NFT: Andrew Miller

I don't know anything about minor league prospects, but whoever the Yankees got for Miller better turn out to be an all-star! What an amazing job Miller has done this postseason for Cleveland; nothing short of Mariano-esque.
The Consequence!

The whole point is that

we wouldn't be in the playoffs to use him. It was a win win trade.

Bingo. What good was having that bullpen if we weren't scoring runs and winning games? It was the right move and the Yankees are a much better team for it.

Well put. A closer is a finishing touch. We don't even have the foundation.

I absolutely agree.

Miller seems like a good guy with a great attitude, and I'm glad he's been delivering for Cleveland like he has. I just hope the Yankees' compensation works out equally well!
How old is he?
steve in ky : 10/19/2016 9:30 pm : link
No sense keeping a talent around if he will be too old to help you once you finish rebuilding for the future when he could instead help bring back prospects to assist in that process.
31 I think
Greg from LI : 10/19/2016 9:31 pm : link
.
Well at 31 it makes perfect sense to move him for prospects
steve in ky : 10/19/2016 9:34 pm : link
That he is playing well in the playoffs doesn't negate that.

Smart move by the Yankees
He'll be on decline while
Stan in LA : 10/20/2016 12:32 am : link
The prospects the Yanks will be all stars.

What don't you get about that?

I love Miller, absolutely love the guy
Stu11 : 10/20/2016 8:44 am : link
but are we going to have a thread about this every time the godamn guy pitches???
yes
Greg from LI : 10/20/2016 8:45 am : link
because some people can't see the forest for the trees, and will grumble about the trade.
Of course, because this could be the Yankees!
jcn56 : 10/20/2016 8:48 am : link
Neglecting, obviously, the fact that they wouldn't have made the playoffs in the first place.
BTW, Gleyber Torres is killing it in Arizona
Greg from LI : 10/20/2016 8:52 am : link
7-17 with 2 homers, 2 doubles, 4 BB, 4 RBI, and 4 runs
Seeing the quality of the pitching in the playoffs
mfsd : 10/20/2016 8:52 am : link
so far makes it clear that while we had a nice run this year, the Yanks are more than just one reliever, however dominant, from being a legit World Series contender

And even if it WERE the Yankees, Miller loses much of his value when Pineda gives up 5 runs in 6 innings.

I wouldn't bet the farm on that. In baseball Prospects are just that until they prove they can do it on the big stage. The Yanks have some highly promising prospects in their system, but for every Gary Sanchez and Ron Guidry, there are probably 20 Kevin Maas and 20 Brien Taylors.
Kevin Maas was never a highly touted prospect
Greg from LI : 10/20/2016 8:56 am : link
And Brien Taylor isn't the best example since he failed not because of performance but because he shredded his shoulder in a backyard brawl.
stupid premise.Miller skill is wasted on this Yankee team
Victor in CT : 10/20/2016 9:07 am : link
they weren't going anywhere. The Yanks did the right thing.
After trading Miller, Chapman, and Beltran
pjcas18 : 10/20/2016 9:09 am : link
the Yankees farm system went from top half (maybe top 12 based on who you go by) to #2 in baseball.

The deadline deals were a no-brainer.

I didn't understand the Clippard acquisition, but it's was a small move, either way the Yankees long-term and short-term improved within that 6 day period.

It's nice
kash94 : 10/20/2016 9:42 am : link
that Miller is getting some prime time and recognition on a national stage. He deserves it
Agree
mdthedream : 10/20/2016 10:28 am : link
Yanks need to rebuild Miller was not going to be in playoffs if we didn't trade him. So what if the Indians win.
OP Here
GruningsOnTheHill : 10/20/2016 10:48 am : link
I think my post was misconstrued; I think that the Yankees made an excellent decision in trading Miller, as the team is too far off from contending. In light of how well he's doing, I hope the prospects turn into perennial all-stars.

This article from today's NYP echoes my sentiments...

If you want to split hairs, fine. The point still stands.
This is silly

You have to give to get, and you have to give something valuable to get something valuable...
Andrew Miller was great before the Yankees traded him -
whozzat : 10/20/2016 7:52 pm : link
the fact that some people have only realized it now speaks volumes...

And, questions of ignorance aside, it is interesting how a player who has some degree of success for a winning team is perceived as more valuable/better/whatever than one who does it for a lousy team - even in something that's largely individual and stat-measurable like closing games.
Certainly NFL pro bowl rosters reflect it every year.

nobody ever said he wasn't great here. what was said is that at this stage of the team's development it was the right move to trade him for futures.
I woiuld love to see Indians vs. Cubs

Miller vs. Chapman. Battle of the trade deadline Yankees.
