Am I the only one excited about Robbie Gould?

Mike in Long Beach : 10/21/2016 3:53 pm
This isn't another Josh Brown debate... just something about our current football team.

Gould is:

- The leading scorer in Bears history (1,118 points)
- The leader for most field goals in one season (33) in Bears history (2015)
- The Bears' leader for most consecutive 50+ yard field goals made (11 straight in 2013)
- The record holder for longest field goal in Bears history (58 yards in 2013)

- The 9th most accurate kicker in NFL history

Of course he's gonna miss 3 kicks now on Sunday, but we got a very successful player who isn't that old by kickers standards (34). Josh Brown was very good for us, but Gould has been great for a decade. I have a feeling he's gonna hit a very, very big kick for us at some point this year.

in a pinch. To get a guy with Gould's pedigree on such short notice is a very good get, IMO.

Exactly
hope you are equally excited about his kickoffs

that's why the Bears let him go.

So it's a lower quality guy. That said, Gould is very average (85ish%) which is fine. We should be fine with him. He missed 2 in the 30-39 range and another 2 in the 40-49 range last year. He's not an upgrade by any means.

Brown is a top 10 kicker btw. Don't know what the haters are talking about. His talent hasn't been in question.

But career Brown is only 83.6. So Gould's an upgrade.

During his time with the Giants, that's 3 full seasons plus the 5 games from this year, Brown has a 91.7% FGP. Gould has never broken 90% in a season. It's not an upgrade in any conceivable way.

Net loss for the Giants.

Statistically, Josh Brown has been one of the most impressive place kickers in team history.

Brown has been exceptional with the Giants for sure. Can't be improved upon.

But as that's good as he's been, the full body of Gould's work gives me much more confidence when a big kick is coming up. So I'm not really comparing who was better last year. I'm saying I think Gould is going to be a plus for us moving forward, in confidence and in practice.
Strictly speaking
RetroJint : 10/22/2016 7:27 am : link
without any consideration for his criminal behavior, Brown has been the best kicker in Giants history. That can be said with mathematical certainty. And although he has kicked for them during a time of unrivalled, league field goal accuracy, it is also true that Brown's career FG % with the Giants is the highest ever for a kicker with one team. Furthermore his kick-off touchback rate has been consistent to league norms.

Gould has costed the Bears several games over the last couple seasons, missing FGAs in the 40s range. Therefore, I am not optimistic about this tradeoff in place kickers. Additionally, because he is rusty, Gould could very well cost the Giants a game tomorrow, a game I expect to be very close.

Don't ever change.
Net Loss for sure..
Bluesbreaker : 10/22/2016 10:18 am : link
but at least he is a known quantity lets hope he
doesn't cost us the game .
Would be nice to win a game going away instead of biting
are fingernails off in the closing seconds .
Brown was the best kicker in Giants history?
widmerseyebrow : 10/22/2016 11:08 am : link
I don't know you can say that with certainty when he never had to make a playoff level pressure kick his entire time here.

It's nice to have a kicker who can boot regular season field goals at a high clip, but history has shown that half of those guys melt down in the playoffs when the stakes are highest.
Robbie Gould
Big Rick in FL : 10/22/2016 11:16 am : link
Wasn't cut because of performance. He was cut because he had a 4.1 million dollar cap hit. They replaced him with Connor Barth whose missed 3 FGs already this year and is a 75% Kicker. Bears fans are rightfully pissed that the team was so cheap. Gould was 85% Kicker last year. While kicking half his games in the hardest stadium to kick.
Gould has been around enough that he should be fine.
Jimmy Googs : 10/22/2016 11:36 am : link
Hopefully he gets a chance to kick something that makes a difference, but its short enough so no problems. That'll give him a nice boost of confidence and welcome him onto team...

Yeah, that kick would have gotten us into the playoffs where we definitely would have moved onto the Superbowl...
Gould is a guy with a strong leg
Vanzetti : 10/22/2016 1:15 pm : link
who is very good from 50+ but has also missed a lot of big kicks from closer in

That said, it is very fortunate that a kicker with his resume was available midseason
Brown, % wise,
Doomster : 10/22/2016 1:17 pm : link
was very good.....but when we really needed him to step up in the Jets game last year, he came up short....

Gould is young, and hungry.....he is playing for next year's contract.....unfortunately, lately Giant's doing that, don't seem to come up big...
See Jimmy

You just don t get it. That kick could have meant a victory over the Jets, and one more week of a game that meant something.

I love watching the Giants and it s more fun when they are still revelant. That kick Lupe have kept them relevant for one more week, so for me it meant something. For fans who would only really care if the team is a Super Bowl contender it wasn't t.

You know, I actually agree with you on the relevancy concept completely. Just taking a cheap shot at your extreme post of "never forgave"...

No worries. I felt he was going to miss that one anyway...it was that kind of year. :-)
