Nintendo has been pretty quiet the last few years, but they've announced the NES Mini and Super Mario iOS this fall, and now they will be revealing a brand new game console tomorrow morning.
As I've gotten older, I play less and less games and my xbox has been collecting dust for almost a year now... but I will always have a soft spot for Nintendo games.
That's what my friend at square told me 5 years ago. Consoles aren't going anywhere, people want high quality games with no interruption. Can't get either on a cell phone. And once they get games fluidly on the cloud, you will need high speed internet to player bigger and better games.
NX is interesting since its on the go, but it's no cell phone.
On another note, love Nintendo. Grew up on it. But they've been a tremendously lucky company. The Gameboy was their version of the Miata and, if it werent for Pokémon, they might have gone the way of Sega; just producing titles and out of the console business.
Now they're like the Apple of the video game world. They have a vision, a very specific way of doing things & are always trying to innovate. Unfortunately, they don't have Apple's clout. So it's not surprising they allowed their franchise mascot to appear on mobile devices. Actually, what does surprise me is that Super Mario Run wasn't made an iOS exclusive. Which makes me wonder...Apple once created a complete failure of a video game console in the Pippin. Nintendo's greatest creation was a handheld console. I'd be willing to bet a partnership between them on some kind of system is not too far away.
Still looking forward to seeing what they have to say about it. For all the ways Nintendo manages to screw up when it comes to consoles, they still make some of the best games around. Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze were some of my favorite recent games.
(Every now and then they get a watered down Call of Duty and Ubisoft is usually there at launch before jumping off).

Yeah, but nobody who buys a Nintendo console is looking for games like those. Don't get me wrong - it would be nice if Nintendo would make a true competitor to Sony and Microsoft platforms, but that's not the niche they're trying to fill, or really what their customers are looking for.
I do agree that the price point here might do them in, only because it's so close to the other two. Had it been less expensive, it would have been the typical Nintendo type platform; you spend it for the Nintendo games only, and get one of the others if you're looking for more gaming.
You might be right. Personally, I prefer console games, but my son spends more time playing games on his iPod than he does on his XB1.
I was lining that up as a Christmas present for my youngest because I was eager to play that.

Yes. I'm sure one of my friends will get it. I'd like to check it out, but I heard the cord is a problem, super short for some reason. Not sure if that's still the case.

I was talking about this thing coming out in November.

Yeah, its a cool idea. Apparently the cords are extremely short but you can use a Wii controller on it, but that takes away from the nostalgia of the original controller. No idea why they didn't just make it a 6+ foot cord.
I've been looking to get a portable device for a while but probably going to hold off on getting a DS now. Why spend the $175 on it when I can hold off and get this?

UConn - where would you trade in? Gamestop? I've never traded in a system because the value has always been microscope, so curious if you have had a different experience.
Can you trade in regular Wii's? No one uses mine anymore.
That would be awesome actually. I was hoping it would be $399 or under but rumors had it at PS4/Xbox 1 launch prices.

you'd get $90 for one at Gamestop. Not great, but they may run a promotion specifically for Switch so i'm going to be on the lookout for that. My Wii U collects dust. Was playing Xenobalde Chronicles on it, but I'd part with the system for a few months if I can get over $100 in credit for it. I think I paid around $220 for it so its not that bad.

Yeah, looks like you'd get $20.

Better off buying a moded xbox for 150. I Have one and it has 14000 games on it.
Or maybe I just really want to be able to download and play Mario Cart from my PS4.

the one that will come pre-loaded with 30 games like Donkey Kong, Mario Bros, etc?

Is the moded xbox portable? I was thinking the kids could use this Nintendo device on car trips and things too.
Its going to be game of the decade type quality, IMO. Its going to run on Wii U and Switch, the question will be how much of a difference in quality between the two. Either way, its one of my most anticipated games of all time, the depth and scale simply look unreal.
Check out those army man climbers on the wall. Those things are awesome. Found em on Amazon.

Anyway, I say great job Nintendo. Smart that they're choosing to fish in a different pond from Sony/MSFT. All about 3rd party support (despite Nintendo's unmatched 1st part shit) and I was skeptical until I saw the companies they're getting on board.
