In a lawsuit filed in United States District Court last Friday, ex-Virginia receiver Aidan Howard alleges that the football program promoted a culture of “bullying, abuse, harassment, and discrimination,” one which forced him into a staged fight with another player that left him with a broken eye socket.

In addition to the fighting and the bullying, Howard alleges that freshmen were forced to participate in “wrestling matches while naked or partially naked.”
We'll see what happens. The last time there was a sensational accusation at UVA, it didn't hold up very well. I don't know what happened, and neither do you. Let's see what facts emerge.
I will say two things - first, Marques Hagans has been in the program for a long time under three coaches, as a player and as an assistant. His reputation is spotless. Canaan Severin just said that Hagans treated his wideouts like they were his own sons. He coached for years under London and, whatever failings London had as a coach, he's universally admired as a good man of integrity. No way would he have retained Hagans for years if this were going on then. I find it exceedingly difficult to believe that Hagans did anything wrong. I can't say that for the new staff because I don't know them.
Secondly, a friend of a friend has a son on the team. Said son says he has never seen anything like this. The staff works the players hard in a Bear Bryant sort of way (players that screw up or break rules get loads of punishment exercises) but nothing like the hazing described in the suit.
Like I usually say, I'll wait for the facts to come out before drawing any conclusions.
The "bullying" is fucking laughable. He had trouble learning the playbook, so other receivers called him dumb or stupid or retarded. OH NOES!!!!! Honestly couldn't give a shit less about that one.
The staged fighting is concerning. If true, then a lot of people are getting shitcanned, but again I'll wait for some kind of corroboration. He claims the entire team witnessed it, so finding a supporting witness should be easy if this is true.
Also, if any of the lawyers here want to take a look at the complaint Â
is indeed scum. There's no doubt about that. Always have been, always will be. Though I don't hate Fuentes yet. Beemer and his goiter - plenty of hate there. Great to see the Cuse chop their fuckin nuts off again in the Dome last week.

Giants are to Jets as Virginia Tech is to Virginia
More like Jets are to Browns as VPISU is to Virginia. They don't win shit, either, they just beat us. In football, anyway. They're a doormat in most other sports. Tech is in a very exclusive club of DI schools that have never won a national championship in anything, ever.
Being completely honest, I'm usually ok with hazing Â
in some fashions, I do think it helps to build camaraderie and humility, but when it gets sexual and potentially fatal then you're crossing a line.
I played high school and college sports and there was hazing, mostly alcohol related, heads shaved, pecking order stuff (freshman clean up the pucks, get water last, worst seats on the bus, etc.)
but nothing sexual, I don't get that mentality to want to force teammates to do anything sexual or degrading THAT way. degrading other ways sure like wearing ugly clothes or smelly equipment, but not to this level.
Giants are to Jets as Virginia Tech is to Virginia
Virginia Tech has dominated us in football though they have been mediocre lately as well. But this comparison doesn't make any sense, considering the only team national championship Virginia Tech has ever won in any sport was once in bass fishing and UVA has 24 (and the most men's championships in the ACC).

One of my teammates got carted off in Blacksburg and their fans were throwing beer bottles at the ambulance and screaming racist shit at our bench. They're scum.

Not one issue or athlete defines an athletics program. And as Greg said, this allegation seems to have holes. But Greg likes to think people who go to Virginia Tech are idiots.
When it comes to athletics, Virginia Tech has not won a team championship. Valid argument and something UVa. fans love to point out. But VT should be respected. Unless you're thinking about the late 80s, before Beamer came in - I'm pretty sure any reasonable person would see a football program that has always tried to do things the right way. Sometimes you can do things the right way and still have shitty people wind up playing football for you - or tennis or track or volleyball, for that matter. But Beamer was a great person and built a consistently competitive program while abstaining from violations many coaches were apart of at other schools.
Meanwhile, in Charlottesville - there's never a good program, nobody's in the stands and the program's under investigation for hazing. Go figure.
As for academics, I don't think you'll hear anyone from VT argue... UVa. is a fantastic school. But Virginia Tech = pretty damn good school, too.
US News & World Report rankings:
National Universities: UVa is #24, VT is #74 of 310 schools
Public Schools: UVa is #2, VT is #27 of 133 schools
Undergrad Engineering Programs: VT is #16, UVa. is #32 of 205 schools
Princeton Review:
Quality of Life: VT is #1, UVa. is unranked in Top-20 schools
Best Alumni Network: VT is #10, UVa. is #11 in Top-25 schools
Academic Rating: UVa. is 85, VT is 77
Professors Interesting Rating: Both schools score 77
Professors Accessible Rating: VT scores 83, UVa. scores 77

On the other hand, no one from UVA has ever hired a plane to tow a mocking banner over a Tek bowl game. I haven't forgotten your band writing BLANKET and ARMPIT, the stupid aliases for the nonexistent Rolling Stone fratboys, on their instruments during our game in Cassell last year, either.

Sorry pal, but...
STOP BULLYING, MAN!
Greg is a UVA fan and hates VT (hate might not be a strong enough word).
Come on, man!
It really didn't go over most people's heads.
Giants are to Jets as Virginia Tech is to Virginia

Of naming Virginia Tech in the title when in fact it's about UVA. Based on the comments in the thread, it pretty much went over everybody's head.

You act like UVA doesn't have any bad eggs. They surely do, but keep your blinders on.
And I apologize, the spelling comment wasn't meant to disparage VT, but rather anyone that could come up with such a vile banner.
Well of course. What else could we expect? Trash.
