No busted coverage -- A overlooked defensive positive

giantfan2000 : 10/20/2016 11:50 am
While we are not getting sacks or turnovers this year like we have last year
One positive has been the lack of busted coverages this year in the secondary.

The past few years too many times you would see an opponents receiver
catching the ball with no Giants around him .

for example in both long completions this past weekend by Ravens ,at least there was Giant around them . the first one was an excellent adjustment by WR to make a good play between 2 Giant Defenders

the second long pass play - the Ravens WR got a step on Jenkins - but Jenkins still managed to prevent the TD.

This is true

We are making teams earn their points.
Look, nobody likes to get beat deep but Jenkins did.

The real key was he got his man down before he got into the end zone. If I recall correctly he may have also been flagged for a personal foul as well (facemask?). Obviously not ideal, but there are some "good" penalties to take if it saves a score.

The Casillas play on fourth down was clearly huge, but Jenkins was able to at least make up for getting beat by forcing the Ravens to line up again...

typically making teams earn their points can lead to turnovers as teams force the issue. the defense hasnt been the problem this year, if we can get some sort of run game going, cut out the dumb penalties and give eli time the giants arent a bad team.
Agree

I guess we have had a few underneath routes that were not
covered well . Have not seen somebody downfield with no
one near them . Nothing where your like WTF was that .
Rarely do you see too many crazy mismatches either .
It's especially positive

given the injuries to the safeties + lack of pass rush. The defense hasn't been lights out by any means but considering the injuries + time on the field due to the poor offense, they've done their part.

They're pretty much middle of the pack in every main defensive category. If the offense can go back to 2014+2015 form, they could be in good shape.
The defense has been improved...

especially our run defense. It feels like we allow too many 3rd down conversions through the air. The stats may show otherwise

I think Collins was way late getting over on that play.
And just wait til we get D. Thompson back

at FS. Adams has done well filling in but D.T.'s has such good instincts and covers a lot of ground in the back.

Giants have the 10th worst opponent's third down conversion % so a little bit below average. The number improved a lot after last week
No matter how good your defense is

You will always give up some deep balls through out the year.

But compared to last year's swiss cheese defense, this years unit is head and shoulders better. We were historically bad, but the improvement is night and day.
Whoa...

Never saw a tight end more open than in the Wash. game. And on radio Banks was calling it. Everyone in the house knew where we were going and the man looked like he had a bad case of B.O.
Same in the Minny game.
I need to see more before I think our problem is cured - though overall I really like this defense and thinks it's going to get better right up to dominant.
Gotta get Hankins going though and then I even like the matchups against Dallas.
we were getting sacks and turnovers

That play was the most underrated of the day. Jenkins gets beat for a 60+ yard pass RIGHT after Odell's first long TD. It would be one of those tit for tat drives if he didn't get him down. The penalty stopped the TD and put the Ravens half the distance to the goal from the 6 to the 3. Four plays (with great red zone run D play) and a huge tackle by Casillas later, no points were surrendered on the drive. It went from Beckham's huge TD, to a long pass give up, to huge stop that netted 7 points. That penalty saved 7 points and the game.
