Single high on the 4th and 1?

bignygfan : 10/20/2016 7:19 pm
I was reviewing the game from last week and with all the talk of cover-2 and not seeing single high for our offense I was just wondering what the consensus is on the way the Ravens defended that last Beckham score.

One one hand for them, the worst thing happened so it looks like playing single high was a mistake since even a first down at that part of the field and no TD keeps them ahead for the time being. On the other hand, on 4th and 1, you have to defend the sticks even though they had to know Eli was licking his chops to see that.

I respect the fact they played to win on that play and I say they did the right thing and botched the execution.

What say all you?
can't comment on the one play

but if Cover 2 is the known defense that the Giants O couldn't figure out for weeks, why go away from it? As a Raven's fan, I would be livid.

Reminds me of last year? or the year before? Teams were defeating the Eagles by employing the same defensive strategy...then we face them, and don't follow suit. Needless to say, we lost that game.
They were selling out

On the run for 4 and 1 so it makes sense.
It was a busted play

None of the Lbers picked up the TE, who was wide open about five yards beyond the LOS right over the middle.

The safety moved up to cover the TE and that's why he was not there to give help on Beckham. Single deep had nothing to do with it.

If the safety stays back, Eli lobs the ball for an easy five yard completion and first down.
I gave a detailed explanation of this in a thread on Monday...

Cover 2 wouldn't work because we had 3 wide and it was 4th and 1. If they studied film they would have been betting we would run. The safety crept up to only 7 yards deep at the snap because he had the TE assignment. The TE was on the inside and he ran an out which took the safety out of the middle too.

Yesterday, I posted a thread about King and said that I would like to see him get more action. In that thread, I also posted a link to a play that we ran with King during pre-season. It was almost an identical play. That time King was the WR and he also scored on the long play.
What I forgot to mention...

is if we had ANY kind of running game at all, we would see single high safeties more often. The fact that our O-line is getting stuffed by the front 4 means the defense can sit two safeties back and force us to go with short throws.
A cover 2 defense is designed to eliminate the deep ball,

Keep the receivers in front of you and all rally to the ball to punish the pass catcher. It really isn't a great 4th and 1 defense. A lot of teams run on 4th and 1. Why have only seven in the box to defend against that? It makes no sense.

were not in cover 2 as it was 4th and one....expected a run. Give the qb credit spotting the coverage and taking the gamble.

It's not some special play the Giants keep secret, it's a slant route.

basic football play. 2 slants on the other side. Slant and drag by the tight end and weddle clipped the corner. Nothing that special
Here's an excellent breakdown

of OBJ's day, including the 4th and 1 play. The All-22 looks really make you see the game in another light when you break down what's actually happening from play to play. You realize how one successful play is really set up from several other plays earlier in the game.

Hmmm, a couple of people have posted this and I respectfully disagree. The cover 2 sits 2 safeties back deep to defend the deep pass, but that does not mean it is a defense specifically designed to take away the deep pass. It allows the CBs more freedom to play the run and short passing game as they know they have deep help from the 2 safeties. I would actually say it is more to the benefit of putting more players in coverage against short and mid range passes. It works specifically very well, when A) You are not threatened by the run and B) Not threatened by TEs. I cannot say what Baltimore specifically ran defensively that play against OBJ, but it's logical they were in some for of Cover 2, because as stated by someone else the Safety on that side of the field had to make a decision to help against OBJ or cover the TE. He covered the TE and left OBJ one on one.... and the Giants hit pay dirt.
