Am I the only one excited about Robbie Gould?

Mike in Long Beach : 10/21/2016 3:53 pm
This isn't another Josh Brown debate... just something about our current football team.

Gould is:

- The leading scorer in Bears history (1,118 points)
- The leader for most field goals in one season (33) in Bears history (2015)
- The Bears' leader for most consecutive 50+ yard field goals made (11 straight in 2013)
- The record holder for longest field goal in Bears history (58 yards in 2013)

- The 9th most accurate kicker in NFL history

Of course he's gonna miss 3 kicks now on Sunday, but we got a very successful player who isn't that old by kickers standards (34). Josh Brown was very good for us, but Gould has been great for a decade. I have a feeling he's gonna hit a very, very big kick for us at some point this year.

nothing to see here.
Yes.
jcn56 : 10/21/2016 3:55 pm : link
He's been below average, was cut and out of work, and he's no spring chicken either. He's heading to London on minimal notice to kick in a game we can't afford to lose.

Excited is probably the last word I'd use to describe it.
This roster
JonC : 10/21/2016 3:55 pm : link
needs a helluva lot more than an aging kicker.
he's a kicker
giants#1 : 10/21/2016 3:55 pm : link
not named Gostkowski, Bailey or Tucker. Not much to be excited about.
Gould was 7 of 9 from 50 yards out
Mike in Long Beach : 10/21/2016 3:57 pm : link
Just last season. He was cut because of salary cap implications, not performance.
And he set the Bears record for field goals last year
Mike in Long Beach : 10/21/2016 3:57 pm : link
How is that on the decline?
Not excited

But I expect him to contribute and not be a downgrade.
Best of all!

No freakin' rap sheet.
Gould lead the NFL in 50+ yard field goals last year
Mike in Long Beach : 10/21/2016 4:00 pm : link
And was 2nd in the NFL in field goals made last year.
He may be worse overall than Brown at this point
jogo1 : 10/21/2016 4:00 pm : link
but his success over 50+ is noteworthy and may sway them to actually go for more long attempts.
I guess 'excited' is a bit much, but hey click bait! :)
Mike in Long Beach : 10/21/2016 4:02 pm : link
I'm just saying I think he's going to have a big impact on a game at some point this year. As jogo just noted, I think we'll be more inclined to go for a long kick at some point than we were with Brown, and this team hasn't exactly put points up with ease this year.
I'm
AcidTest : 10/21/2016 4:02 pm : link
fine with Gould. He was the best kicker available. Let's see how he does, but I'm glad he's on the team.

Meaningless stat.

Do you remember Ali Haji Sheikh? Kicked a shitload of FGs in 1983 when their drives stalled inside the 20, had an unusual amount of FGs from 20-29 yds. By '85 they were disgusted with him, by '87 he was out of football.

Did you read the next post? Gould led the NFL in 50+ yarders, as well. So the only thing meaningless is your reference to a player who made his money under 30 yards out when I'm talking about a guy hitting a league-leading amount of long kicks in the process.

I admitted excited was a bit much, but your stat still didn't fit in this discussion, IMO. I say that respectfully. Your number implied it the amount of field goals doesn't matter because of an inordinate amount from close range, and that's not the case.
On the field, couldn't get much better than Josh Brown

I agree here. Brown led the NFL in FG% last year from us, so I don't think we're any better.

But I do think Gould will get a chance to kick an important kick from long range that wouldn't have happened with Bronw.

He's still 8 for 10 from <=49 yards and has missed just 2 XPs (in 520 attempts) in his career. I guess for him, that's a "slump". Also has TBs on 53% of his KOs, though that's probably a little low by design as he's given up 16.5 yards/return on his other 15 kicks. (I believe he's had a few intentional coffin corners to pin teams <25).

Disagree. On the field, Brown's middle of the pack at best. I'd take all these guys over him without thinking twice:

Gostkowski
Vinatieri
Justin Tucker
Dan Bailey
Dustin Hopkins
Matt Bryant
Josh Lambo
Mason Crosby
Brandon McManus
Graham Gano
Steven Hauschka

Could argue over some of these:
Mike Nugent
Nick Novak
Matt Prater
Janikowski
Greg Zuerlein
Cairo Santos
Chandler Catanzaro

If he set the team record, it is relevant. has to be alot more than 7 FGs. but whatever, no big deal. Have a good weekend, let's hope they win

the Giants need to come out swinging and make our Kicking situation irrelevant on Sunday. Getting sick of close games every single week, would love this offense to click and hang 30+ on them.

Yup, they need to score TDs. FGs will be extra risky with Gould/Wing having basically no practice together.
If Gould misses any kicks in London

pjcas18 : 10/21/2016 4:46 pm : link
of the thread, but probably, no reason to be excited about anything related to Gould. He was out of work for a reason.

Especially when other being a repulsive wife-beater, Brown was pretty much money from like 53 yards in.
Good Pick Up

Very good pick up oon short notice, big leg.
Kickers can be so up and down who knows what we get
steve in ky : 10/21/2016 5:01 pm : link
We may get a guy with a chip on his shoulder for having been cut and goes out and has a fantastic season trying to prove those people wrong or get am aging kicker who completely flops under the pressure of trying to prove those same people wrong.
It's hilarious
LakeGeorgeGiant : 10/21/2016 5:04 pm : link
that we sign a kicker nearly 4 years younger than Brown and you guys act like he is ancient.

I don't remember a lot of concern about our "aging" kicker when Brown was on the roster, but the younger guy is too old.

Yes, Gould had a down year last year, but the decision to cut him was also influenced by his 2016 salary. We don't really know what we have in Gould, but I don't think his age is all that alarming.

LakeGeorgeGiant
steve in ky : 10/21/2016 5:08 pm : link
I haven't read the entire thread but have people said they were alarmed by his age?

He is aging but plenty of kickers kick far beyond his age so we might strike gold who knows.

Also I thought he was cut largely for missing s few extra points this preseason as much as anything else.
Don't forget
Big Rick in FL : 10/21/2016 5:22 pm : link
Gould kicked in Soldier field. Which is the toughest place to kick according to a lot of NFL kickers. So if he can succeed there I'm sure New York will be no problem.
A quick scan of the thread
LakeGeorgeGiant : 10/21/2016 5:38 pm : link
and I see three references to "aging kicker", so yes, his age has certainly been made an issue in this thread and elsewhere.

I'm not saying he isn't on the back half of his career, but he is replacing a 38 year old.

Net loss for the Giants.

Statistically, Josh Brown has been one of the most impressive place kickers in team history.

I used the term because he is aging but I'm certainly not alarmed by it and while I can't speak for the others I doubt anyone is really alarmed by his age. Simply pointing out that you never really know what your getting with an aging kicker. At some point they begin to lose it and when that is can vary greatly with each kicker.

As I mentioned in my first post I'm hoping for a guy with a chip on his shoulder wanting to prove people wrong and ends up thriving on that but who knows. Whe shall see.
How much of an "upgrade" are you expecting?
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/21/2016 5:53 pm : link
Brown was a very, very good kicker. There was literally nothing that anyone was calling to be changed.

It's not like you're getting a Janikowski in his prime leg talent now.
Brown was >90% kicker for us
adamg : 10/21/2016 5:53 pm : link
So it's a lower quality guy. That said, Gould is very average (85ish%) which is fine. We should be fine with him. He missed 2 in the 30-39 range and another 2 in the 40-49 range last year. He's not an upgrade by any means.

Brown is a top 10 kicker btw. Don't know what the haters are talking about. His talent hasn't been in question.
