NFT: Movies -- watched a movie called "Bone Tomahawk" last night

djm : 10/21/2016 11:57 am
I never heard of this movie. Stars Kurt Russel and Patrick Wilson, it's a western. How the hell did I miss this one? A very good western with Kurt Russell? Sign me up. Made in 2015. Directed by a guy I never heard of, S. Craig Zahler.

7.1 on IMDB. I thoroughly enjoyed it. If I hadn't heard of it I suspect many of you didn't as well. Be warned it is not for the feint of heart but it's damn good. I don't want to say anything else. Don't even read the synopsis or reviews as it gives away the plot.

distribution what it is nowadays quite a few "I had never heard of it but caught it on tv and was good" movies are coming out/slipping by peoples radars. I suspect we will see a time where "good" movies are produced directly for TV.
also stars Matthew Fox from Lost

and one of my favorite actors, Richard Jenkins who nails his role as usual.

Sneaky good movie that flew under the radar.

Now that I keep reading it says it was released in the UK in February of 2016. Limited release in the US. Budget of 1.8 million? IS that even possible?

Any case, see it.
watched it based on the rec of someone here

So true. At least we have the internet to scour the movie catalog. I only stumbled upon this one by accident.
Thanks...

I always like a good western - how did you watch it? Wondering if it's on a streaming service or Blu-Ray, etc.

Spoiler****

The last 45 is brutal I turned my head away during one scene but I felt it was necessary or germane to the movie's plot. It wasn't just gratuitous violence.

You had to know it was going to get pretty hairy. The movie wasn't trying to trick anyone.

Thanks for the rec. easy to miss some of these smaller budget movies that can be very enjoyable.
I thought it would have been much better

if you like westerns, but 'good' is a subjective term.

it's certainly out of the ordinary, and that elevates it a few notches IMO. but it has a campy/hokey element to it, so it depends on what your definition of good is.

it's a well done B movie more or less on par with Cowboys and Aliens.
I felt it started off really really slow...

but its worth watching through to the end. Pretty good movie.
Yeah don't go in expecting true grit or anything

BUT it's a solid effort. Anytime an unknown Kurt Russell movie gets a 7 or above on IMDb it's worth noting in my book.
