : 10/19/2016 8:58 am
other than OBJ, he was our best WR in pre-season. The guy has speed and can run with the ball after the catch. There is a lot of talk about Cruz and whether he can still get it done. We need to give this guy a shot.

Meanwhile, attached is a link to one of his TDs in pre season. Look closely at this play. Very similar to the one that OBJ scored on at the end of the game on Sunday.

Over Cruz nor should they. Victor was pretty huge the first two weeks of the season.

has mainly been among fans, I believe.

The offensive line needs to do its job, and everything else will fall into place.
I was wondering

how Roger Lewis passed King on the depth chart.

Special teams?

Seemed like King would be "next man up" in the WR hierarchy.

He wasn't even active last week

Yes - special teams is why Lewis was active and King was inactive v Baltimore. Now, after Lewis' receiving performance, the gap between the two could be even wider.
Keep in mind too
pjcas18 : 10/19/2016 9:17 am : link
that Lewis while a UDFA is just 22 and King, is 26 and a practice squad veteran on his 5th team.

I liked King in PS too, but Lewis could be more what the Giants need and still be learning.

^This. King deserves to be on the team, but Lewis seems to have moved ahead of him on the depth chart.

The coaching staff's assessment of King
ColHowPepper : 10/19/2016 9:54 am : link
vs. Lewis and their places on the depth chart may be influenced by how they view the strengths and types of players they are. That is to say if they view King as a player similar to VC, and Cruz is (knock wood) healthy and productive, coaches may opt to have the different kind of receiver that Lewis is, bigger, stronger, taller, to have diversity of player types. I say this mindful of the nice game King had in exhibition with the end around he took for a score, which I think came from the slot position, which VC used to inhabit before SS. King may also have a nice catch on the outside that game. But Lewis gives you different matches.

in the practices i saw at camp eli just seemed very comfortable going to lewis. he was getting a lot of burn with the 1's (over Cruz)

same was true of david tyree - eli just liked throwing to him. he's a gamer

are nearly physical clones.

are you saying their styles are different?

King: 6'0 190 lbs, 4.47 40 at his pro day (in 2013)
Lewis: 6'0 196 lbs 4.46 40 at his pro day

Wow, if those are accurate, I stand corrected; my sense and visual impression were that Lewis a couple inches taller and ~10 lbs heavier.
in fact
ColHowPepper : 10/19/2016 10:05 am : link
Roster has King 1" taller and 4 lbs heavier. I guess I was swayed by reportage that Lewis offered the "big receiver" option the team needed, so never mind (:

I got them from pro-football-references, so who knows; they're probably close to accurate.

I remember being surprised Darius Powe was cut because he presented a size mismatch with most CB's and it was something the Giants just lacked in red zone.

His time has come and gone
Mike in Long Beach : 10/19/2016 10:07 am : link
Roger Lewis is the go to option from that level of WR.
I don't see how King gets a shirt in London.
Big Blue Blogger : 10/19/2016 10:18 am : link
Likely inactives:
QB Johnson
WR King
OT Newhouse (might return)
LB Skinner
FS Thompson
CB Apple
DE Okwara or DT Thomas or another DB

A sixth wide receiver seems like a pretty low priority. As long as the other five are healthy, King doesn't really have a path to the active list unless there are only 46 able bodies (plus Johnson) available.
It seems that

Agree, not to mention he was going against 2nd & 3rd stringers in the preseason. Looking at the season so far, King has done very little in the games that count where he was active. Lewis on the other hand has a TD, and could've had a second had he not been interfered with.

Understandable. There might only be 6lbs difference between them but Lewis' upper body does look noticeably bigger.

There is this thing called practice. And in practice perhaps against the number 1 defense Lewis has played better...you know..PRACTICE

You realize that Lewis surpassed king on the depth chart right. He was a healthy scratch this Sunday
I don't know that you can read too much into some of this
UberAlias : 10/20/2016 8:15 am : link
This team has 3 WRs who are entrenched as starters at this point. Unless one of them gets hurt, decisions on the 4th guy are likely to be a consideration of special teams since that's their most likely route onto the field.

Personally, I would like to see either Lewis or King get some more looks at WR. If Lewis' TD is any indication, there is only upside to doing this -I really doubt we should expect significant dropoff and the upside remains to be seen.

I would strongly consider getting them in there with more 4 WR sets. Would there really be any objections to seeing more of Lewis and King and less of our TEs? They don't run the ball well and our TEs are not at all dynamic. I'd like to see how many teams can match a #4 CB on either of these guys.
I'd like to see more 4 WR sets
GuzzaBlue : 10/20/2016 9:44 am : link
Definitely also like to see more of Lewis rather than King. King is a nice player, but he's a legit journeyman. There is a reason this is his 4th/5th team and preseason play has to be taken with a grain of salt. Lewis on the other hand seems like a nice UDFA talent. He runs good routes and has decent hands. Not sure if teams will be able to cover 4 WR spread. With TE's that can' block or run the seams very well, it's a waste to have them on the field most plays.

Spread the defense with 4 WR and go no huddle. Force them to bring 6 DB's on the field and see if that can either open up the running game or create mismatches. A TE only brings an extra man in the box, who isn't being blocked well anyway.
